Walking a hundred holes of golf for charity -- Advice to not die? (1 Viewer)

Halfway done. 3 full rounds in 6 1/2 hours. 18.5 miles so far. And, just shot the last 9 at 1 over, easily my best score ever. Feet and back a little sore but still feeling pretty good.
The second half is going to be infinitely harder than the first half. Stay alive, my friend.

Just finished.... Update later
You're my hero.  A week ago I played 36 in 5 hours....WITH A CART.   When I was 18, I sometimes I played 54 with 3 caddies at my dad's old country club.  We played in about 8-8.5 hours.  Couldn't imagine playing 6 rounds in a day.

Hopefully you're taking the next day off, because your back is going to be very sore....take some Advil.

We finished at 9pm. Sun had just set, so last hole we by moonlight. 109 holes. 16 hours. 36 miles. Actually feel ok. That cramping was after taking a 15 minute break which wasn't good but actually feel ok right now.

Was an awesome experience especially with it helping others. I'll try to post more about it tomorrow in detail about how it went, the golf, etc.

At this time of year in mn you could tee off at 5 am and finish around 9:15 pm.
That's exactly what happened... Finished at 9 exactly, though, after teeing off at 5am. Unfortunately the course started letting people play on our 9 and it slowed us down even though they were supposed to know to let us play through. Our fastest pace was the last hour to get it done. We were at a one hour per 9 pace pretty comfortably for most of the day.

giancomarica i salute you for doing this to help others you are on the onramp to the path of the brohan and we welcome you on your journeys good on you for doing good for others take that to the bank fellow brotraveler

Hoping last 5 holes didnt take 3 hours
Ha, no.  We were doing 108 holes (and actually did 109), so it was still another round to go when I posted about 95.

no hole in one?
Nope.  Guy I played with missed one by a few inches.  While he used to be a golf pro so he's understandably a good golfer, dude finished 3 under for the day.  And even more impressive, he used the same ball for every single hole!

So, that was truly an awesome experience.  Crazy enough, I was still enjoying the golf aspect of it throughout the entire day.  It really wasn't until the final 9 that I was just swinging to get it done and that was mostly because we had to finish before we ran out of light.  Unfortunately, the golf course wasn't supposed to have anyone else on the course but they started sending people out in the afternoon and then these league guys came on and it REALLY slowed us down.  We had priority to just keep hitting through, but for some stupid reason not all of the people on the course knew so we kept having to explain what was going on.  We were on a little over an hour pace per 9 holes for a while until the mid afternoon.  As there were 4 of us, we started off doing this as 2 pairs but at that point we joined up to play as a 4some to minimize the play through, however, that obviously slowed us down as well.  Amazingly, our fastest pace of the day was the final 9 when we got it done in about 40 minutes.  We were actually running on some of the holes.

We were able to use a push cart (although 1 of the 4 guys actually carried the whole time), which clearly helped.  So, I had a few more clubs than I had expected to bring.  Had my driver, 3 wood, 4i, 7i, 9i, and SW.  We had parked some coolers at hole #1 so we would grab little bites as we kept playing.  No real breaks except for about 20 minutes around 3pm when all these other players got on there and we were trying to figure out what was going on and how to fix it.  That was easily the worst part as that's when I started cramping.  By the end, when we were moving the whole time and at a better pace, I actually felt good again.  The worst part was top of the calves behind the knees and back, for sure.  Feet were tired.  Arms felt good.

Surprisingly, I just played golf as I otherwise would have if I wasn't doing all those holes.  I wasn't just bunting the balls but instead was picking each club as I otherwise would and swinging 100% the entire day.  As we played the same nine holes 12 times throughout the day, it was funny to me how I consistently missed shots or played holes the same way almost every time even if I tried to change things up.  There was a par 5 hole that I missed my drive almost every time and then would hit a really good 2nd shot to get me within 100-150 and then I stuck 4 of those approach shots within 10 ft of the cup.  I had 4 birdie opportunities on that one hole alone even though I only made 1.  And this was the 2nd hardest hole of the 9.  I didn't really come close on any others except for a par 3 where I had a couple.

My scores for the day, in order:  42, 40, 43, 47, 45, 37, 42, 43, 42, 45, 46, 45.

Those last 3 trips through were the most challenging for me golf-wise as I was definitely over-swinging to combat fatigue at that point.  When I'd think about it and try to swing easier, things would get better, but I'd forget too many times.  I also calculated what my score would be with the best score from each hole and it would have been a 34.  Which is what makes that 37 for me that much more impressive.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice and shtick here.  It was pretty cool and appreciate those of you from here who followed along.  Oh, and some idiot set the record for this thing recently with 181 holes in a day.  I have no idea how.

Are you sore?
Surprisingly not as sore as I thought I'd be.  Just sitting here and even walking around I feel just fine.  Going up the stairs this morning and bending over to pick stuff up is when I feel it and even that isn't that bad.  Bending over to pick up balls at the end of the day was getting tough, though, yesterday.

The cool thing was we had people that would come out and help yesterday.  They had carts and would help us find balls, move our bag around to the next hole a few times, fix divots, etc. Probably had that for half the holes.  Especially for the last 3 it was a life saver.

I like what you are doing here, but bad luck on timing.

This made me go look as I never venture in to that thread.  Holy cow, that's utterly amazing.  I just took a little stroll compared to that.

Don't sell yourself short. You walked 36 miles of terrain that probably had some uphills and downhill, all while swinging a metal stick 517 times. That's pretty damn impressive.

So how did this workout as people played slower? Did you just just play when ready and play thru whenever you wanted?  I would get pretty tired of waiting on people I would think.   Were you in a group?   What happened if they played slower than you wanted?

We had priority to play.  So, people playing a hole were supposed to look back and if they saw us, just stop and let us play.  That happened some of the time, but as there were players out there that weren't told by the clubhouse what was going on, we had to wait a little until we could explain what was happening.  A couple times the guys in the golf carts helping us would drive up to tell them.  With the exception of a couple people that were clearly annoyed that we were interfering with their league, everyone was cool with it once they found out what we were doing.

Oh so it wasn't like a whole course full of people doing this.

11 yr old did 90 holes

Story on the news yesterday about an 11 year old that did 90 holes to raise money for the first tee program.  I think he cheated and used a cart though.

Great job on surviving.  Soreness might not set in until tonight or tomorrow.

BTW, when we went for beers in the clubhouse and sat down for the first time.... bliss.  And they were nice enough to comp us beers.

I also realized that was the first time I had peed all day since waking up.  Throughout the day I drank 8 bottles of water plus a whole cooler of water, an entire bottle of Simply lemonade, ate 6-8 bananas and about 12 little turkey sliders (Hawaiian rolls, turkey, mayo).  After about noon, I wasn't really hungry the rest of the day but still tried to eat the above intermittently because I knew I should.

Again, we were so lucky that it wasn't hot or that amount I drank would have easily doubled. I'm still not terribly hungry today which isn't how I usually am but otherwise back to normal. Down about 4 pounds from yesterday, too.

ETA -- At the base of the tree at hole 1 where we had our coolers, there was a pile of banana peels by the end of the day. People that were coming by must have thought there was a pack of monkeys living in that tree.
