Vikings Stadium Issue (1 Viewer)

A Damper on Viking Stadium Plans

In his quest to build a new Vikings stadium and $1.67 billion Northern Lights retail complex in Blaine, Zygi Wilf may have to tackle an unlikely opponent: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Much of the 740 acres that Wilf wants has been designated as wetlands by the corps, which has refused to approve much of the land for development.

"What the Army Corps of Engineers has done is absolutely appalling," said Margaret Langfeld, chairwoman of the Anoka County Board....

I'm not sure the land of 1000 lakes could handle the loss of 740 acres of wetlands. Probably would turn the state into a desert.

That would be 10,000 lakes (not 1,000).  We can handle missing one or two....but don't tell that to the environmentalists.
Actually, MN has 11,842 lakes when one counts those bodies of water that are 10 acres or larger in size. The DNR notes that a lake may be defined as an enclosed basin filled or partly filled with water. Generally speaking, says the DNR, a lake is an "area of open, relatively deep water that is large enough to produce a wave-swept shore." :hophead: I would imagine that the Core is stubborn because of the long history on midwest farms of draining wetlands. In 2003, Minnesota had 9.3 acres of wetlands, though now we have apparently built it back up to 13.1 million with wetland projects. That sounds like a lot, but remember that back in 1850 there were 18.6 million acres, most of which were drained by farmers (like my father) who were cleaning up their fields with drainage tiles. You really need to do it for farming, but it does shrink the wetland acrage considerably.

Nevertheless, as a Vikings homer, I say let Ziggy build it and then make him replace the lost acrage somewhere else. In other words, if Ziggi builts it... the wetlands will come... later.
