Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

I wil continue to the be the guy in this thread that posts about games that are 5 years old in the midst of talk about all the new releases.

Just bought Deus Ex Human Revolution for myself on the advice of Andy D. It better be good. Also decided to grab a few other games to enjoy with my son so Amazon prime'd a deal for the latest NHL offering, latest MLB offering and grabbed him Minecraft just because it was basically free for me.

Yup. Welcome to 2007. Invitee, me.

I've been playing Minecraft for a little over a month again. The mods intrigue me.

Deus Ex is fun. I got stuck mid way through and didn't go back yet but the story and game mechanics were pretty cool.

I'm knee deep in a. 2009 title- as in one that even older then the previously old 2010 game I was playing.

Yeah I am not sure how old Fallout 3 is but it ain't new. And I am still dabbling with Dark Souls.

By the way how is Dead Island? It's free with Gold.

Dead Island is IMO garbage.
Yeah I gave it 30 minutes and deleted it from my HD - really glad I never bought it. Zombies are way overdone right now and it was just a boring game. It's what far cry 3 would be if they took the freedom and the fun out of it.

I'm playing XCom. I enjoy it but I have a hard time not having a "perfect" game. I made a mistake early on building lots of jets and didn't leave money for anything else and have been fighting back from that ever since that point. I probably should have restarted because I was just messing with things to get the hand of it, but wanted to see if I could overcome.

These thoughts seem to go with what I have heard from other people. I guess I'll skip the download, thanks for the input.

I just started last of us, but after that I'm going to start moving back through the last gen games I was always a little interested in but never got around to playing before I upgrade. Max Payne, Halo Wars, and Metal Gear solid 4 are in the queue. Nice thing is they are all basically free if you buy them used online at this point.

FACT: The NES Advantage was the greatest console controller ever.
It has that nostalgia factor but it was 42 lbs of plastic and steel.
Yea, that thing was huge. I had the turbo controller, but I didn't like that either. I think I only used it for one game (I cannot recall which) where that turbo function really felt necessary. I had the powerglove, which I guess seemed cool at first, but I don't recall ever using the thing. The PowerPad was a lot of fun with their summer Olympics game. Especially the sprints and hurdles.

Spent last night on ESO Beta taking a dark elf Nightblade to level 6 and today taking an Orc Dragon Knight to level 5.

Somewhat fun but I'm not seeing the allure of shelling out money on a monthly basis to play.
Took a character from each faction to level 10 this weekend for the second time. Agree completely about the subscription, the only thing really keeping me in the game is the setting, the game itself is not that fun.

Combat system is pretty poor and unpolished... still, which ill give them the benefit of the doubt and say we're using an old build for the stress test. Hate how restrictive the skill system is, you get five skills and an ultimate, at least when you swapped weapons in GW2 you also swapped skills giving you 14 or 16 active skills, I can't remember specifically.

It must be said however, the game is beautiful and I'm running it at med-high.

Likely won't be buying, definitely not if they keep the subscription model -- I can't justify spending money on top of the purchase to play a game that is roughly five times the size of Skyrim with about a tenth of the depth (which is saying a lot considering Skyrim was babies first elder scrolls.)
Absolutely. Elder Scrolls is partially around free form skill development and this online version is a million miles from that.

To be fair, you get five skills per Skill tree and you have a wide version of trees to pull from - weapon styles, class skills, race skills, etc. The issue is mostly in the class skills restriction.

If picked up Fallout 3 today I don't think I would have any idea it was released way back in 2008 from the game play.

I hope the next generation of consoles (ps4 and xb1) are similar in that fact.

You get that in ESO at level 15. Can swap and have 5 more and another ultimate.

I think the graphics give it away a bit. But yeah game play wise no real differences.

Level 51 and hour 60 into Dragons Dogma now. Have not even touched the Dark Arisen content yet.

Fun game. In reading about post game content, it sounds fantastic. Can't wait to try it.

I wish their were more weapon upgrades though. Because of the enhancements, I have bern with the same set of daggers since level 30 and sounds like I can't upgrade until either post game or getting into the Dark Arisen content, which I am waiting to be closer to level 60ish to start.

watch your shields. when they go, get behind cover. jump. keep moving. learn your favorite power combos and use them as often as possible.
Trying to take on "Mercy" right now with my assassin. There must be a way to get behind these guys carrying a shield but I haven't been able to master it.This game is so much better than Far Cry 3 it's amazing Ubisoft did them both.
so couple of questions, do i just click R3 or is there some other sneak attack...

so i unlocked the hologram ability. how do you cancel it

I'll be honest- unless there is something that I just can't live without- I don't see myself picking up a system before Christmas.
Exactly, there hasnt been a single game released or to be released soon that is giving me the itch. There are even rumors about MLB The Show for PS4 not being released until April at the earliest. Infamous looks awesome but the last one kind of sucked so Id like to see reviews before I purchase it and I certainly dont think its a system seller. Its gonna be a lot longer than I thought until good games (AKA system sellers) are released for PS4 at least.

I knew you unlocked weapon swap at lvl 15, wasn't sure if skill bar was tied to your weapon set.

Doc Mercy is a PITA at lower levels. There is no way to get in behind him so you pretty much need to take it slow and sneak'n'snipe your way through his hordes before triggering him. Once you trigger him I would run back and try to weaken him as much as you can before getting too close again.

My biggest problem with BL2 is that no matter how bad### my character was a typical bandit could still one-shot my shields.

Seriously, I killed BNK3R, Handsome Jack, The Warrior and all the DLC bosses and some puny, nameless bandit is one shotting my shields and digging into my health? That's ####### ######## man!

Yeah that ticks me off when a game does this, " I just killed the big bad that was going to crush the universe under his boot and this half naked bandit armed with a rubber band and paper clip almost killed me". Very frustrating.

I really enjoyed DE:HR, fun game with great style (if some cheesy voice acting) and cool skill upgrades. What platform are you playing? It shows up on steam sales quite regularly in the $5 range, I am sure it shows up on sales for other platforms too

I don't remember trying this technique but looks pretty simple if people are having some issue with Doc Mercy

Hologram only lasts a short time if you attack while the hologram is deployed it will cancel it.

2008 isn't that old for games and there are a ton of top notch titles out there that are worth exploring.

Batman Arkham Asylum (2009)

Bioshock (2007)

Company of Heroes (2006)

Fallout 3 (2008)

Half Life 2 (2004)

Portal (2007)

Rome: Total War (2004)

The Witcher (2007)

Yeah that is a nice slate of games. I haven't played Portal, Co of Heroes, or the original Witcher yet. Loved Rome, HL2, and Asylum. Bioshock lost me about halfway through. I think Fallout 3 will be going on my list of loved games when all is said and done.

I'm definitely in wait and see mode right now. I don't expect to make a purchase before Christmas either.
Same here. I have so many great games I am playing and enjoying on my PS3 and have a bunch still yet to play. I have plenty to keep me busy for a couple of more years before I jump to the PS4.

No problem with waiting at all. And The Show is the real system seller for me anyway.....I can wait for The Show 15 before making the switch.

Yeah I have so many games to play now I could go a long time before I need anything that will only play on a next gen console. Plus I plan to keep my 360 regardless.

I bought a PS4 only because I won a substantial amount of cash in Vegas and I couldn't think of anything more splurgy to spend some of that money on. I'll likely not be pursuing too many games on it until they are on sale. The PS3 remains hooked up and 80% of my gaming these days is still on the PC.

Run, don't walk, and get Portal.

My only problem with Bioshock (and this holds for the whole series) is there are too many, IMO, useless powers (plasmids, vigors whatever). In my experience I relied on 2 (3 at the most) exclusively. But it has top notch story telling and great FPS mechanics.

The Witcher starts off horribly. The mechanics are tough to figure out at first and the writing/voice over is horrendous. It starts to recover in chapter 1 and comes on strong from chapter 2 on.

Not sure how the sales prices work for xbox but if you didn't get a sale price I would return it and wait because it seems to be a commonly reduced item.

Speaking of old games, just started playing StarCraft II over the weekend. Really enjoying it, but wow, besides an updated graphics look, and a little bit of an upgrade system, they didn't change a thing. Guess if it works and all. Also amazed how long it is taking them between versions. They must have like 99% of blizzard working on WOW and 2 guys left on the StarCraft team.

I think the most impressive thing about StarCraft is for an overhead strategy game, they do a really good job with the overall story and creating some characters that actually matter to the player.

Pretty sure legacy of the void (2nd expansion) is already done, Blizzard releases games in cycles and never competes with itself. D3 expansion coming out this year, also another WoW expansion AND Hearthstone -- dont think we'll be seeing LotV until 2015.

Forgot to add Mass Effect and Dead Space to my list. Both came out in 2008 and are terrific games.
I know people love Mass Effect but it was very draggy when I tried starting it. I am going to give it another go later as I didn't really give it a fair shot but so far not impressed.

Yup. The original Starcraft was great for that. I'm not so sure about SCII as I have only played a very small portion of it. I do agree that it seems like virtually the same game.

I also think it is virtually impossible to micromanage an army (unless you are a 17 year old Korean kid) unless you want to spend hundreds of hours just working on your APM. From my limited amount of playing time I just throw as many units as I can into one big blob, send them towards the enemy and hope for the best.

The fact the SC2 expansions are coming out every three years or whatever is nuts. Slowest developing story ever.

It is far from perfect from a game play perspective. Driving the Mako is a frustrating experience at best (it is truly fun only for seriously warped personalities, I'm talking about, like, massively disturbed individuals) and a lot of the interiors repeat themselves, particularly as it relates to combat. The graphics are a little dated and the 3rd person perspective takes some time to get the hang of (it did for me at least).

However it may very well be the best story telling of any video game franchise ever. And if you like good stories in your games they you start with Mass Effect before moving onto the more refined ME2 & ME3. If the story doesn't mean too much to you then there is no problem starting with ME2, which gives you the option to make the decisions that carry over from ME before actual ME2 game play begins.

Well it wasn't really the Mako, which I kind of enjoyed. The whole game just had the feeling of been here, done this. Like I said I am going to take another crack at it down the line but really I was bored.

I sat down to play Outlast for the first time last night. My girlfriend was watching on the couch and to heighten the mood, we turned the lights off. We both screamed at the first "pop out" moment and I was too freaked out to continue playing.

:scared:

I might try to digging into it again tonight with the lights on this time around and by myself. Watching someone else hiding behind a blanket doesn't help my nerves much.

:lmao:

That and the fact they keep the price so high and almost never reduce it. I think when I bought it this year, it was the first time I've ever seen amazon drop it to $20, and right after I bought it, already back up to almost $40. I'm kicking myself for not getting the heart of the swarm expansion when it was on sale last week! I may either have to not be a cheap ******* or wait 2 more years to play the expansion.

I played ME1 and about 1/4 of ME2 a few years back. I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away. I was also playing i a laptop at the time so a sub-optimal experience from that perspective. I have all 3 and will go back at some point and do it from the start.

Of course, I also have the Deadspace trilogy and Far Cry trilogy to work through as well, not to mention Witcher2 and a whole lot of others including Fallout 3 and Vegas and Skyrim starting to clamor for replays in my head.

I'm kicking myself for not getting the heart of the swarm expansion when it was on sale last week! I may either have to not be a cheap ******* or wait 2 more years to play the expansion.
It added a great new single player campaign, but there was no meaningful change to the multiplayer (that would draw the interest of the casual fan at least), and there were only marginal graphical improvements...which did nothing but tick me off, because while my then-new laptop could run SC2 no problem in 2010, it was definitely struggling in 2013 with whatever updates had been put in. No reason they couldn't have released the last two campaigns in 2011.
