Titans agree to terms with Young; deal could be worth $58 million

By JIM WYATT

The Titans have agreed to terms with quarterback Vince Young on a contract that could be worth $58 million, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

Young, the third overall pick in April's NFL Draft, agreed to a five-year deal with an option year. The overall value of the contract could be worth as much as $58 million, and it includes $25.7 million in guaranteed money. The value of Young's deal exceeds the contract signed by the NFL's No. 1 pick, defensive end Mario Williams.

After more than a week of negotiations, Titans General Manager Floyd Reese and Young's agent Major Adams reached a deal that is similar to the one Williams signed with the Houston Texans.

Williams’ deal is for six years and is valued at $54 million, plus $26.5 million in guaranteed money.

The Titans begin training camp on Friday in Clarksville at Austin Peay State University, and Young is expected to be on the field.

Coaches raved about Young's progress during offseason minicamps as he began to grasp the offense, though Coach Jeff Fisher and offensive coordinator Norm Chow have both said Young still needs plenty of work.

During training camp, Young is expected to take roughly 45 percent of the snaps while working behind starter Billy Volek.

At Texas, Young threw for 6,040 yards and 44 touchdowns during his career while also rushing for 3,127 yards and 37 touchdowns.

In his final college game, against Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl, he produced 467 yards of total offense to lead the Longhorns to the national championship.

First of all:  Im not about to nail down any sort of comparison between Young and Mario but IMHO, this sort of action (giving in to his demands) only sets the precedent for the younger generations to try and lobby for more money and we could see more frequent and longer holdouts over even larger sums of money.

By allowing vince to get his money, IMHO, the orginazation has taken a step back. We could see the Noel Devine's of the future lobby for money that Reggie Bush would have taken in a heartbeat; and that is a scary thought.

But i do understand they want him in camp; tough position to say the least.

The deal does not surpass Williams. The $58 million figure is what the contract may be worth if all incentives and bonuses are reached. Williams $54M figure is his base salary and it can be worth up to $62M.This is typical of agents. They release info which makes the deal look better then it is, but when the smoke clears and the press are tired of reporting it, the real deal comes to light.

Like last year when Ty Law signed some astronomical contract, when the dust cleared it was essentially a one year contract for $5M IIRC.
