US Men's National Team (7 Viewers)

It is weird because it doesn't sound like Gladbach is coming close to the 10 million euro valuation. But it would probably be an objectively better move for Gio considering he knows the league and the language.
yeah I agree. I saw a number closer to 3-4m (which is probably what his real value is). If I were Dortmund, I would sell him for the ~3.5m and attach a sell on % just in case he finds his form again to protect themselves from getting fleeced.

Lalas doing something so very typically Lalas and slimy on his podcast.

He's answering a question about whether Tim Weah "would have even made it to Europe if he didn't have his father's name." And Lalas did the same type of thing he used to do about dual nationality players. Where he pretends to be magnanimous and supportive while he's really passive aggressively trying to poke at fault lines by suggesting they don't "love the crest" enough. And here, he points out that he's father and "probably thousands" of players have gotten advantages based on who they were related to. Essentially, passive-aggressively calling Weah a nepo-baby while saying it isn't that big a deal.

But he never even tried to consider what leg up that may have been. Weah wasn't really raised by George. Weah's mother was his first soccer coach. George was in Liberian politics by as early as 2005 when Tim was five years old. Tim was playing in the US Soccer youth system as a boy and moved to PSG's academy at 14. He did well enough there to get some first team stuff with PSG when it was one of the best teams in Europe. And then went to Lille and finally to Juve. And he's never been a star in Europe, but he's never seemed to have anything handed to him. And he's unquestionably one of the 15-20 best American soccer players, so yeah, he'd probably have made Europe if his name was Tim Jones.

It's impossible to believe that Lalas would have even entertained the question if Weah hadn't made those comments in the Pulisic documentary.
my guess is that his last name helped him get into the PSG academy. Everything else he was able to do after that was certainly based on his own merit IMO.

I don't think either Pulisic or Gio played for the U21's, but I may be mistaken. I think they both jumped from U19 to the main club. Campbell did play for Dortmund II.
Dortmund don't seem to have much use for their IIs (it's U23s but they can play older players at times). They don't seem to put any of their top prospects there and even if they do, it's rarely for long. I'm not sure if it's because they are in the 4th division or they are in the 4th division because they don't put any of their prospects there. They were relegated last season btw.

Regardless, I doubt Albert ever plays for Dortmund II.

It is amazing what just half a good season can do to your profile

Luca Bombino’s profile is one of the most attractive among young Americans and is being monitored especially in England, between the Premier League and Championship, and in the Netherlands, where AZ Alkmaar had already pursued him in the past. The first team to submit an official offer for him was West Brom, around €2.5M + bonuses. But San Diego's plan is clear: with the team battling for the title, only a very high offer could convince the them to let him go now. The club, which has a philosophy of developing young players and then selling them on, does not want to deprive him of this opportunity, and his transfer to Europe could come in 2026. Before that, there will be the next u-20 World Cup, where he will play in September and October with the United States, another opportunity to further increase his value.
Bombino has really been good this season. He hasn't impressed me on the youth teams but he seems to have taken a huge leap forward. He's obviously behind Miller in the left back prospect list but he looks to be on the verge of the next best. He's playing his way into Camp Cupcake this year.

I expect we should see Freeman move this winter at the latest. His steady play and quality at the club level continues to grow

This was in the League Cup quarter finals last night (MLS won all 4 games, although two went to PK’s)

=============

Alex Freeman vs Toluca
90 minutes
66 touches
35/40 passes
1/2 long balls
5/5 dribbles (!)
2/2 tackles
10/12 ground duels
2/3 aerials
3x fouled
0 fouls
3 clearances
3 blocks
- kid is going places. Improving every week

Love to see that stat line. Very impressive outing. If he really can take on opponents with the ball at his feet, get fouled and not give up fouls, that's pretty stellar. He'll be ready to make the leap to another league soon enough. Then he'll get to try and defend against higher caliber wingers and wing backs.

Two stats jump out at me. The ground duels and the dribbles.

I don ‘t know if he was just nervous during the Gold Cup and did not want to screw up or if Poch instructed him to not dribble but he attempted almost no dribbles the entire tournament. To be an effective full back these days you have to be able to beat an opponent 1 on 1. This is what makes Dest pop game after game. If Freeman adds dribbling consistently with being able to win ground duals with out fouling, big league teams are going to love it, especially at his age.

The interesting thing about Reyna to Gladbach is the Scally connection. Scally has been Reyna's good friend since they were young kids in the NY academy and maybe Scally can help Gio settle in faster if the move goes through.

Or they will feed on each other and both will continue to be petulant non-entities for the USMNT.

nothing new, re Musah, but here's the latest I could find:

Milan’s starting valuation is around €30m, while Atalanta could aim to close for around €25m. In short, the gap is so small that it’s reasonable to expect the deal to close positively within the next 24-48 hours.

Given that we’ve entered the final ten days of the summer transfer window, time is running out. This is also because Musah has already made it clear he’s happy with the destination, as knows he’ll have more playing time in Bergamo than in Milan.

Massimiliano Allegri is still a factor though: the Milan coach still considers Musah a valuable asset due to his flexibility and a great example for the team due to his hard work and dedication. These are qualities which also led to La Dea wanting him.

His versatility allows him to play both in the two-man midfield and on the right flank in a 3-4-2-1. However, his potential acquisition would be primarily intended to add physicality and pace to central areas. The American would be a regular rotation partner with Ederson and Marten de Roon.

in what way has Scally been petulant?
yeah, that one flew over my head.

As far as I know, Scally has been a pro in how he goes about his business. Almost the exact opposite of Gio. I wonder if Z is thinking of some one else, unless I missed something about Scally over the years.

Man I would have lost a lot of money if some one, even just 3 weeks ago, bet me that this would happen.

OFFICIAL: The Colorado Rapids has signed Paxten Aaronson from Eintracht Frankfurt to a five-year contract through 2030. Paxten joins Colorado in a club-record transfer and will occupy a Designated Player slot on the Rapids’ roster.

if they can get 25m for him, that seems more than fair. Musah still has some upside but far from what we hoped it would be when he first came to Milan.

It seemed like the gist of that was theyre offering around 25, and with Milan wanting 30, theyre close enough apart to likely reach an agreement. I dont know that Nottingham or Napoli got past interest into actual numbers. But for that matter, im not sure that 25 is an actual number or just speculation.

As far as im concerned, if he draws 20 that's a good deal for everybody. But milan is rating his so-called versatility apparently in the 10m range.

I think it's the assumption that he did something to piss Poch off so as not to call him into the Gold Cup squad. And I really do think it was the playing golf thing, but it's hard for me to fault Scally or GIo for that because I always used to see **** like that during Gregg's camps. It would be covered by the social media team. I'm pretty sure THIS round was covered by the social media team. So, I'm not sure the guys could have had any idea that going for a round of golf during their off time in the camp would piss Poch off.

Presumably, now they know. If you're in camp, do team sponsored ****. Fine. It's not an unfair expectation. But I just have a hard time with penalizing guys when I don't know if that was communicated to them.

If anybodys watched CPs doc series...he plays a lot of golf. Played against Deuce- so not like this is some new scourge for the usmnt.

Did Gareth Bale ever play for Poch? :oldunsure:

<sigh>. Juventus took away Weston’s number and gave him Weah’s old 22. Every ****ing year.

Maybe he should not have joked about putting ranch dressing on pizza :wall:
Ok turns out this was a nothing burger. Juventus had nothing to do with this.

Michele Di Gregorio approached Weston and said that his late father loved the number 16 and Weston immediately gave him his number and then switched to 22.

Borussia Mönchengladbach have matched Parma proposal for Gio Reyna.

Decision up to the player with Gladbach now confident to win the race.
Isn't the race to some higher number than what Parma had offered to get BwB to sell?
BVB are running out of time. If they don’t accept something, they risk what little value he has left dropping to almost nothing if they sit him again all season.

I hope this gets done today.

[Rik Elfrink] At PSV, Pepi will train with the team today. Bosz says that tomorrow it will be decided whether he will be part of the squad against FC Groningen. He will definitely not start

Borussia Mönchengladbach win race over Parma to sign Gio Reyna from Borussia Dortmund.

Agreement in place with Reyna and his agency Roof to get the green light for medical.
I know he's the guy... But players terms aside, are we sure bvb is good with sale price?
usually a medical is not used unless everything is in place so it appears to be a good sign but with Gio I guess we just need to wait it out

I was bored today and I was missing World Cup Qualifying so I have been watching highlights of the 2022 cycle.

Here is a fascinating tidbit: Konrad De La Fuente started in the first game of that cycle.

It's amazing when you go back and watch old games how many guys are completely forgettable. I mean the US has been a decent side for a long time now, but even in big games we've had some borderline guys get minutes.

ETA: and in case you're wondering whatever happened to that guy...
  • Olympiacos (2022–2023): Loaned in August 2022, but limited to 3 league appearances
  • Eibar (2023–2024): Played in Spain's Segunda División on loan, recording 3 goals in 19 league appearances
  • Lausanne‑Sport (2024–Present): Joined the Swiss side in July 2024 on a three-year deal. As of mid‑2025, he has made 24 league appearances.

I hope this isn't true. And I hope the mods don't jump on me about this. But seeing Trump get so involved in all this FIFA stuff in the lead-up to the World Cup is giving me serious Argentina 1978 vibes.
