The Panthers drafted three players from Va Tech. Any Hokies fans that can share some insight into these three guys?

Good comments, Wannabee.

I've seen quite a few Hokie games over the years, and Humes looks like a solid 2nd day steal.

Virginia Tech Overall Individual Statistics

(as of Jan 03, 2006) All games

RUSHING GP-GS Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/GCedric Humes 12-9 162 783 31 752 4.6 11 41 62.7Powerful runner between the tackles. I like the destinations you suggest for him.Again, this leads to my theory of the "crowded backfields" and RBBC all over the place in 2006.

Not to hijack, but I think Va Tech's biggest offensive prospect that is getting barely mentioned is TE Jeff King.

Code:
RECEIVING GP-GS No. Yards Avg TD Long Avg/G Jeff King 13-13 26 292 11.2 6 28 22.5
Solid hands in the red zone (most TD receptions of any Hokie in '05) and ability to get open on third down and down the seam. Solid player.

This is what Jeff P wrote about Jeff King. Just did some research on King because Jeff has him ranked number 20 for dynasty TE's:

Jeff King - Round 5, TE, CAR - Another Hokie I like. Six TDs for Va Tech - leading TD receiver for them - and a strong TE. Can play on every down - good blocker. Great situation for him in Carolina with only Mangum to beat out. He could be the next Wesley Walls.

Pros: King is an agile prospect who is a two-sport athlete, having also played on the basketball team. He shows sure, soft hands as a receiver with the quick release in the underneath patterns to be a valuable weapon. He has fine body control to adjust to the ball. He uses his good leaping ability and understanding of coverage to get into the deep seam and make big plays. He is especially dangerous in the shorter routes where his agility and body control allow him to create matchup problems and win jump balls. As a blocker, he gets good movement, using fine technique and functional strength.

Cons: Wasn’t fully utilized as a receiver in Virginia Tech offense. Has shown some power, but lacks speed to be a threat down the field or to make defenders miss after the catch.

Numbers: King scored 12 touchdowns on only 58 career receptions. In the ’05 season, he caught 26 passes for 292 yards and six touchdowns. As a junior, he caught 25 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns. At the combine, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.83 seconds with a 32½” vertical jump and a 9’1” broad jump. He did 21 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

I'll add that I was at about 4-5 Va Tech games over the course of King's career in person in addition to watching him on TV. He was always on the field for the offense it seems, but most definitely on passing downs. He has the hands and ability to play on the next level. He's made some outstanding plays over his career and has a nose for the end zone.

I see King being a really really productive TE in the NFL. Humes can also show what he's got if given the chance. Jeff King also played basketball for a season at Virginia Tech, very atheltic guy.

Recently received a lot of praise during rookie camp. Projected to be a SLB for the Panthers, but, with the siginings of Keith Adams and Na'il Diggs, he'll most likely just be solid depth for a season or two. Came to Tech a little small for a LB (218 lbs) but worked his butt off in the gym to come out of Tech with an extra 20lbs of muscle. Moved to outside (whip) LB last season and saw a lot of coverage responsibilities. Has good potential to be a solid SLB down the line.
Rd 5 (155) TE Jeff King 6-4, 253, age 23
Some good posts above re: King (nice large target, good hands, good blocking). I'll just add, he probably saw more passes last year than any Tech TE in the Beamer era (at least that I can recall off hand). Holds school record for receiving TDs by a TE. Was 2nd team All-ACC TE (behind Vernon Davis). Blocked 3 kicks in his career on Beamer's famed special teams. Saw significant playing time (meaning he was a "sixth man" type rather than a bench warmer) on the VT basketball team after the '04 football season.
Rd 7 (234) C Will Montgomery 6-3, 312, age 23
Played both C and G at Tech (moved to C when Jake Grove left and did well filling some big shoes). Should provide very excellent depth for both positions. Started Tech as a walk on DT but was almost immediately moved to OG and earned himself a scholarship. Set a number of positional weight lifting records at Tech.

King's also in a good situation. Only Mangum to beat out.

Mangum last year: 23/202/2

Gaines: 12/155/2

Even if he takes over there and JUST equals that, that's 35/357/4. Not bad for a late sleeper.

I'm not saying he gets 100% of that OR that he's going to be the #1 guy come September, but he's worth watching.

Hmmm.....any other ex-hoops guys ever make it big in the NFL as TE's? :excited:

As impressive as that sounds nowadays I wouldn't put King anywhere near Gonzalez or Gates, athletically. King is a pretty good athlete, but his speed/quickness will be far from his greatest asset in the NFL. I think he's really going to have to rely more on his hands/size/body control (which are fairly impressive in their own right) to succeed as a receiver.I mean, come on. How athletic could he really be if he couldn't crack the Hokies starting basketball lineup. :P

By no means do I say he's the next Gates or Gonzo. However, Zach Hilton also played basketball.....

Last I read the Panthers really liked James Anderson. This caught my attention: Fox compared him to Witherspoon when he was coming out.

Thomas Davis is going to man the strong side. The article said Anderson would get an opportunity to compete for the WLB starting spot. Not any world beaters for him to contend with either. Definitely something to keep an eye on for IDPer's.

Sorry. I wasn't taking it that way, and I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth.I could only find info. on Hilton playing HS BB but FWIW, I'd rather have Hilton stashed on my roster than King.

Sorry, I misread / mis-remembered this article.Zach Hilton

It mentions him being "more like a BBall player", never said he was.

My bad. :bag:

(P.S. I still like Hilton  )
