Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (4 Viewers)

I forgot how funny the random nonsense is in Bethesda games.

I'm playing FO3. I come across a supermutant camp. I take them all out by laying a bottlecap mine field and drawing them into it one by one.

Great. I enter the camp to find a captive. I'm a good guy, so I cut him loose and let him keep his supplies. He thanks me and runs off.

Good karma gained!

Then I hear a distant BOOM!

Evil karma gained!

I run back out to find the captive's limbs strewn all over the place. Apparently the supermutants didn't set off all of my mines.

Ooops.

So continuing Fallout news. I have made most of the trophies I am going to make in FO3. I have a couple more left. Some I won't get like being bad karma at level such and such. But I have already knocked out 53 out of 72 I think. So that's what I did this weekend wandered and picked up missed side missions. Like the Nuka Cola challenge. Need 8 more for that one. Cleared out some places just some good ol' casual exploration and killing. Still just me and DM. But I am going to head back to DC to find more locations and I will be picking up my buddy for that.

So I went ahead and picked up New Vegas and started a game. I got the Courier Stash which was helpful. I was mainly looking to get a feel and will start a new game next weekend now that I know what I will be hitting early on. Story seems a little more in depth. Maybe it's because I have gotten the hang of the mechanics but I am blazing through this. Is it shorter than 3? Because like in a few hours I have already caught up to the guys that shot me and killed the Khans that were involved. All I wanted to do was talk, conversation is a lost art. Anyway I feel like I am a long way through the main mission already and I have been grabbing every side mission I can.

One thing I noticed is I only get to pick perks every other time I level up. Am I doing something wrong or is that the way it is?
New Vegas doesn't really get going (well, that's not totally true depending on how much you know of the game but that was my experience in my first playthrough of NV) until you get to Vegas. There are a lot of side quests though depending on your route. You'll pick them up in time.

The main quest in NV gets complicated in Vegas. So, know that while you are blazing through the main quest now, it will get more complex with multiple paths to "victory."

Thanks again for the updates, NCC!

I never used a follower in FO3 (because of how overpowered you can get via perks) but always used at least one in New Vegas.

Yeah this one seems a little tougher. I got DM by accident and my super mutant is a great pack horse. Could have been fine without either. Might need one here though.

I'm likely to get it.
I will too. It looks good, but there's also not a lot I'm interested in on XB1 as yet, since I've (mostly) finished AC4 and Tomb Raider DE. Aside from a bit of NFS and Madden here and there the cupboard looks pretty bare.

It's been advertised forever. I remember a video of gameplay bouncing around back last November.

My Xbox1 has not had a video game played on it since two weeks after it came out.

Not even Titanfall? That's the best game of either console out so far...

(But, yes, I agree - slim pickings in general.)

Haven't seen anything on that yet, but I'm pretty interested in that game. Gameplay looks a lot like Assassin's creed, is it the same studio at all? Maybe it's not, but the mini-map, and the positioning of the character when it shows him climbing up a wall look really similar to AC.

Wow, it seems to be getting pretty hard to pick up PS3 games lately. I usually track old game prices on amazon for games I'm kinda interested in and wait for them to drop price to pick them up. Now days it seems like they are just going out of stock. One example is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, the PS3 version has been out of stock at amazon for the last month or so. The Xbox version is still there, and listed as more coming soon, but nothing on the PS3.

Anyone have any other good websites they like to buy games from? I pretty much only use amazon or local best buy.

The other game I'd like to pick up is the Resistance collection, never played any of them and always heard good things, like DD:DA, it, and all other resistance games are completely out of stock at Amazon.

did you get any of the DLC? I'm only halfway through the game, but got the ultimate version with all the DLC. there's one where you go to a national park and basically join a war between 2 native tribes. I liked that one a lot.

Just buy it on ebay. There are over 50 for sale right now and if you buy used will be much cheaper than Amazon.

I am waiting to see if I really like the game first. I hate buying DLC and then feeling meh about a game. So now that I am going to go back in for a serious run at it i'll decide. Based on my limited first play I am thinking I will be buying the DLC. I think you are talking about the DLC that takes place in Zion National Park Utah.

Question about Far Cry 3 single player: Is there any downside to clearing all the forts and climbing all the radio towers prior to really diving into the story missions?

Theres a retired NCR sniper in NoVac that is really overpowered just like DogMeat was. I liked ED-E or Lilly.

Followers are much more important in NV, each has their own unique storyline that opens up missions. Some of the different factions or groups in the game you can unite (or not) are pretty fun too, like the Boomers or the Ghouls at the rocket factory.

Not that I can think of. It gives you a better free weapon selection for the radio towers and fast travel points for the forts. Both come in very handy when you want to start really running the game.

Also, don't spend money on weapons, you will get free access to those as you clear towers, I'd mainly use money to upgrade weapons, I thought those were useful, and to replenish ammo. Money tended to be pretty tight at the beginning of the game, so you are better off waiting until you unlock a weapon from the towers rather than buying.

I missed ED-E first time through, you can get it early if you have the right perks. I think it also to me a while to realize you can have 2 companions in NV one of the robots, and one of the "humans".

My favorite combo was ED-E with either Boone (ex-NCR sniper) or Veronica.

I really only used Ed-E in New Vegas unless I was doing a companion mission. First and foremost for storage but Ed-E also shoots at enemies within range that may have been outside my perception or in my peripheral.

Although there is no more helpless of a feeling than when Ed-E would fire at a DeathClaw and I was at level 4 trying desperately to run in the opposite direction of certain death. Sometimes I'd just reload the game right then.

Gonna try to do some FO3 damage tonight. Still going to focus on non main story to get my xp up and defuse that bomb. Probably will start with the wastelander book missions and try to finish that up... There were 3 I think... already did 1.

Question about Far Cry 3 single player: Is there any downside to clearing all the forts and climbing all the radio towers prior to really diving into the story missions?
The only issue is, you'll run out of forts and towers on the mainland and won't be able to advance across the map until you knock out some of the story. Personally, I find many of the story missions on the starting land mass painful. So I ended up stuck having to do a bunch back to back, which I did not enjoy, because I had cleared the mainland out. So you may want to consider spreading those out a bit.

Finished chapter 1 of the wasteland book. Standing in the bomb pit to get sick was boring. Moving on to chapter 2.

Also deactivated the bomb and got the house. Spent much time going back to places where stuff was left to get it to the house. Got that done. A workman's night really.

How do you deactivate land mines?

A button as you get close to them.

I started this up around the same time as you. Headed over to find the radio tower the other night. That was an adventure.

Every time I get close to one it blows up. And I still can't see them all that well.

Radio station was a fun battle. Wished it was longer. And that super giant mutant was a headache. But that is where I stopped the main story for the most part. Went through some of the subways towards the museum but I stopped after dupont circle and seeing penn ave and have gone back to side stuff.

Yeah really with land mines I found it easier to just keep walking. I usually out walk the blast. I have a hard time seeing them as well. I have disarmed some but I picked up so many grenades and mines from ammo boxes I started storing them. At this point my house in Megaton may be almost as explosive as the bomb would have been.

So I handled this a little differently. There is a bobblehead in Rivet City you want. So I swam there to avoid the super mutants. By the time I got back to Megaton I only had to take a few sips to get over 600 rads and get the mutation.

Are you sneaking near the mines? I think I always tried to sneak around those. In fact, I sneaked everywhere unless I was in a hurry. :thief:

Check and see if your explosives number is too low. That also might be a problem. Maybe even the sneak number. I always kept mine high, so I'm not sure if a low sneak number will set things off easier. I rarely set anything off unless I was in a hurry. Perhaps when I make a good dent in my backlog, I'll return to Fallout so that I can remember for sure.

NC on land mines:

That is what I do. As soon as I hear that beeping I just take off. I do have to admit though that getting to mineville or whatever that little town with the playground was that I had to get through for the wasteland book almost killed me. I heard one neeping and ran behind the car. Safe from that explosion start walking and then the damn car blew up and took my legs with it. All stim packs later and it almost happened again with that fricken sniper. Took him out with a grenade and got some minor physical pleasure watching his body blow up into pieces in slow motion using the VATS targeting for the grenade.

NC on radiation mission:

This was a little dumb luck on my part. I figured I had to leave the city and well I don't know. But I go out and start walking around and a giant scorpion gets to thinking it should kill me. I'm thinking, hey maybe I am supposed to get poisoned this way so I start walking backwards while it chases me so I am as close to the front door of megaton as possible in case walking is a problem. Instead, the traders that were out front take it upon themselves to kill the thing. Oh well. I took its pieces and didn't know what to do, walked around a killed a few more animals and bugs - those moth bee blot bugs things are a damn headahce - and then went back inside not knowing what to do. Walked near the bomb and saw that standing in the water was bad so I figured what the eff and just stood there until I got up to 600 rads. Maybe 10 minutes? I diffused the bomb while I was standing there - I did in fact have enough to do it afterall.

Go see the supply chick and get my mutation - I'm supposed to heal quicker right? I'm not seeing that. And then the kid to get my house and then I did the back breaking work of getting all my stuff that I have been laying around and leaving. This is a massive help. Now I can take clothes off of bodies as I wasn't doing that because of weight. I was carrying a good 190 all the time and now I am down to about 80 or 90 lbs with everything stored. Sold a ton of crap and broken weapons have a good 1000+ in caps and focused now on the second chapter of her research book - the mission I took was to kill rats in the sewer. I saw that I hadn't gone to where it wanted me to go yet so I ended for the night instead of walking around again.

Slax on Mines - no, not sneaking. Running like hell when I hear them beep. I will try the sneaking next go round. Again, it is a combination of my eyes and the colors and their similarities in the backdrop of the game but I really can't see them that well. I don't think my sneak is that high - I've been focusing upgrades on being able to defuse that bomb and then on the ones that seem to give you more bonus growth like the intellect ones that give you a few extra XP's when you upgrade. Now that the bomb is diffused I am on the low end of level 5 so I have a way to get to level 6 and get a new upgrade. I might do some research on the best upgrades from this point out....

Bobbleheads -

I have none. HAve never seen one. And I don't think I've been to Rivet city. Besides doing my wastelader book missions should I just try to explore around everything and see all the parts of the map before I get back into the main mission? I guess my question, worded differently - is should I explore and find things before all the story lines make me find those cities and things? I thinkt hat hurt me a little with the super quicky mart mission because I had already been there and took all the medicine so when I did it for the supply chick there was just food. I don't know if that makes any difference for what she gave me for doing it though.

That was a long post.

Ok on bobbleheads - you should have grabbed one before you left the vault. That was the medical one and it is on your dads desk where he was doing your checkup before the test. Puts 15 point into medical skill IIRC. No biggie you get another chance at it in a bit. But the next time you get into 101 will be your last so be sure to get it while there. In Rivet City is the Intelligence bobblehead that will add a point to your specials. In Megaton in the Sheriffs house is the strength bobblehead adds a point to your specials. You can go and get that any time the door isn't locked. It isn't stealing to take any bobblehead that I am aware of.

On the rads you can drink the water and also get irradiated quicker. But regardless you got it done.

On the mole rat mission that one is pretty easy and the stick is a lot of fun. I'll let you know it does a lot more than repel them. And you can almost always find enough molerats around Megaton and the environs to not have to go to the sewer. But it is good to have that location as it comes in handy later.

Now on the wandering around it can occasionally mess you up like the medicine thing but for the most part I don't think wandering around has hurt me any on the main story or even any side mission I can recall.

Could I have sold the bobblehead early on? I honestly don't remember. I don't think I did. I was wondering if you ever get to go back to the vault. Seems to me that there should be a way but I guess if it was that easy the game's point would kind of be lost. Never saw one in the sheriff's house and I was in there all the time so I will have to look around again. Interesting.

I don't know if you can sell them, never tried. In your new house there is a place to store them. You just activate it and it pulls the booblehead from your inventory for display. The strength bobblehead is on the desk on Lucas Simms bedroom on the second floor. The Intelligence bobblehead in Rivet City is in the Science Lab. Now if you go to the lab you're fine just don't talk to anyone there as that may jumble up the main story line a bit for you.

You can't sell them. They are instant perks. There's only one bobblehead that you can't miss when you play the mission it's on. (I can't remember the mission, perhaps someone can help me out on that.) I believe the rest you can go back for at another point if you miss them.

If you sneak with the mines/tripwires/etc around, be sure not to suddenly start running when you hear them beep. You can usually stop in your tracks, see where it is and disable it when you start hearing it.

Another big reason I like sneaking is that there's a prompt to tell me if I'm being seen at all. It may take longer to get places, but it's safer. I'm sure gung-ho types probably don't care about safer, so it depends on your play style.

You can permanently miss the one in 101 because you aren't allowed to go back after the second time. You can permanently miss the one while doing the Broken Steel DLC clearing the base because once the door closes and you are in the main office you can't go back and get it. I know as I missed that one. I think it is the Explosive Bobblehead. You can lose the one in Megaton if you blow up the city without getting it.There may be a couple more but those I am sure of.

has anyone ever played a true tank/melee character in any of the Fallout games? I'd like to try it, but I don't think there's any way it would be even remotely feasible. taking out a tribe of super mutants with a samurai sword? yeah, good luck with that.

Love me some Power Fist action. Something very satisfying about knocking someone's head off with a punch.

Well probably not with a sword. But with the proper skill point distribution, the Death Claw gauntlet and maybe the Shishkebob you'd be pretty effective. But you would definitely have to be sure to hit all the right perks and specials.
