Vegas just isn’t fun anymore…. (2 Viewers)

I am going to Phish at the Sphere next week. Really looking forward to the trip. Probably way less gambling than normal for me, but the cards have been unreal bad for me lately, so that should be good. I will say I have had less fun my last few trips. I like to gamble and don't mind losing really as it should come back around, but losing like I have been just gets boring.

@Drunken Cowboy

Hey there. I this a maybe. We have a bit going on due to daughter graduating and us moving her out to ASU. While I have a decent amount of PTO, I don’t want to request too much too close together.

The group has also discussed going to New Orleans for it.

It is also close to our anniversary, so not sure how everything will settle.

Just found out I’ll be climbing in Vegas next month. Looking forward to not gambling, not wading through crowds, nor “people watching” a plastic culture predicated on exploiting depravity.

Eager to enjoy more natural scenery while struggling physically and mentally, and be rewarded with a nice meal at the end of the day.

Good luck finding any 3:2 tables on blackjack now. I was invited not to play anymore back in Dec 2005, but I could squeeze in a few hands without drawing too much heat if I didn't sit for too long in one spot after that for quite a number of years. Now, you just can't find those tables very often. If you do, it's typically $100 minimums and of course being watched like a hawk, constantly asked about players card and ID, etc.

Yeah, those 6-5 tables are infuriating. Are you a known counter? I always keep a rough count in my head and vary my bets but never enough to get called off. These videos are pretty interesting of what a counter and his team deal with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsxQzewm0zA
Yeah, I suppose so. It was back almost 20 years ago now but I don't think that mark ever goes away. I'm not as sharp at it now as I used to be. My mind doing math while taking in other conversations at nearing 50 isn't as sharp, especially over prolonged periods, as it was at 25

What does this mean? I’m not a gambler, so I don’t even know what 3:2 means, but understand the game of blackjack.

Are you saying you did so well, they asked you to stop playing?
It was inferred I was counting cards, although never directly accused. We both knew what was up when the guy approached me from behind flanked with security guards and stood me up out of my chair from the table. I was told I was welcome to play any other game at the casino, just no longer 21.

Headed there in two weeks with another guy from work for three nights. Staying at the Rio, have a couple rounds of golf lined up in the mornings.

Need to find suitable evening activities as I think our work commitments end around 8pm.

The vibe of the casinos has definitely changed. It now just feels like everything has been ruthlessly optimized to separate you from your money as efficiently as possible. There's no fun to it, no play, just like a ticking clock you have to feed money into. And everything else is priced as if you have to hit the jackpot to participate in the experience. Not really feeling it anymore.

We went to Vegas with our young kids almost every year as we had family out there. I think our daughters have been 10 times. We stopped going once the effort to move away from families started and then Covid definitely put the end to everything. We did go four years ago and when we landed, I got the notification I had been around someone who was exposed. I did my best to mask up and tough it out, but I was a walking corpse out there for the entire trip. We went again two years ago with with our now adult daughters, and it was fun, but my wife and I are 55 and not spring chickens The running up and down the strip just killed us.

My wife and I didn't do anything for our 25th or our 30th as life just has a way of adjusting your priorities, but we have vowed to go this summer--just the two of us. This will be the first vacation in 25 years without kids--I mean ever!! We have stayed at most of the properties out there, but my plan is to either go to Wynn (we love that place) or Resorts World and STAY there. I mean, this is going to be a different type of trip. No running, Just stay put, great food, gamble and relax.

We have never stayed at the Cosmo, but compared to the Wynn, Resorts World,, what do people recommend?

Just got back from the Cosmo. The location is key for this one, as are the restaurants inside the hotel. The hotel has a sexy upscale vibe.

Get a balcony room overlooking the Bellagio Fountains. We sprung for it and don't regret it.

If you are looking forward to the pools though, I'd look elsewhere unless you are going to try to go to their adults only pool club. I don't have any input on that since we had our 15 year old with us.

I have an old friend who said that the mark of a Vegas pro was one who didn't leave the resort for the weekend, he would call you a 🫅

I really dunno Resorts World, but if you like the Wynn, I doubt you would like RW better.

The Cosmo is fun, but it is a lot smaller than Wynn. More of a party scene. And check the price. For younger party peeps, Cosmo is still the spot, so you will pay probably more for the Cosmo than anywhere else on the strip, because there are people that HAVE to stay there. It's not a huge amount of money, but you ARE paying more for a smaller hotel/casino/pool. You paying for young person party status. Although......if you aren't too worried about the room being $300 vs $400, you should at least take a look-see at the Terrace Studios at Cosmo.

Like this guy just posted over here. Outdoor hotel room space is rare. I loved it.

If you are looking for an alternative to the Wynn, just for the fun of it, my first look in Vegas is Aria. It's bigger, has a better pool, and you CAN walk to Cosmo.

Wynn/Aria/Cosmo all better restaurants than RW

I am moving to PHX in a couple of weeks. Vegas is 5 hours away. But I am not sure how often I would go. Way too expensive, Climate is no different than PHX. Much of the outdoors stuff can be done in PHX. Why go to Vegas to play poker when I have 3 casinos with big poker rooms within 40 minutes of my apartment? From what I hear, the Vegas poker can be really tight/tough and it's hard to win a lot of money. Sure, the clubs, shows and restaurants are top notch, and that's why you go there. Gambling there is just a joke. Minimums are just way too high. Next time I go, it will be only for shows, sports, great food.....probably won't gamble.

It's too bad, since I have been to LV 15 times and love it.

Rather drive 5 hours to San Diego, be by the ocean and hang out there.

Next time I go, it will be only for shows, sports, great food

This is why. And you can catch a Southwest flight for about as much as you would spend in gas, anyway. 45 minutes in the air. I think you’re right about everything you wrote, though.

Welcome (almost) to Phoenix!

You're a bit off strip, but there are still plenty of things to do near-ish you. Curious how your time at Rio will go... I know they've done a lot of renovations, and I've read reviews that have been quite positive and others that were pretty meh.

Penn and Teller play at the Rio and their shows start at 9pm. If you haven't seen them, it's worth it especially since these two Vegas icons won't be around much longer.

Head over to Venetian and go to Flight Club. It's darts, but it's so much more fun than normal darts. The facility looks amazing, the drinks and food are superb, and playing darts is an absolute blast they way they have it set up. Went there with a friend last trip and can't imagine not going there every trip moving forward. Good views of the Sphere in that area as well. And I believe the late show at the Sphere starts at 9:30pm. It's definitely worth it... unlike anything anywhere.

There are a million other things... despite what this thread would have you believe, Vegas is still amazing. Have fun!

Going there for work next week and looking forward to perusing this plastic culture predicated on exploiting depravity.

I've stayed at Resorts World recently. While you are in the Casino/hotel, it is just as good as any of the other nicer casinos there. However, when you step outside, you are next to a deserted strip of land, Circus Circus and one of those ####ty strip malls. It's a short walk to the Wynn or Fountainebleu and it never felt dangerous, but the resort doesn't feel part of the Strip vibe - no one is walking by there.

Stayed at Resorts World a couple of years ago and hated it. I'll never stay there again.

Can someone point me to the "main Vegas" thread? What is the title? I can't seem to find a thread with more than a few replies that aren't about the shooting or boxing. I am heading there next week and wanted to dig through the thread a little. TIA

Just got back from a little over a week in Vegas. Had a blast, climbing in Red Rock Canyon nearly the whole time, excluding a day trip to another cliff in Northern Arizona.

Food was more expensive, but not prohibitively so. Lotus of Siam still really good. Was disappointed in Best Friend, which I tried for the first time, after seeing it mentioned numerous times in the other thread.

Didn't get involved with anything on the strip, but driving through, it looked as gross as I remembered. Also, northbound traffic coming back from AZ Saturday was horrendous, bumper to bumper for miles. I believe it was for EDC. Glad we were going the opposite direction.

At least from my vantage point, Vegas is just as much fun as ever. And it has nothing to do with the cliche debauchery which must "stay" in Vegas. That said, few places (none?) offer such amazing outdoor recreation in close proximity to a major city. So it remains one of my favorite vacation destinations.

I go to Las Vegas for a conference every August, but for the last couple of years, I make sure to get in a day early to head to the Mount Charleston Area to get some elevation, cooler temperatures and a decent hike. That reminds me, I need to find something for this year.

I didn’t go to Charleston, but believe many of the roads/trails are shut down, to repair damage from heavy rain last year.

Thanks. I'll double-check with AllTrails before I go.

I'd easily take Vancouver and Denver over Vegas but then again I've only been to Vegas in the summer. I couldn't imagine doing any outdoor activities in that heat.

Yeah, Vegas is rough from late April until late Sept, but it's like 25 miles to world class climbing. Vancouver and Denver are pretty close as well, but probably another 15-30 miles, and much worse traffic to comparable stuff.

Salt Lake is probably the best comparison.

I'll be back in the States for something like 8 weeks this fall and I'm thinking about doing a cheapo midweek trip to Vegas ans staying downtown. Anyone stayed at The D or Four Queens?

I think the D has free parking...check it out....Circa bends you over for $ 30 a day if I remember right

increased chance of running in to @Nigel Tufnel would be worth any expense

So a little back history….. Being born and raised in Southern California I’ve spent countless hours in Vegas, going all the way back to when I was a little kid and my parents would come here and gamble while I played in the arcades (the 80’s were a very different parenting time! lol).

I haven’t been for a while just due to general life busyness, but I’m out here right now attending a conference for work. It’s only been maybe four years since I was last here but man has it changed.

1. Way dirtier. Walking down the strip is disgusting and feels borderline unsafe. Never felt that way before to me.
2. There’s no more cheap gambling. Table minimums everywhere are super high. I couldn’t find a pai gow table with under a $25 minimum, and it’s a Wednesday early afternoon. Wtf. Not long ago 10$ was common.
3. Everything is incredibly expensive now too. I bought a 16 ounce bottle of Coke, was 7.99! The club sandwich at the little sports bar was $28.

I was looking forward to this conference as I hadn’t been here for a while and use to love it. But either I’ve aged 25 years in the last 4/5 years, or Vegas just isn’t fun anymore. Either way it sucks.

Was there in July. Mandalay Bay pool bar one can of Bud Light and a Margarita 36.00. 16oz Gatorade 10 dollars. Breakfast at anyplace was 20-25 dollars for the basics couple eggs sausage and toast, nothing special. Every table even if empty in the morning was 25.00 minimum.

The strip is much dirtier. I went for a walk down the strip at 6am because I am on EST and was up early. After a mile my wife said we need to turn back as she felt very unsafe, there were a bunch of people still out from the night before milling around, not your regular vacationer's. Every 10 yards or so we had to step over people sleeping right on the sidewalk. This was right in front of MGM and whatever hotel. I am talking 20-25 people or more in the mile we walked.

I did enjoy Freemont Street on a Saturday night. People watchers' paradise. They did have 5-10 dollars table at The D.

We then went to visit some friends in Summerlin for a couple days and stayed at the Marriot-Ramparts Casino out near Red Rock. It was beautiful in Summerlin. Clean, golf courses, felt super safe. Prices were half of that on the strip at all the bars and eateries. It is only a 20 minute drive away. So I we ever go back I would stay there again and just drive in for a show or whatever.

Yep, Summerlin is where I live. Very clean and safe. You can stay at the Red Rock Casino to get the strip experience and the brand new Durango Casino is about an 8 minute Uber away. Both have great restaurants and casinos.

I'm going this weekend! My first trip in like 5 years. (I used to go like 5 times a year) Going to the Raiders/49ers preseason game on Friday. Can't wait to check out the stadium. I'm a 49ers fan, my girlfriend is a Raider fan and is dressing as a Raiderette. Hahaha I've been teaching her Poker... she want's to play, lets see how much money she loses this weekend.

I just went to vegas about a month ago and spent a couple nights at the Four Queens. I’ve also stayed at the “D” within the past year—and I would personaly stay at the Four Queens over the D. The room was much bigger, no resort fees, very similar locations on Fremont Street, both resorts offer free parking to hotel guests. I will say that the casino in the D feels newer and has a little more energy, but there is no reason why you couldn’t enjoy the bigger rooms in the four queens and just walk over to the D.

Edit: just for fun—the standard room at the D has 290-291 square feet.
The standard room at the Four Queens is 320+ square feet.

Being that you are thinking midweek—one thing that I have to say that was awesome—was that I took my mom (who is 83) on my last trip. While she’s not in a wheelchair—she likes having the stability bars in the shower/bathroom—so I requested an accessible room for her. Her bathroom and room in general was HUGE. The standard accessible rooms at the Four Queens are like 380+ square feet.

Just got back Monday. We used to go every year or every other year for about 10 years. And this is my first trip back in about 10 years.

My experience will be slightly different because my wifes company puts us up in the Wynn for 4 nights.

I do agree the Strip is more crowded and feels sketchier than it did in the past. Even at 10pm.
Also 100% agree tables are way higher than the old days. I managed to find some $5 3 card poker - and Mississipi stud at the Horseshoe. But black jack - roulette all high. Craps high. Pai Gow high.

I expected the Wynn to be always higher but not on a random Tuesday morning. We are older now and don't gamble a **** load but still play some hours over the trip. My wife enjoys shows and and dining now.

Even then that was expensive. As mentioned a basic breakfast cost me $25. I hit up Starbucks a couple times just cause it was cheaper.

All that being said I still enjoyed it but it definitely is not the same, i'm also married and older now lol. Our last day we actually sat at one of those roulette digital tables that were $3 minimums but have an actual wheel.

We actually had fun sitting there for a couple hours. Killing time. Actually only place I ended up money lol

Derek is great, but he also owns the Golden Gate. The casino at the Golden Gate is cool, but the rooms are pretty horrid. As cool as Derek Stevens is, I think that if I were to stay at a hotel in downtown strictly based on the quality of the ownership/management, there would be a very strong case for The Plaza. Jonathan Jossel is one of the youngest hotel CEO’s in Vegas and he’s done some pretty wonderful things at the Plaza. If you aren’t familiar with him—I’d watch this video that highlights a day in his life at work.

I like the D better, personally. Just make sure you get a room that doesn’t face Fremont Street as the live music plays until like 3 am sometimes.

Love the Wynn, such a relaxing atmosphere. Noticed the same thing about the tables, it really sucks. The difference between a $5 table and a $15 table for those goofy table games like Ultimate HE is so huge because there’s like 5 bets you make. Have had luck finding cheap tables at Golden Nugget and Cromwell….

I will say the sphere is freaking amazing and we are definitely now going to be looking for concerts to try and attend in the future even if the cost is steep. I really wish I knew what it was about and I would have tried to hit up u2

Jossel is awesome, and "On the corner of Main Street" is a fun podcast, but there's no way Plaza's rooms are on par with The D. He's done some great things with the place (mostly around bingo though), but the rooms have not been substantially renovated in a long time.

If I'm staying downtown, it's Circa by a heavy margin, then Golden Nugget, then The D.
