Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (3 Viewers)

I am plowing along nicely in my POE character.  I am at level 79 now and working through normal tier 8 and 9 maps.   The character is plenty strong but lacks health.  I need to look more into some defensive flasks to help me out as I have two flask slots sitting almost unused (the other 3 are for healing).
On Xbone or PC?

I just started playing Fortnite. It's in early access and it needs some work but it's kind of fun. The gameplay does get a little slow though.
A little slow?  That's like saying Aaron Hernandez had a little fall from grace. Just wayyy too much rinse and repeat on that one for me. Send me to get a chest. then send me back to do it again, basically. Then, did we forget to tell you there is an "overlooked" chest you missed? Guess where you're going?

Concept solid.  Building and crafting is above average but I can see a lot of people getting tired of it quickly. Needs more original and unique experiences in it.

I had just started playing it. I've since moved on due to the tendentious of it. I agree it a good concept but they have a long ways to go.

POE beta officially closed for Xbox One. Read that full game releases August 24th. There's a pre-release bundle for sale on the Microsoft store:

The ultimate starter pack to begin your journey through Wraeclast Includes 200 points, the First Blood Weapon Effect and an Extra Stash Tab

purchased the FB pack. LOVED this game on PC, hope it translates well to console.

How about a mini review?  You're one of my regular collaborators so I would love to hear your thoughts.

And how does discord work?

Still trying to get on.  Hopefully this weekend.

I like it.  It is much better when you are in a good squad.  The rounds are pretty quick.  You start off in an airplane and have to jump out with 99 other people who want to kill you.  Once you parachute in, you scavenge for weapons, so no one has a built in advantage (i.e. unlocked weapons in BF).  You will notice on the map a large white circle.  You have a few minutes to get what you can, then get inside the circle.  You will start taking damage if you are not within the circle.  This forces all players to the middle, so you can't have a lone loser just sniping from one spot the whole game.  He may not even find a sniper rifle.

The game feels tense to me.  You never know if you can find a weapon or armor (well you'll usually find something, but it may not be your fave), or if another squad is behind a closed door.  Ammo is not plentiful.  You can't really be a bullet sponge (although there are health packs).  You can revive knocked out teammates, but it takes 10 seconds and you are usually exposed while doing so.  There is no way to practice using guns except to play, and because bullets are so rare I have not gotten used to the gunplay.  I have never sucked so bad at a shooter.  We're usually playing the default 3rd person POV.

Discord is a great app, you can download it or use via a browser.  I recommend just downloading the app.  I set up a Discord server for us to use, Bender has one as well.  My address is: https://discord.gg/YqvvVuk

Drop me a line in steam if you want to join!  They have solo, duo, and squad matches.

Well, I played with @Weebs210 tonight.  He is a beast :)

If there are a bunch of people like him running around, I know why I suck.  He had 7 kills our first round, we finished 2nd.  In typical Battlefield fashion, I had 5 revives.

Just finished up Batman Arkham Knight and overall loved both the game and that whole series.  Batmobile while cool, got a little old with the multiple tank battles and the game had some monotonous side quests, ie every time you finish a main quest mission, look they have more towers and bombs I have to go take down.  But overall thought Rocksteady did a great job with building the game series from Asylum, with the Metroid like find new gaget to open new areas, to City with the addition of the openish world and gliding, then to Knight where the world is a little bigger and you can race around in the batmobile.  Combat has always been fun and doable for someone like me who has never been a good button combo fighter and you can get by with mashing on most fights and the deaths are pretty forgivable, most of the time not making you completely start over a tough fight from the beginning, but at whatever stage you were at so it didn't seem to get bogged down in frustration when you hit something you weren't good at.

Honestly for me it's one of the better 3 game series I can think of.

There was also Origins, and I did like that game, but it was really Rocksteady giving WB studios all of their code from City and just using it to create a new story, didn't feel like anything "new" was added into that game.  Wouldn't mind if they did the same with Knight also.

Damned if it's not fun being batman.

I've heard rumors they're doing Superman next.

I kinda think i might be over PUGB, although maybe its just my frustration from playing as a single. (which is basically luck of the draw if you drop in a busy area or a total bore if you try to loot in peace)

Not that it's any surprise or care to most but EA and Bioware made it official. There will be no new Mass Effect single player content indefinitely.

That makes me very sad.

Yeah, it's hard to believe they created that in depth of a game universe to get rid of it so quickly, but the last two iterations have had some pretty major issues that had to be patched because the fans were so angry about them.  It feels like that series has seriously lacked leadership and decision making lately, so maybe a long hiatus and internal re-org before revisiting one of their most popular franchisees is in order.

(side note I haven't played Andromeda yet, i'll probably get to it late this year or early next, but with what I've read I'm pretty confident my statement above holds true.)

Internally everything I've read it was a disorganized nightmare to work under. The game though is pretty damn good to me. It definitely could have been better as they all could have been but I was satisfied playing it. Realistically it probably should have been released this fall to give them time to work out the bugs but again, it was rushed into Q1. EA has managed to destroy this Franchise with piss pour business management skills.

They haven't abandoned the franchise, they are just punting on Andromeda. They brought Casey Hudson back on to run Bioware (the lead on the original trilogy), I'm sure he'll have a new installment in the pipeline eventually.

Got pretty close to the end of Undertale. Fun game but I'm not sure if it's worth finishing. I know what I have to do and it just seems tedious. The gameplay I didn't find that amazing but I the storytelling/writing I've really enjoyed.

It might be a decade or more. EA really ruined this Franchise with their business decisions.

I just got through playing Andromeda and I really enjoyed it.  I went online to read what the initial complaints were that really killed it and they fell into two buckets: 1) political and 2) technical.

As to the first; get over it people. Just because immigration is a hot button political issue in real life doesn't mean a video game is trying to teach you a lesson. If you feel that way maybe you should play video games because these aren't new themes for the genre.

Regarding the technical issues my take away message was; never purchase games until at least after the first major patch is released. There are too many bugs that appear when a game first gets released into the wild and they need time to patch the inevitable issues. I have always been one to wait until the first legit sale, which means that sometimes I have to wait up to a year but it's worth it IMO, I have enough games in my collection to afford me the luxury of patience.

As for Andromeda itself the game play is awesome. The combat if fast paced and, at times, downright frantic in the best way possible (the first time you encounter an Architect is the pinnacle of awesomeness).

Another really high point is character customization. You can switch play styles pretty much at will. About halfway through my first play through I re-specced and went with something entirely different. The insane amount of character customizability is a great way to prevent long, story driven games from becoming monotonous after you figure out the patterns of the enemies.

The main story and loyalty missions (for the most part) are really well done. The loyalty missions, in particular, are places where it feels closest to ME2 & 3 and they provide some of the funniest dialogue (particularly Drack's and Liam's loyalty missions). They also do a nice job relating Andromeda to the ME universe (quick synopsis: some power brokers in the Milky Way recognized the threat from the Reapers before ME1 and launched colonization mission sending five massive ships on a 600 year journey to colonize planets in the Andromeda system).

Some of the downsides are the characters themselves. A lot of them feel two dimensional and they fall flat (Cora, Liam and Vetra IMO although I may be changing my opinion on Liam), although some of that I think comes by comparison to the original series. The bottom line is there will never be another Thane Krios or Mordin Solis those guys were just perfectly done and I don't think you can hope to recapture that in new games. The good thing is that a Krogan is a Krogan is a Krogan, they are all bad ### and funny.

How the story captures you is kind of up to you. If you haven't played I strongly suggest that you DO NOT clear planets the first time you visit one.  There are tons of things to do on all the major planets the main story takes you to. You will be going back and forth often, if you clear the planets right away the next time you revisit you limit your options and it can feel more tedious, so leave yourself some side missions available so you aren't just planet hopping to finish one thing.  This will reduce the number of planet landing/leaving load screens you have to deal with.

Like all games with massive maps there are a bunch of silly step-and-fetch side missions. I think virtually all of these missions are only for players who are loot #####s and obsessive levelers (like me). These are optional, take them as you feel.

Another small issue I have is the decision to make all the characters super attractive. They really tried to make everyone a romantic option for everyone else. It felt forced.

Overall Andromeda is a super fun game with great combat mechanics (I'm a PC player BTW), stunning graphics and a solid story.  I am sorry they pulled the plug because this series had potential.

Agreed with Todem, not needed. There are some references to the prior game in the story of 2, but nothing they don't fill you in on or catch you up on in the very beginning (the 4 characters you can play as in the 1st game show up in the 2nd game's story which is a fun tie to the original.) Anyway, the story isn't really why you are playing the game anyway, its just a lot of damn fun.

For that reason I would recommend playing the first one though, they are both really fun games although 2 is bigger and better in most ways. One thing that may be lost though is that these were some of the best 4 player co-op games I've ever played, game was really designed around co-op really well.

Note: In Borderlands 2, make sure to get the Shotgun 1340 after the quest "Out of Body Experience." It's hilarious.
BL2 is one of my all-time favorite games (played it before BL Andy, no problem at all). So much fun. I wish there were more four player co-op games of this quality, I am surprised there isn't a bigger market for them.

Agreed. Had a great time with a group of friends playing BL2. We've played quite a few coop games together, but most get dull and repetitive after a while. A lot of them take themselves too seriously, but have boring stories with repetitive missions. We're enjoying doing dumb stuff together in Ghost Recon Wildlands, but most of it is ancillary shenanigans outside of the story and missions.

One more thing: The worst thing about Andromeda for me was the Movie Night quest. Just terrible, don't bother.
Yea I finished at 98% then remembered that I had forgotten about that quest. I started it early on when I was playing and then realized a month later I never finished it. I saw the cut scene. Not the same as Citadel DLC.

I think that's what bothered me the most is how they tried to make a Citadel type bonding quest then left out, y'know the quest...and the sense of humor...and the drunk Krogan and Prothean causing problems...and maybe the best boss fight in the series...and every single thing that made Citadel the most awesome DLC ever.  But even lacking all of that it still felt like an obvious LOOK AT US!! WE'EZ A SUPER AWESOME TEAM!!!

It's a stupid step-and-fetch quest with zero payoff, less than zero payoff, Robert Downey Jr. at the end of Less Than Zero payoff.

As some famous ####### is fond of saying "Movie Night is a complete and total disaster!"

ETA: Otherwise it really is a very good game with tight well designed combat, which is really all that matters.

So the vanilla version of Andromeda is now under $30 on Amazon.  Suppose I liked the combat from ME2 and ME3.  Is Andromeda worth playing even if the story and characters aren't that compelling?  And does this one require multiplayer to get a good ending like ME3 did?

Not expecting a ME2-type masterpiece here.  Just something entertaining to hold me over until the good games start coming out again later in the fall.

It's a pretty good option for a summer slump game. If you're still playing by the time one of the games you comes out you willing won't have a problem putting it down.

If you have a PS4, there's a small but good Uncharted that came out too. It think it's $40.

got the kid madden 18 on Tuesday, played a good 3-4 games. Running seems much improved, otherwise pretty much the same game.

Informed my wife that I am getting back into PoE but this time on the Xbone. She asked what's PoE? I said, remember that game I was playing and you asked for how much longer I was going to be ignoring the entire family?

That one was fixed with the major game patch by giving you a default boost to your war readiness stat from the beginning.

Also, what are you playing it on?  For PC Andromeda's on sale for $20 on the EA Origin site, i'll probably be getting that tonight.

I think so - I'm mostly through it, and it's a mediocrely written but very good looking (post-patches at least) open world RPG - basically a poor man's Witcher 3 with ME 3 combat. I've enjoyed playing while I catch up on my podcast backlog.

Yes, absolutely. It was a much better game than it gets credit for.

I just did a somewhat detailed write up on my experience.

The combat is a blast.

I have sunk WAY too much time into 3.0.

If you loved it the first time around you will love it even more now.  There is so much to this game if you want to peel the layers.

I have three main builds going, along with some I have started and not gotten to far with.

Assassin using dual claws and frost blades spell with dual strike for bosses.

Witch using Arc and Lightning Tendrils

Ranger using flame bolt

I picked up PoE again too for 3.0.

Playing a life leeching blade flurry duelist.

I just love the blade flurry skill.  You don't even have to target anything.  Just click the mouse and things all around you die.
