Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (8 Viewers)

So I learned a valuable lesson in XCOM 2 today. If your evac zone is on a roof, and you blow up and collapse said roof, then the evac area is moved. And on a timed mission, it is likely moved far enough you can't get everyone there. At first I thought it was just the mission dicking with me, that it had been designed that way. But then I replayed it, grenaded the same group of aliens, collapsed the same roof, and got screwed again. Lesson learned.
good thing you learned it early. much tougher when you learn a lesson 6 months into an ironman campaign and need to start over from scratch

I killed a lot of Nazis in Wolfenstein. New Order and Old Blood.
Every time someone mentions Wolfstein, I think of the game I played on my Amiga back in the late 80s where you moved around a "3D" map shooting Nazis, stealing their uniforms, sneaking past guards, etc. That was one hell of a game. Apparently a new version was dropped in the past few years? Any old bastards like me play both? What's the connection?

Yea, I am nowhere near the point of Ironman. First playthrough and it is getting hard fast. Realizing I messed up many, many things already. Build order, lack of resources to build with, etc.

I downloaded Disc Jam late last night and ended up playing about ten games before I turned it off. I believe it's still free through PS+ through the end of the day today. They describe it as a hybrid between air hockey and tennis. Lots of fun. Gives you that Rocket League feeling.

Working through my Steam catalog been playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, like Ryse it's another console port so there is some wonkiness in the controls on PC.  But also, like Ryse, it is visually stunning and the voice acting is top notch (turns out the lead character is voiced and animated by Andy Serkis so, of course it's top notch).  Solid story, chapters aren't overly long, good combat, nice mix of enemies and they hit the tone of the dialogue spot on.  Two problems I have are 1) you can't skip cut scenes so if you restart a level you have to sit through them again (fortunately none are too long, unlike Ryse which had a few that ran on-and-on) and 2) the perspective changes get annoying. You occasionally go from third person shooter perspective to third person platformer-ish perspective and a little bit in between.  It makes for an occasionally visually confusing experience particularly if you get cornered by enemies and suddenly can't see yourself to fight back.

Definitely recommend for purchase the next time it comes up on Steam sale.

I played Enslaved when it came out on the PS3. I really liked it, too. Wished they had done a sequel or something. Tons of fun.

I am really enjoying Divinity Original Sin.

I am unsure if I am just clueless or if it by design but I have absolutely no idea what I am doing on quests.  I am so used to having a quest be set and then you complete it using quest markers.

In Divinity I have about 25 active quests and have no idea how to advance any of them so I am just playing the game in pure explorer mode and if I advance a quest it seems to be more by chance than specifically going to a certain spot on the map.
Walkthrough.

This was valuable when you got stuck on quests.  Some of them were obscure but most could be figured out by referencing the log you keep during the game.  One of my all-time favorites.

thanks.  I have that walk through too.  It is very nicely written but I want to see how far I can get by pure wandering.  I am sure I will have to reference multiple times as I have already run into a few puzzles that I can not solve.

Agreed. There's not a ton of depth to it, but it's quite a bit of fun and games go by very quickly.

Is anyone playing ARK: Survival Evolved?  If so, please read on and help an ignorant dad if you can.

My son bought this game and loves it. He plays mostly by himself, as he is not allowed to interact online with anyone but his friends, and none of them play (until now).  So he built this great little world for himself, tamed all these awesome beasts and fashioned weapons, etc. On Sunday night, he comes upstairs in tears, telling me he's lost all his progress, all his tools and tamed dinos. Apparently, he was playing online with a friend who had just bought the game. He joined his friends "clan" (I think that's what he said). Later, when he returned to his own world, his one-man clan was essentially dead. I'm not sure how to describe it based on what he said, but he told me he can see his chest with all his loot, but can't open it to get at this stuff, nor can he do anything with his animals, etc.

TIA FBGs

I don't play the game but that sounds like he is logged into the wrong server for solo play.  He likely logged into a different server to play multiplayer, but his gear is tied to the the original server he played on for solo play.

The good news is that if he sees all his gear he has not lost anything.  He just likely needs to get into the right mode to play.

I don't know if we have many players here who play this game but you will likely get an instant answer to this question on reddit.  Just copy what you wrote here to the link below and wait a few minutes for some answers.

Dark souls 3 50% off right now on steam.

Worth it?
fantastic game.

Are you a fan of any of the parents of Dark Souls 3? (Demon Souls, Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne)  If so you will love DS3 as it brings back all the fun elements with incredible graphics to boot.

Just experienced the joy in XCOM 2 of having an enemy reinforcement flare dropped right in the middle of my team. I had a full turn to get everyone in position, behind cover, on overwatch, just in time for them to drop in the middle of it. Like shooting alien fish in a barrel! Kind of peeved though that not a single one dropped any gear. In fact, those drops are becoming extremely rare already, and I just took on my first Advent mission.

I've got a couple of friends that play Ark, I'll text them and ask.  They're in Iceland together with their wives right now, but they've been texting.

Played the Gwent beta on PS4. It's the perfect game for catching up on podcasts. I've never really played these types of card games so it's new and fun to me. A bit different than the actual game in the Witcher, which kind of tripped me up at the start. Decent amount of strategy but once you get a plan and a deck built for that, it gets easier.

COD in WW2? What is this madness?

Honestly though Modern Warfare, as much as I liked the campaign, was the beginning of the end for that genre with the younger generation. A whole group of kids grew up with that style of Multiplayer. I hate it. Never played more than that original MW.
Call of Duty 2 is still the best CoD, IMO.  I loved Modern Warfare and MW2 also (and I consider them the last good ones).  I feel like I'm the only one who actually played the first CoD these days.  It felt so much better than the Medal of Honor games that were around at the time.  But yes, it was Modern Warfare's showing at e3 that seemed to put the series on the map.

I think my favorite shooter was Battlefield Vietnam. Loved so much about it but the soundtrack was king.
I almost like the original BF: Vietnam more than any other BF game, but honestly it's all because of the soundtrack.  But the maps were awesome as well.  The Bad Company 2 DLC just didn't feel as good, IMO.

I think it's time for Americans to move away from our obsession with killing Nazis. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for killing Nazis but how many times can we kill Nazis and in how many different ways can we kill Nazis before killing Nazis just becomes mundane?
It's easy to determine why America has an obsession with fighting Nazi's and World War II.  Because that's the last war in which we did any good, and we had a clear win over an actual unambiguously evil villain who posed a genuine threat.  Rather than any of our recent wars where we just run in, stomp all over a developing nation, and run out again, while declaring victory around the time the population have to start eating their own dead.

A Rocket League Youtuber I follow did a few videos on it saying it felt like Rocket League.  But watching videos of Rocket League made me buy the game.  Watching videos of Disc Jam just reminds me of Tennis.    Maybe it's more fun to play.

Sorry for the several reply posts.  I'm catching up on the thread.  I don't get to read FBG every day anymore.

Gee thanks video game Posty.

If you get the 500gb, get a cheap external HDD also. 2tb at least. Should be enough to hold all the games.
How much space does a typical game take up on the hard drive?

Does a game need to be loaded on the hard drive to play?

Do you use hard drive space for anything else?  Movies, etc?

I'm making an assumption here that the XBOX and PS4 work similarly.

Games 40-80 GB pending on game  (small indie type games are much smaller

I think Yes.

YMMV - I don't have anything on my drives but games.

Confirming yes.  If you run out of room, you can uninstall games, and it removes the installation.  It leaves game save files so you can reinstall it later if you decide to play it again.

That however is a pain, so you want to make sure you have enough room to play all the different games you want.

I think we have the 500gb, and can only fit three or four games on it.  One of them is some online only game my 13 year old plays that has an update everytime I turn on the Xbox, so it may just be larger than others.

We have a 2 or 3 TB external drive, and a half dozen games installed, and haven't dented the available space.

Yes, games must be fully installed to play, even if you have the disc.

Most games are 30-50gb. A 500gb hdd will fill up very fast (it's not 500gb just for game installs - the XB1 software uses a ton of it) I would say after all is said and done, a 500gb XB1 will hold 5-7 games on average.

Even if you get the 1TB model, you will still likely need an external HDD sooner rather than later. No sweat - they are cheap and easy. I have a 2TB one that I got for less than $100. So if I were you, I'd go w/ the 500gb model, and get a 2-3TB external HDD too.

NBA Playgrounds looks great. Total NBA Jam ripoff with updated graphics.
Looking forward to this. Also, if you're looking for an NFL Blitz ripoff, Mutant Football League is coming out later this year. I backed the Kickstarter for it earlier this year and I'll be testing the Alpha version of the game later this month hopefully.

Mutant League was around long before Blitz!  Their Mutant League Hockey was the best.

Think I'm going to go this route.  Just ordered the XBOX One S Minecraft 500GB package.  Came with a free crappy Hasbro board game game. My son also asked for and relatives will pick up: Extra controller, Overwatch, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare, Star Wars Battlefront.

I think that should be enough to get him started although I may have to get Madden or FIFA for me... I mean him.

We'll buy the expansion memory if needed and it seems cheaper to buy it separately than to have it in the base system anyway.

Any other games come to mind that are good for an 11 yo (or me)?

The answer in large part depends on what his friends are playing. My son got an xbox at 10, is now 12. He's played the games you mention above, many of the Lego games and a few others. He played the Lego games constantly for a year or more, but those are now in the dust bin, most likely never to be played again. Current favorites are: Destiny (will be buying Destiny 2 for sure), ARK Survival Evolved, FIFA '12. I got him Forza Horizon for Christmas and it hasn't really caught on. I used to play with him on the Wii all the time, now have a hard time even being in the same room when he plays, just because 12 year olds are so annoying.

I realize that. The demo for the new MFL plays like a Blitz/Mutant League Football hybrid.

Don't buy these.  Pay for EA Access.  $30 a year will grant you access to these games plus many, many more, including most of EA Sports games like Madden, Fifa, NHL, etc.  Best value on Xbox.

With EA Access and Xbox Live Gold memberships (4 free games a month), you'll be set for a while on games.  Plus, Microsoft is coming out with their own rental service similar to EA Access soon, so keep an eye on that.

Yeah unless for some reason you have to have a physical copy, just do this.  The newest Madden is already in the vault so that alone pays for itself.

If either of you like basketball, the NBA2K series is the best sports game on the market several years running (in my opinion).  I have a 13 and 15 year old, and that game doesn't leave the Xbox during basketball season, save for the two weeks after they get Madden.  Once they get bored with that, its NBA2K for the next several months.  The best part with a kid is that you can play together on the same team (and it works, unlike Madden) so it doesn't have to be competitive against each other.

You shut your mouth.  MoHAA deserves some respect here, son, for the genre that it launched.  CoD was a great game, no doubt.  Loved it, but it would never have been without MOHAA. :)

MOHAA was good for the time it came out.  But CoD felt so much better at the time of release.  Agreed that it was built on the back of MOH.

Not just built on its back, but from it.  The dev that made CoD came from the dev that made MoH and cannibalized its ranks.
