victor cruz? (1 Viewer)

Avery - what did you say about no-name longshots like QB's Warner and Romo, RB's like Willie Parker, no name WR's like Colston and Austin?undrafted, small school guys making big plays all the time in practice and preseason games can absolutely flow over onto the big stage - you're downplaying what Cruz has done, arent you?
Yeah. I am downplaying his pre-season success a bit, and for good reason. The stories like Warner, Romo, Parker, Austin and Colston are good ones but that anecdotal evidence is by far the exception for these "out of nowhere", long shots.Even looking the guys you mentioned you see that these guys don't just leapfrog the established players and are usually not really out of nowhere. Warner needed an injury to Trent Green (who was looking great when he went down). Tony Romo was holding a clipboard for three and a half years before he got his shot. Parker backed up for a year and needed knee injuries to Bettis and Staley to get the starting gig. Austin was no better than WR3 for his first three plus years in the league. Colston? Well there's one that "came of of nowhere" but Devery Henderson, Terrance Cooper are Jamal Jones weren't exactly Nicks, Steve Smith and Mario Manningham.Again, it's a great story but the reality of the situation in 2010 is he deep down on the depth chart and I would not be surprised if he wasn't active on game day. Dynasty? Sure. Take a shot. This year? No way, barring injuries, is he vying for the WR3 role.

Dynasty league stash guy... Maybe next year, but some things would really have to change in order for Cruz to get enough catches to be worth playing... This team is absolutely stacked at the WR position. Someone would have to be injured or traded for Cruz to see time.. Maybe Cruz gets traded..? Who knows.. You'll have to be willing to invest a roster spot for a couple years but this kid certainly looks the part.
I have just not understood how the Giants have not moved one of these guys yet. With Smith, Nicks, Manningham, Barden, Moss and Cruz (plus they had a guy I was watching on a replay on NFL network today...maybe Vaughn...he looked good too...guy with dreds), they are stacked beyond belief, but have some holes on their roster. Camarillo can be a nice target for Favre, but I am extremely curious as to why they either did not get involved in a trade or if so, why it did not happen (personally, I would take manningham or barden over camarillo). Thing is, no one will pay for Barden or Cruz...they are going to want one of the top three. Manningham, then, will be the most likely to be moved IMO.
Man that's a lot of depth. A savvy owner in our dyno just stashed Cruz yesterday so i won't get him, just don't have the room anyway. But I have a question for Giants homers. If you had all this talent in the wings, what positions would you trade for to make the most of it? Assuming you're going to keep the top 4 wideouts as that would seem to be enough.Might be a good place to start so we can forecast Cruz's eventual timeline.

Off the cuff, theoretically the Giants could use some help at CB (with Ross gimpy), LB and the OL.The fact is that behind Nicks, Smith and Manningham the Giants have a lot of potential and nothing proven at all to get anything worthy back in return or to make the Giants feel safe enough to trade one of the top three away.Funny. This time last year everybody was saying that the Giants had jack #### at WR.

Great posts Avery. It's hard to say that the Giants would trade away Cruz. Right now he wouldn't garner much in trade and his salary can't be very high, so the biggest gain is to keep him. Also, the GM seems to be trying to get starter quality players for the teams depth, he's done that with the Dline, CB, Safeties, and OL if Andrews eventually starts. The team is having trouble with minor injuries to CB and OL, they might be ready week 1 or could miss a few games. Since they aren't major injuries I don't see them trading for a fill in player, by the time the player got up to speed on the system, the Giants starter would be healthy. The only way I see Cruz getting off the roster is injury or doesn't continue to improve.

Well folks he made the roster ...Where do you guys think he stands on the depth chart? I am thinking hes pushing manningham for the 3rd spot right now.
You're thinking wrong.Cruz and Calhoun made the final roster in a large part due to their special teams play. Cruz was a pleasant camp surprise but you're getting way ahead of yourself here. If Barden doesn't get healthy, Cruz might move up to #4 on the depth chart.
Cruz has already shown way more potential than Barden has ever shown. They gotta get that kid out there and at least see what he can do this year... I see a rotation of those three guys until one of them emerges which, I think cruz will do...
No. Not really.Barden looked very good in camp last year, just as Cruz did this year, plus he has tremendous size which brings another element to the game. Barden came out a small school and everybody knew he would be a project. Look, I like Cruz and he was a very pleasant surprise in camp but just because he looks good in practice and against 3rd and 4th string CBs doesn't mean that "they gotta get that kid out there."

Long term? I can see him having at shot at the WR3 gig for, assuming there is a cap again in the future, I don't think the Giants will be able to afford to keep Manningham around as a WR3. Having said that, you're getting way ahead of yourself. Smith, Nicks and Manningham are entrenched as WR1-3. Reynaud (who Coughlin just said will not split time at RB and will only work with the WRs) will be playing because of his PR/KR skills. Therefore the only thing Cruz is competing for right now is with Calhoun and perhaps Barden to be active on game day.

Some info from Ralph Vacchiano, Giants beat writer:

--(Mario) Manningham reported his concussion late Sunday night. #NYG didn't think he was serious, but he was still showing effects earlier today.

--Manningham will not practice today and will be reevaluated, Coughlin said. Victor Cruz will be the No. 3 in his place.

:lmao:

Great chance for Cruz.

The Giants are loaded at WR and it's meh for FF to even grab Cruz and wait N see. Who sits if he does well? Nicks? Smith? Mario? And if he earned the right to be active on gamedays then how well can he really do as the 4th WR? Will you start him?

As a 4th WR it's next to impossible to have value in FF except in dynasty. BIG Ramses that can also leap has value in TD dreams of tossing lobs I guess but the opportunity is really lacking here.

I think both Barden and Cruz will do well after some roster moves, each seem like locks. I'm 'certain' Jordy Nelson and James Jones will someday too. These two are less experienced and not at their level yet but I think Jones and Nelson offer a good comparison here. Do you roster those two for anything other than waiting for opportunity?

All four could go to many teams and play (not nec start) signifcant minutes but now...I think us dynasty owners are just stuck waiting.

Barden has Moss and Calvin like measurables that instantly make ya think who can cover him? Unlike those two, he doesn't have 'it' yet and is a project still. That's the thing with Barden though. He doesn't seem like a star and he should be, he has to be.

The other three when given a chance, they make an impact that catches your eye right away and the results make you pay attention. With Barden it's still where it all started-he's big, he's got soft hands he's...no results. I got rid of Barden when I could for dynasty, I had to have some results.

Well that's my thinking sorry for the ramble

This is what Cruz needs to get on the field. If he gets there it's then up to him to stave off a Manningham return. This team has WR talent.

Giants place WR Victor Cruz on injured reserve http://bit.ly/bYXFTz

Cruz, who was a preseason sensation with the Giants, strained his hamstring Monday while running sprints. He said Friday he'll "definitely be back in there with the guys" next week, but that won’t be the case now that he's on injured reserve.

The Giants did not give Cruz a "minor" designation, which would have indicated he'd be waived when healthy. That means the team plans on keeping Cruz on IR all season.

Giants wideout Victor Cruz unfortunately can't help battered receiving corps from injured reserve

Thursday, December 16th 2010, 4:00 AM

Victor Cruz feels as good as he has in two months - good enough, even, to help the Giants' battered receiving corps.

If only the rookie sensation from Paterson, N.J., wasn't stuck on season-ending injured reserve.

He has been there since Oct. 16, five days after he suffered what he now says was a "slight tear" of his hamstring during a conditioning drill. At the time, the undrafted rookie out of UMass thought he could have been back in a week, but the Giants' doctors disagreed. And then the Giants ended up needing his roster spot to sign emergency kicker Shayne Graham.

The decision was costly for Cruz. The Giants lost Steve Smith for the season with a knee injury, Hakeem Nicks missed two games and Ramses Barden was also placed on injured reserve. Receivers Derek Hagan and Michael Clayton were signed.

"Every day I wake up and I'm like 'Oh gosh, I wish I was out there,'" Cruz said.

Cruz became a fan favorite when he blistered the Jets in a preseason game for six catches, 145 yards and three touchdowns. But he said he understood the Giants' controversial decision to put him on IR - a move that even caught the attention of the NFL, which ordered Cruz to get examined by an independent doctor.

"As an athlete you're always going to be like, 'It's only going to be a week and I'll be back,'" Cruz said. "But I guess they saw it differently. I'm just following orders."

Here's a nice stash for next year. Steve Smith is going to be done with his rookie contract.

I think Smith gets another contract. Cruz will be in the mix for the #4 spot competing with Hixon, and Barden. Clayton and Thomas are longshots to rejuvenate their careers.

I don't see how he gets time in NY and he's a local boy that will probably stay as long as he can hoping for that chance.

I'd be shocked if the Giants don't throw a bunch of money at Smith.

What their WR coach has done with their young WRs is incredible in today's game. Their might be arrogance that they can just replace any WR at will with a new young wideout they draft, but I doubt that happens.

Given the injuries to their WR's I can't help but feel that Cruz would've had an opportunity to shine this year. Hagan is just bad. You can get a receiver of his caliber off the waiver wire. Barden can't stay healthy long enough to even provide an opinion. Giants got so beat up they had to sign Michael Clayton ... and actually throw it to him! Too bad Cruz got shelved. Hopefully he makes it through the offseason and back into camp.

Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride singled out Victor Cruz when asked about the third receiver job Monday.

Gilbride also called Steve Smith one of the best inside receivers in football, but he remains unsigned and unlikely to play in September. After a dominant exhibition performance, Cruz had moved ahead of Ramses Barden on the depth chart by last September. Still an intriguing Dynasty stash, Cruz is a good bet to hold off Barden and rookie Jerrel Jernigan to enter the season.

what are giants homers thoughts on the chances they resign steve smith? and if they dont , what do we think of the chances of Cruz making any type of fantasy impact this year?

two straight weeks I have him on my bench. No more. He's carving out a nice piece of the offense for himself, and doing it with flair with those Zumba dances in the end zone. He's now a must start, Manningwho?

He was doing nada before the ball ping-ponged to him on his way to the end zone. He has some speed, that's for sure....but he isnt ready for the starting lineup week-in/week-out IMO.

He makes sensational plays every week...ever since game 3 or 4 of last year's preseason. It doesn't appear this happens by accident.

Ok...but if there was one Giant pass-catcher whom the offense game-planned for and focused purposeful attention on it was Ballard. Ballard will have the snap% and consistent targets that would appear to be more attractive than Cruz. Of course if Cruz continues to bounce balls off his helmet for long-scores then I'll be regretting not focusing on him.

had 7 other catches, and more catches then anyone else on the team, outside of the TD rec..Not sure what you're watching...

I was referring to when the Giants werent in comeback mode; base offense. I also couldnt help but notice that his Cruz's fumble cost the Giants the game. If the Giants win 2/3 of their games going fwd, what do you project Cruz's snap % to be? And, given that %, who do yo start him over?

Cruz is a solid player, coaches know that now, Manningham will be phased to WR3 on team soon
did you watch the presser? the coaches werent too pleased with gl turnovers and the players who committed them. He has just as much chance to be in line for a promotion as he has to be in the doghouse.

From Rotoworld:

Victor Cruz caught eight passes for 161 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks.

Cruz won't be denied. Even though Mario Manningham started and was the primary receiver opposite Hakeem Nicks, Cruz dominated the slot. His touchdown was a wild circus catch during which Eli Manning threw a jump ball into double-coverage and Cruz somehow came down with the tipped ball using one hand. It's the kind of play we've seen Cruz make repeatedly. Even if the Giants stick with Manningham outside, Cruz is clearly playing better right now. He led the Giants with 11 targets and is turning into a viable WR3 option during the bye weeks. Oct 9 - 5:20 PM

Cruz has wicked lateral speed. He almost doesn't look that good or that talented but good luck catching him when he goes across the field.

Given Cruz's proclivity for disastrous plays that cost the Giants the win today and great plays using his speed and sometimes other players' toes and helmets, would you start Cruz over someone like Garcon? I would not.

See I don't think the Giants do this..what roto said or is alluding to. They're set if they get Mario back up to speed. He's been hurt. They have a top level slot WR and top level WR at the "#1" spot. A healthy Mario is just fine at the "#2" spot. It's going to get cold in NY soon and their lack of a TE bugs me for cold weather games. Sometimes ya need that tough burly guy over the middle and the Gmen have always had a decent TE. Anyway, they have something in Cruz, there's no need to remove someone from the mix.

Not really. I think Eli hit Ballard twice on the opening drive and that was it. Maybe a Beckum drop.
yes, really; for big gainers. Then the Fox crew pointed out their conversations with Coughlin and that Ballard being featured was an important part of the gameplan b/c he has developed faster than they anticipated over the past month. The next moment I looked up and he was dragging people into the endzone for my opponent. After that, they were behind most of the way...they started going 3 wide and the target distribution changed.

Yup, Ballard was 2nd leading pass catcher including downnfield plays. Thanks for the assist.-

Would you start him next week over somebody like Garcon or not?

How is that even a choice anyone would make? The Cruz and Tebow hype trains are a little out of control. At least Tebow will be in on most snaps.

the crickets on these questions from the hypesters sort of say it all. I like Cruz, but he wont be starting for anyone, including the Giants, until someone gets hurt (or perhaps a bye).

The next moment I looked up and he was dragging people into the endzone for my opponent. After that, they were behind most of the way...they started going 3 wide and the target distribution changed.

Yup, Ballard was 2nd leading pass catcher including downnfield plays. Thanks for the assist.-
Is he your relative or former college buddy?
I notice no disputing of the facts. sort of name calling is all you have? ok, only helps the point.now, back to cruz.
I gave you an "out"I posted the play by play which shows you facts

Please link me to the name calling
you linked to him being the 2nd highest pass-catcher today and the passes being front-loaded exactly as I had asserted. You proved my point. Thanks again.

Talent is *super-awesome*; is he going to play on the majority of their snaps going fwd or not?

Did he please or dis-please the coaching staff today? He got mixed reviews at best.

Would you start him next week over somebody like Garcon or not?

the crickets on these questions from the hypesters sort of say it all. I like Cruz, but he wont be starting for anyone, including the Giants, until someone gets hurt (or perhaps a bye).
Ok so you quoted yourself. He plays in the slot and only starts depending on the first snap alignment. I get point for 161 yards receiving and 1 TD in FF, not for starts. That sounds pretty boring. How do you break a tie?

I've started him the last two weeks because of desperation, injuries, and now byes. Worked pretty well for me.

yes, because the hypesters refuse to face the complete set of facts on Cruz. Right now, Cruz is not very happy with himself and the coaching staff/writers have mixed emotions (http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/10/dalessandro_big_plays_--_both.html).I accept all the good stuff and think it's just swell, but Im not going to ignore that Cruz likes to make horrific plays that cost his team, isnt projected to have a high snap% except when the Giants are incomeback mode, wouldnt start over people like marginal starters like Garcon, etc. There is good and bad here. That's it.

No.Hi, are you new here?

I gotta run soon and take a break from this fun banter, but before I do..

I mentioned the Giants TEs not getting enough work or somesuch.

You called them a featured part of the offense today. (They weren't. 5 of 49 passes is not featured)

I posted the play by play rather than call you out

You quantified it as "for downfield plays" which is comically wrong too.

Also in the beginning you stated that they stopped using the TE once they were behind. That's not true either. Ballard had two catches and a score on their opening drive.

Thanks for this, I haven't been fishing in a while
