Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

As someone without a solid gaming computer who has read all about the changes they're making to bring it to consoles, and knowing full well the PC crowd's gripes about it, I am insanely excited for Diablo 3 to hit consoles (only confirmed for PS3 and PS4 right now).It will be the action-RPG I've been waiting for since the Baldur's Gates games and the Champions of Norrath games hit the PS2 way back when. Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon's Dogma, Dungeon Siege 3, Torchlight, etc. have all been good replacements, and some of those are great games in their own right. But none of them scrathed the same itch that the old-school isometric aRPG's like Baldur's Gate and Champions of Norrath games did.I'm pumped.
I've got some bad news :(
I know all of the criticisms of the PC version. They are actually making a lot of changes that I like for the console version.
Bump?
They made a couple of significant changes to the non-core game, the RMAH and always online. This doesn't solve the horrible problems that the game itself has. I'm not saying its a bad game because it isn't, what I'm saying is that all of the core systems within the game are horribly flawed in one way or another - literally all of them. If you were an action RPG fan before D3, and you loved all the old dungeon crawling ARPGs like D2 - you will be disappointed, this is nothing like them. Its a fun play, but it has no depth at all. The skill system is awful in comparison to literally every other ARPG. None of your decisions have any impact on your character. In the end, D3 turned out to be some sort of horrible MMORPG/ARPG monster with the worst of both worlds, removing the horrible MMO features leaves behind the flawed MMO mechanics that were influenced to be driven towards those MMO features. Specifically the item system. Itemization has been a huge feature in every ARPG ever, its half of what defines your character, but in D3 its 100% of what defines your character. Its no coincidence that the item system was developed to be overly simplistic and incredibly convoluted. Same with the stat system. It was all to drive players towards the RMAH.TL:DR removing the RMAH doesn't fix the horrible game mechanics. Its not a bad game, but its certainly not a good game - and its definitely not Diablo.
I'm pretty sure they're heavily tweaking the loot system as well for consoles. I'm not expecting it to be deep, honestly. I'll play Dragon's Dogma, Dark Souls, etc. for that. I'm pumped for an updated kind of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance experience in a darker setting with good graphics and more violence, better loot, and the rare (nowadays) ability to couch co-op a hack/slash/grind action RPG with my girlfriend or even just alone. Not many games scratch that particular itch. Torchlight comes closest possibly, but it's too goofy, shallow, and doesn't provide the multiplayer on consoles. Dungeon Seige 3 sucked, Sacred 2 had horrid inventory issues and you couldn't even trade items when playing couch co-op, nevermind the tiny text issues and lacking choice of character classes. Lord of the Rings:War in the North is good for what it is, but enemy diversity is lacking being in such an established setting, and it doesn't give that old-school isometric view that is really nostalgic for me. Hell, ranged attacks are done in 1st person. Dragon's Dogma is deep, long, and has possibly the best combat in any aRPG ever, but that satisfies a totally different gaming need and isn't multiplayer. There just isn't a lot out there that fills this need for me, and I'm sick of popping the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games or the Champions of Norrath games into my old PS2 to get a good aRPG hack-and-slash experience with a friend. Very tired of those after all these years. So I understand why Diablo 3 doesn't live up to the expectations of the hardcore D2 loving gamer who misses grinding bosses, power-leveling new and unique builds, climbing the ladder, and farming Stones of Jordan to participate in the player-created economy....and I understand why someone who loves Path of Exile for what it is and what D3 isn't (I'm one of those as well). But the reality is that for many of us, D3 on consoles will fill a very particular video game craving that is rarely filled these days. It will suffice. Hell, it will do more than suffice...it'll probably provide hundreds of hours of fun for us. Because we're looking for totally different things from the experience.

Just as I was about to declare war my girlfriend said I was wasting too much time on the computer and made me take the dog for a walk. I didn't get to play again this weekend.

Amazingly deep and intricate game.
So i guess you narrowed the marriage choices down, then? :P

So if I was looking at this how mandatory are the DLC packs? Should one buy a complete pack or just the bare game?
BTW, anyone who is looking at Crusader Kings 2 can get everything for $15 from Amazon right now. Pretty nice deal.

Can't argue with that, I hope it at least is enjoyable for you.

And I just paid 30 bucks on Tuesday for just CK2. Typical luck for me. I think I will wait for a steam sale to pick up the DLCs. Do they really add all that much to the core experience. Would I really miss them?

I actually ordered it last night on CD right before I saw the notice on this. Luckily from the UK, after their working hours. I sent a cancellation request - we'll see how that goes.

So Nintendo must be struggling or something. Apparently they are now enforcing copyright claims on youtube videos of playthroughs of their games, stating that if they do not receive 100% of the ad revenue that they will just C&D the video. Thats not just a percentage of revenue, or a portion of youtubes take - they want all of it, including the content creators cut. What a ####### joke...

From what I've read, the Wii U rollout has been a near disaster.

Here's the latest - EA has NO games in development for the Wii U.

My son finally was able to pick up his pre-order of Metro Last Light that I got him for freaking CHRISTMAS. Am actually interested to hear what people think of it. I have only read about the first one but the setting sounded pretty cool.
I bought the first one a few weeks ago, and really liked it. It's a little different than your typical shooter - every bullet counts. You are always scrounging for ammo and such, which makes perfect sense in the setting. it's also much more tilted towards survivor-horror than it is Call of Duty - very immersive, tense, etc.

I bought Last Light today, and will fire it up tonight. I hear it's prettymuch like the first one, with everything improved (I'm mostly looking forward to better stealth - that's one place the first game lacked a bit). It's getting excellent reviews, so I'm confident I'll like it.
After playing for about three hours, I can definitely confirm that this is very similar to the first game, with all of the kinks worked out. Stealth is better, and a lot of fun. The guns are better. The graphics are better - I'm really enjoying it so far.

I don't whether to thank you or curse you.

Amazon gave me a $5 direct download credit for the last console game I bought as well (that was likely going to expire worthless) so that brings my cost down to $9.99.

An Amazon-exclusive, $100 "Anniversary Edition" of the new Madden will include NFL Sunday Ticket. :o

I was already planning to get the game for my son, so this seems like a no brainer.

Edit: forgot link

Brilliant. Youtube gameplay videos are essentially free advertising for both your hardware and software. Obviously you would want to do everything possible to squelch that sort of thing.

This one definitely goes on my "to do" list. I know the first one got good reviews and this sounds right up my alley even though I don't care that much for shooters.

Well I hope you people are happy with yourselves. I am downloading the Crusaders Kings II demo. I have a bad feeling I am going to get sucked in and then have to buy it. You should be ashamed.

Technically it's $100 for Madden plus NFL Sunday Ticket, and $120 for Madden plus NFL Sunday Ticket minus all the Browns games. Still a good deal though.
It reads like this version of the ticket is only available on mobile devices/tablets, and not through your regular dish.
Yea, that makes it a big "meh" to me.

Looking to jump into RPG and have narrowed it down to Dark Souls or Dragon Dogma. Which one is better? (playing on 360 if that makes a difference).

Dark Souls is much tougher. If your looking at Dragon Dogma, consider the new one which comes with the dlc expansion, bug fixes, and a fast travel system(not in original). Both are excellent choices and time sinks. Dark Souls can be found for cheaper also. Sorry I can't help more.

Depends on what you want -Dragons dogma plays a lot like a MMO (to me). Pretty cool game but I jus felt like I've been there and done that. Dark Souls while one oft favorite games is extremely challenging. It will take you a few hours to just get a feel for the game mechanics/attack system. It does not in any way shape or form guide you where to go or what to do.

Thanks for the feedback Im leaning towards Dragon Dogma as pretty much the only con in reviews was lack of fast travel system.

This is the first time I have heard of Dragons Dogma as an MMO. Can you provide a bit more insight? One of my favorite RPG's of all time was Baldurs Gate. How do each of these stack up against it?

Neither are even close to the same type of game. I'm been around a long time so I'm admittedly jaded. DD just seemed like more of the same to me. Granted its done really well and the monsters/bosses are big and bad and the game is very well done, it's just that this old man is done being someone's errand #####. I'm more qualified to help you along in Dark Souls then I am to give you a full review of DD.

Trying to get the Pop Goes the Weasel achievement on Black Ops 2 Mob of the Dead. Need 2 more. My son and I can do the entire thing alone but you have to do it in 4 player co-op. Xbox gamer tag is Gmanx23.

Just finished Sword of the Stars: The Pit. Starving for some more roguelike games and there are like tons in development and a ton finished sitting in the greenlight queue to be released and none out that I haven't played already.

I know its old, but does anybody play Company of Heroes? The new one comes out next month and I decided to re-download and tool around with the original a bit.

I just finished the main storyline in Sleeping Dogs and I'm now moving into the after-game stuff. Honestly, this game raises the bar quite a bit for GTA5. As you play it, you can't help but feel like you're playing an obvious GTA knock-off, but Sleeping Dogs is dramatically superior to the GTA franchise in several respects:

1) The driving physics actually work and are fun. GTA has always been shaky on driving.

2) Gunplay is pretty good. It's not Uncharted, but it's what we all expect from over-the-shoulder shooters. GTA's shooting mechanics have always been borderline-broken.

3) The melee combat is very good, kind of a hybrid between Batman (not as good as Batman, but you can see the similarities) and Assassins Creed (due to the emphasis on counters). GTA has no melee combat to speak of.

Also, the story in Sleeping Dogs is much better than anything I've seen in a GTA game, although admittedly I never finished San Andreas.

It's not that I'm not going to get GTA5, but I'm really tired of Rockstar's inability to get driving and shooting right in their "driving and shooting" game. The shooting especially is atrocious in Rockstar games. Having played this and inFamous and AC and a bunch of other sandbox games, I can't help but feel like Rockstar needs to work on its gameplay. GTA isn't the only open-world sandbox anymore.

If you were a fan of Wasteland, Game Informer magazine (gameinformer.com I think) has an article on a kickstart game, Wasteland 2, due out in October. Supposedly much the same crew working on it. Looking very forward to this. Definitely hope it makes it to fruition.

I have it, but I've never played the multiplayer. Campaign is good, though.

Been following the kickstarter since the beginning. The alpha footage of the game looks great.

And don't forget the other incredible game they're putting out:

Torment: Tides of Numenera
I can't access their website here at work unfortunately. But in just the few gameplay snippets I saw in the Kickstarter video, it has a Baldur's Gate look and feel to it. Which would be awesome. I think their games may actually run on my laptop, which would be doubly awesome.

Well you guys weren't kidding about Crusaders being intense. I got to mess with it a bit but it seems like it's really too much for the pc I have. After a bit it gives a checksum error and blue screens. Still what I got to see of the demo was very interesting. I was in the process of upgrading my pc anyway once I do I think this will definitely be going on. Now over to update the Skyrim blog.

If you're interested in grand strategy you could try Europa Universalis 3, came out a few years back, not a very resource intensive game at all (less than 2 gbs with all expansions, less than 2gbs of ram) but aside from a few elements is essentially CK2. Instead of taking place from 1066-???? it takes place from 1399-????.I was interested in getting into grand strategy games and was recommended EU3 by a friend.

Are you talking about Crusader Kings 2? It seems weird that your PC can handle Skyrim but not CK2.

Skyrim is Xbox. I had gotten away from playing anything on the PC except for some real old stuff like KOTOR, original Half Life and Civ. Even Civ will sometimes cause a problem. But I have found my next refurb and it should be able to handle Skyrim so CK2 should run no problem. I hope.

Beat Dishonored yesterday. My chaos ended up being low and I got the Just Dark Enough achievement, so the ending was positive. Really fun game with a good story. Controls were clunky at times, but pretty good overall. A welcome change from that damned Assassin's Creed 3.

More importantly, it looks to be a kind of successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the best computer RPG's ever, and that's not exaggerating. It hasn't aged well, but lets hope this carries the torch for it.

Wasn't sure if it was tied to that or if the name was just a coincidence. I played through Planescape: Torment back in the day and enjoyed it immensely.

Saw an interview with the lead designer (I believe) and he referenced it heavily. They even threw in some clips from the old game. I think he was part of the team who made it way back when, which is really cool. Those guys could tell a hell of a story.

So just like with Wastelands 2. They bring back the original team members. Wonder if these are just the follow-ups they always wanted to do, but could never get the company to sign off on? Now, with Kickstart, they don't need the company, just the fans!

I’m about to put in a new game order and have a question. I'm getting Mass Effect 3 on PC and Arkham City for PS3 for sure. I'm considering adding Spec Ops: The Line to my order, but not sure what system I should get that for. I'm leaning towards PC as i do most of my shooter stuff on there unless it's exclusive, as i can't aim for crap on console controllers, but not sure if this is a straight out shooter where I want that, or if it's something i'd enjoy on console. For example, I can't imagine getting a game like Arkham City or assassin's creed for PC as I think controls for that would suck. I know this is a third person, so just looking for opinions.

Any thoughts?

Spec Ops is just about identical to Uncharted in terms of how the shooting mechanics work. Not sure if that helps or not, but it's not COD or Battlefield.
