Week 2 waiver wire (1 Viewer)

People seem to be missing the fact that Asiata got more work last time Peterson was unavailable and Asiata and McKinnon were the options.  Then in the game against the Packers just this week, post Peterson injury we saw Asiata get 6 carries for the game to McKinnon's 2.  As for receptions, Asiata had 1, and McKinnon had 1.

I know McKinnon is a freak athlete, and I know a lot of people thought he was super underrated in rookie drafts a few years ago, and he was... but if I'm looking for a guy to give me production for this year while Peterson is out, I think that's Asiata.  More likely to get goal line work, maybe more likely to get carries period, and will be in there in passing situations because they trust him most in pass pro.

What am I missing?

McKinnon's developed.  The team has been ranting about how good McKinnon has looked this year and some people wondered if he could eat more into AP's carries.  Not that it would be an RBBC mind you.

It's also tough to read into so few carries. The expectation is that McKinnon is the lead back but gives way on goal line carries. 

 
I lost Peterson & Woodhead but have a deep bench & all of my FAAB available.  How hard (% of FAAB) would you go after the following in a ppr league:

McCluster

Dwayne Washington

Asiata

I'm thinking of going hard (40% each) after the first two guys as they'll more likely have season-long value compared to Asiata if the reports on AP coming back soon are to be believed.  

 
I don't know if I'm a buyer of McCluster.  Could be foolish but I think I'm going to let other owners spend their money on him.  Anyone want to talk me out of it?

It's hard for me to get exited about McCluster.  I know there is the Whiz connection, but even when he was younger and was being used he wasn't that productive.  I was really hoping the Chargers would of gone after Hillman.

Supposedly he's a blockhead who can't learn play books. Considering we're going in to week three, and he (allegedly) couldn't learn the Saints play book in two seasons, I can't imagine many teams are chomping at the bit to sign him.

 
McCluster seems like the best fit to step right into that Woodhead role.  Obvioulsly not as good as Woodhead but could be valuable in ppr leagues.

Maybe... guess we'll see.  If he's developed so much, shouldn't he have been on the field more this past week when AP went down?  Wouldn't that be the time to turn to him?  Instead they split snaps down the middle and Asiata got 7 touches to McKinnon's 3.

 
My claims, as of now (still may tinker). 

  1. Washington
  2. Asiata
  3. Miami D
  4. Tampa D
16-team, start 3 WRs, standard scoring. Woodhead was my only backup RB, so while I don't need someone who can start right away, I will need bye-week fill-ins soon.

The main reason I see Washington as the top claim is because whenever I hear "sprained foot", I assume the guy is going to be out for longer than the team is saying. I still remember the time MJD was "week to week" with a foot sprain and ended up missing like the last 10 games of the season. Same with Ronnie Hillman a couple years ago.

Also, he seems to have the clearest path to a defined role (even if it is on a pretty crappy running game). Yes, he's not a three-downer, but who is these days?

If McKinnon were out there, he would be a no-doubt top pick, for most of the same reasons I outlined above. I'm staying away from the Carolina running game because I doubt I'll need to start any of them before Stewart comes back.

I think Minnesota was doing something specific there. And if you look at snap %, it was equal Week 2 (21% each) and was 25-14% in McKinnon's favor Week 1.

It should've been in McKinnon's favor week 1, and in theory, if he's the true backup to Peterson, it should've been in his favor again. 

I don't know what specific thing you're referring to.  I watched the game... Asiata was getting work and McKinnon wasn't.  McKinnon had 25% in week 1 and 21% in week 2, which seems like the percentage of a COP/complementary player.  That Week 2 % should've spiked after Peterson's injury, and instead we see McKinnon at roughly the same snap percentage and Asiata have his snaps spike post AP injury. 

I think that's something we ignore at our own peril...

Agreed - Familiarity with Whiz is all I can think of in the positive column for McCluster.  Woodhead's a different and much better player.  I'm not sure what's up with Hillman right now - figured he would've been signed by this point... guess not.

 
On the Hillman being unemployed front, I think it's worth a look in deeper leagues to see if Josh Ferguson is on your waiver wire.  He's kind of a forgotten man after rotoworld spent most of the preseason trashing the guy.  I've seen him cut in a lot of leagues, actually.  While Indianapolis was trying to get anything going on Sunday at Denver, Ferguson's workload was increasing and his snap % was increasing.  He played 27 snaps to Frank Gore's 34 --> 37% to Gore's 47%. 

He saw 5 targets and caught all of them (albeit for only 29 yards -- did come against a great defense, so idk what to make of it), and two carries. 

Point being, they clearly like the kid and he's now shown up with a bigger role and didn't embarrass himself or get Luck killed.  If Gore got hurt, maybe Ferguson doesn't get everything, but I think he'd have a bigger role in a really powerful offense.

To be fair, I watched him in the preseason and he looked overmatched.  It's nice to see that he is getting work already and agree with you on him.   I think he should be on watch lists in redraft and certainly be rostered in dynasty.

I am curious how much % FAAB people are putting on Washington. I think I could possibly get him for nothing unless news comes out today regarding Abdullah. If he's out the season or a large chunk I honestly feel like he could be WW material and Washington would immediately go into 50% FAAB status. As it stands now I'm considering lowering my 10% to a 0% bid and seeing if I can get him for free, or even 1%... 

 
I have the #1 WW priority this week and I lost AP... but can't decide whether to pickup McKinnon or Asiata. 

Am I overthinking it?

Is it McKinnon cut-and-clear?

I think you have to look at how McKinnon and Asiata were used in prior seasons and go from there. Asiata will get goal line work, McKinnon will get the rushing stats and receptions. It all depends on your scoring settings.

My guess is McKinnon on third downs between the 20's. Assiata 1st and 2nd down and goal line.  But we all know that AP is not human and I would not be shocked if he suited up very soon.

Usually code for he is having something a little extra to help him heal faster. I'm not so naive to believe this doesn't happen across the league, but as a health care provider that specializes in injuries and healing time, this is usually not possible without the help of something extra.

Except that it's a tiny piece of evidence.  There may be reasons at that point that Minnesota wanted Asiata in. I'm not going to rewatch the game, but speculating Asiata is a better short-yardage back. Being up and wanting to milk the clock he's a guy to run behind. 

All the evidence to date has been that McKinnon is the backup and the team really likes his development. Getting out-touched 6-3 is evidence in the other direction but it's so small, you're looking at 18 minutes of play.  That's nothing. 

Asiata certainly could be a value pickup (depending on your waivers). But my money's heavily on McKinnon being the no. 1 RB now.

Good to know, but IMO I think this has more to do with the injury to our return man Hyde last game. McCarthy was just quoted saying Starks and Lacy need the ball more. However, I think it was last year that practice squad guy got a bunch of looks because Lacy and Starks were playing so bad. I'm not sure where that was it was an away game, maybe DET.

Not sure if Hyde is significantly hurt (he's questionable) but Spiller would be a great asset to the return game for GB- can't be that hard to learn the special teams playbook

I'd say it had more to do with the score of the game and they just wanted ball and clock control and not offense at that point in the game.  In 2014 I think Asiata's playing time had a lot to do with McKinnon being a rookie who was just learning the position since he played QB in college, it was only at the very tail end of the season that McKinnon started getting more playing time.  I view the situation as a kind of poor mans Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill tandem backfield.  Without Peterson teams will play them different than the first two games and that should bode well for McKinnon in PPR.

I'm not pounding the table for Asiata... he's not much of an athlete by NFL standards and I don't think he's going to be terribly impressive if they gave him the work.  But they clearly trust him.  Do they trust McKinnon?  I honestly don't know.

My understanding is that it's not really a binary thing of "LF = bad/non-LF = he'll be back in a week or two". I mean, obviously if there's a fracture, it could be a season-ender. But the more likely scenario is that they'll say it's a "sprain" (which could mean a lot of things) and we won't really know anything until the point where he either comes back or gets shut down.

All of which is to say we probably won't know any more by the end of the day than we did beforehand. Or maybe we will.

Patience is not one of my virtues. Sitting at waiver priority #4 and despite wanting Enunwa, still waiting for a season-winner to be out there on WW. When oh when will it be... I'm not sold on anybody thus far. It seems that in years past there was a guy or 2 after week 1 or 2. Just foggy memory or are we behind in the WW breakthrough player this year?

You may be right. A fracture is unlikely given that would have appeared on an xray unless his foot was severely swollen. If they are seeing a foot specialist I would assume this likely means they are worried about soft tissue damage and a lis franc. There are not many other things you'd see a specialist for to be honest. But you are likely right that we won't know anything for a very long time. 

I forget who the RB was who had a "sprained foot" and was touch and go for weeks a while ago. I believe it was revealed later that he had a lis franc. Was that Charles? Probably a similar issue here. We won't know anything and they will keep it hushed unless he is going to be shut down for an extended time period

Maybe you're just not seeing it? Tyrell Williams could be a top 20 WR in that offense. Pitta could easily be a top 8 TE. I think the RBs will come

I honestly think you can get him on the cheap because of the situation. If he were the next man up in an offense that ran the ball more/didn't have as many heads in the backfield people would probably be blowing a substantial amount on him. Because it's DET and Riddick is still alive I can see a lot of people being turned off in general (and honestly, for good reason). He's still not a lock to be a legitimate fantasy contributor even if Abdullah is out for an extended amount of time. That all being said, I will still be targeting him.

As someone who road Asiata for that stint in 2014, I watched him pretty closely.. he looked more svelte and nimble to me in relief of AP last week. My buddy texted me saying "Is that Asiata?".

But, still, he has the athletic profile of a FB. I think he'll probably split passing down work with McKinnon and get all the GL work. In between the 20s there still isn't much upside to running him.

I'm kind of torn on McKinnon. We know he's an athletic freak, we've heard it ad nausuem. My question is, is he a good running back? I've watched a lot of his touches and I honestly don't know. All I know is that he can take it to the house on any given touch.

I have the #1 WW and Mckinnon isn't available. The best RBs are Crowell and Fozzy, best WRs are Corey Coleman and Wallace. I buy in to Wallace but nobody else on this list (Coleman because his QB situation is garbage.

That said, I don't feel that any of these 4 are worth me blowing the #1 claim :/

Take wallace. He has that joey galloway in tampa feel right now. Could be very startable all year

I don't lose the #1 if I don't use it but I am just a little tempted. Wallace has a cushy schedule. I'm just kicking myself for having to make this choice because I was an inch away from picking him up and starting him last week.

I honestly don't know if he would be. I want to wait for that CJ Anderson of 2 years ago or Deangelo last year to come in off an injury and just light the world on fire. I don't know if any of the currently unrostered back-ups have that skill and that opportunity. McKinnon probably won't get the goal line looks so I don't know if he's the real deal in my book.

Travis Benjamin looked pretty good last week. Tyrell didn't seem to get much action. I'll have to look into him more.

I agree that Pitta looks good, but my league is a 12 team 2 TE league so TEs like Pitta aren't available.

As for the RBs, there isn't much there. CAP was actually rostered prior to the Stewart injury. I don't like MIN's inability to run, or the situation of figuring out who is going to be the guy for AP. I heard this am (I haven't caught up on news yet) that AP wasn't even ruled out for this weekend yet, despite the injury.

I don't know about top 20. Williams' stat line would have looked terrible had he not had his long TD. I hate to be that guy that says "well if you take away that one long run..." but he did not get as many looks as Benjamin. I agree that he has potential and size to be great, I own him. I hope he's top 20. He reminds me, oddly enough, of Benjamin from last year. Probably a great bye week fill in and some good trade bait to the right team. I am not sure he warrants every week WR 2 status just yet. I did start him over DT as my WR3 last week and was fairly okay with the swap... but I won't be benching DT again as long as he's healthy.
