Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (12 Viewers)

Need some help with my gaming PC. I know this box is on it's last legs, bought almost 5 years ago, and pretty impressed it's still going strong. I'm trying to hold out on getting a new PC until I'm ready to buy Witcher 3 as the video card (Radeon HD 4870) still seems to run games pretty well at high resolution. However, recently I'm having a problem on games when I go to high resolution my PC power cycles. On games like ME3 I had to drop the resolution down to 1280x720 to not have power shut off. I went to some old stuff like ME2 where I know I used to play in 1920x1080 and the same thing happens, so it's not the new game graphics, but I think it's likely my power supply going bad.

So basically I'm looking for a quality cheap power supply replacement so I can try and keep this thing going a little while longer. It currently has a 475W PS, it's a Dell, so they put in the bare minimum, so I'm thinking a 550W or 650W at most.

Any suggestions? Taken a couple look at Corsair, they have a 500W on new egg for $40 that may be my best bet, but figured I'd ask around.

Also, i'll be buying my next pc, not building, so I wouldn't want to get a really nice one that could be the start of a future build.
2 things:

1) I had the 4870 before my current card. I'm surprised you can run it with a 475 Watt PS, to be honest. It was a bit of a power hog, I upgraded to a 750 Watt PS around the same time I installed that card because of things I read about it. For that reason, and for future compatibility, I would recommend a 650 watt minimum. Also, you need to be really careful that it is a high-quality power supply, all watts are not equal.

This is a pretty decent and easy to understand guide to understanding power supplies from a legit source:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-psu-review,2916.html

This one tends to get a bit more technical, but still pretty understandable:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1036

2) You mentioned that you have a Dell. You need to verify whether or not it used a custom power supply and whether or not a standard power supply will plug into the Dell motherboard. For a while, Dell was manufacturing a motherboard and PS where the connection was custom wired for that combination, rather than following the standard wiring pattern. That obviously can cause all kinds of issues, from simple incompatibility to frying the motherboard if the user is able to get the main plug connected. So definitely double-check that a standard power supply can be used in your machine at all.

I like how Steam is making a big deal out of using tags to help people search games better. Way to copy something the porn industry discovered 5 years ago!

Pretty nice Humble Bundle with a few days left. A crap ton of Sid Meier's games for next to nothing. Civ 3 complete, 4 complete, 5 complete, Pirates! Railroads and his 2 Ace Patrols.

Best Buy has deals on XBox Gold and PS+, and Walmart is offering a free game with an XBO purchase:

http://kotaku.com/titanfall-pre-orders-new-humble-weekly-psn-live-eshop-1521402975
Where? I can't find anything on this.
Really? It's listed after the games up top.

Edit: It appears only the PS+ offer is from Best Buy. The XBox Live Gold deal is directly from MS.

If you need to re-up your various gaming subscriptions, Microsoft will sell you a year of Xbox Live Gold for $40, or you can get a $10 PlayStation promo code with your $50 purchase of PlayStation Plus from Best Buy. Xbox Live Gold (12 Months) | $40 or PlayStation Plus (12 Months) | $50 + $10 Promo Code
Ya, sorry... thanks for clarifying.

Such a fun game. I have the manual and CD from when it was released. Even though I hated that stupid dancing game, you had to do it to try and score the hottest Governor's daughter. :bag:

RAMMING SPEED!

that's my impression of my wife doing an impression of me playing Pirates! on steam.

Thief looks really good, I may have to invest in that one (though I feel like I should wait until I take the plunge and get a XBOne when newer models come out.

WildStar looks really nice, from the limited gameplay I've seen, it has the WoW feel to it that other MMOs lack.
So very cartoony and kiddie, with giant glowing arrows and exclamation marks... but does look very solid and fleshed out.
Got some Wildstar Beta invites yesterday.

Hopefully its not EZ mode.
Initial impression is WOW-In-Space. With a heavy dose of Dirk the Daring humor (Dragons Lair). And lots of lag.

*But I haven't exactly gotten very far.

my usual question with new MMOs is "how far can you get playing solo?"

I have no idea yet. And Im probably playing one of the weaker solo classes (pure melee warrior). This is all very new to me.

So i got the game Rocksmith, and bought a guitar today. Playing guitar is not easy, any advice? anybody else have this game? what songs are easy to learn from?

You'll probably get better feedback from the Rocksmith thread: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=620396&p=13731584

Aside from the game, just practice your scales and learn your basic chord fingerings (I'm sure you can find a zillion websites with this info). After a little while, go on youtube to see videos of how to play your favorite songs. It takes time and dedication, but it's a lot of fun if you stick with it.

Thanks for the advice.

Turns out I have a 3 day weekend so decided I'd give it a try immediately, so I stopped by frys on my way home. Found a refurb 600W Corsair for less than $50, perfect for what I needed. Just finished installing and I'm back up to 1920x1080 in games, no power off's.

Another update...

WILDSTAR is cumbersome.

Polished and ready to roll but with an overburdened screen. I'd much rather be playing Elder Scrolls Online.

My woman (who is beta testing both) came to the same conclusion.

Just finished up Rage. Played it maybe 16 hours total. I enjoyed it. Not sure if there's a play plus? It just sorta went back to the initial campaign screen.

Yeah this looks really good. I know I should hold off and wait till it drops in price but I'll likely get it on release day. Also looking forward to Plants vs Zombie Garden Warfare, kids will love it.

Less than 24 hours to buy Civ 3, Civ 4 and Civ 5 an all the expansions for only $15 with the Humble Sid Meier Bundle

Do it, do it now.

Also, anyone play Marvel Heroes currently? I played it in Beta and it was awful but started playing it last Saturday and find it to be in a much better state.

So I kept working Fallout this weekend. I got my first follower, Dogmeat. I got myself some better guns including a mini-gun and an assault rifle. For the longest time my best gun was the 10 mm. Not good.

I don't think there is a play plus. But I am pretty sure I played it longer. Did you have the extra content for the sewers and stuff?

Probably not. I got a copy for $6.99 at Gamestop. I did use a code that I think gave me some extra armor and weapons maybe. It may have been shorter because I didn't do any of those delivery missions. I hate those timed things. That could have added some playtime.

Are you a good guy or bad guy?

I started the game out murdering EVERYBODY. The Doc, the people at the saloon, the escaped convicts, those Elvis dudes down to the last man. It was too much fun.

This went on for a few more towns. Bodies everywhere. Then a gaggle of about 12 bounty hunters chased me down and gave me a firm talking to. I did what any criminal would do and shot the leader in the face. To this very day I have never seen more rockets and explosions then they tossed at me prior to my quick death.

They literally scared me straight.

Just started Left Behind the DLC for The Last of Us.

Freaking great.

What an incredible game Naughty Dog gave us. The best game of this last gen. No doubt.

Finally snagged a PS4 this weekend. Grabbed a copy of NBA2K14 to keep me occupied until MLB The Show 14 (the main reason I went PS4 over Xbox One) releases. Come on May!!!!

Any recommended downloads?

Assassins Creed Black Flag is probably the only game from the opening day batch that is worth buying. Also make sure to get PS+ and get the free game for February before the month is over.

Lego Marvel is awesome.

Yes on the PS+ recommendation. Outlast is a spectacular game. Short but very sweet.

Playing Pirates! now. I played the original back in the day. This version is slicked up really nice. I like it. Also figured out how to play Rift. Much more entertaining now that I have figured more of it out.

Kind of playing grey. I generally only kill in self defense and I refrain from stealing. However those are not hard fast rules. If you got something and I have to have it I will try bargaining but I am getting it one way or the other.

I restarted because I felt like I made some early game noob mistakes first time, left too much stuff laying around amongst other things. In that first play through I got attacked by 3 guys outside the Wal-Mart clone. I was too busy killing them to notice but I wonder if they were bounty hunters. They said something like " Do you think you can run around and do what you do without anyone noticing?" then the shooting started. They all; got dead.

Oh also killed my first Enclave soldier last night. Dogmeat comes in pretty handy. He distracted him and I took him out.

worth the money?
I would say if you were invested in the story as much as the game play….then yes. It fills some holes in the story….really cool I how it is done.

Highly reccommended.
Cool - one of the few games I "got into" the story

Anyone play Skyrim on PC that could suggest any choice mods they use?

After playing TESO and turning on my 360 for the first time in years today only to find my original xbox copy of Morrowind in the disc tray I feel like getting back into Skyrim, I'm just not a fan of the core game, looking for any kind of overhaul mod.

Appreciate it.

Beautiful, ore veins were one of the few things Skyrim did right, very realistic -- so much so that you have to have eagle eyes to spot them.

Definitely going to use this.
