I'm not typically fond of carrying 2 WRs from the same team, but in this case, it might be warranted. I'm just curious what fellow Welker owners are doing w/ regards to Julian Edelman...

ETA: Also would appreciate any opinions regarding "handcuffing" WRs in general...

I do not own Welker but I would understand cuffing this guy to Welker. I picked him up in 3 leagues tonite just incase Welker can't go. The only problem is we don't know the true exstint of his Welker's injury.

My concern is the lack of info flowing out of NE. I'd be worried about starting Edelman in my lineup to cover Welker, who then gets the last minute start, or vice versa. Having both could just add to the headache. But yes, I'm considering picking him up if Welker is out longer term.

pats play at 1pm. pick him up, if you hear at 12:30pm that welker is active, drop edelman for your kicker for the week. if welker is out, then use edelman. seems like a plan to me. granted some peoples FA lists close before 1pm sunday.

you realize that the Patriots announce their 45 man active roster 45-90 min before the game right? If Welker isn't going to play, he would likely be 1 of 8 players listed on the inactive list so it isn't as bad of headache as you think.I don't own Welker, but added him in 1 redraft. If Welker is inactive, Edelman becomes a top 20 WR in PPR. Worth a roster spot for that IMO.

What's the long term opinion of this guy? I know it's one game but do scouts think he's going to become a constant with this team in a few years. Aka what are his dynasty prospects?

In another Welker thread, DY made a comparison that makes me uncomfortable as a Welker owner--comparing him a bit to Harrison the year he had knee issues. To be clear, DY stated that as a worst-case type concern, not that he thought this was the case. In any event, Welker owners need to seriously consider expending a roster spot on Edelman, of course, depends on the rest of your roster & starting requirements. In me league, we start 3 WRs, so I'm relatively certain every week I want to start the NE WR who plays the Welker role....whether it actually is Welker or Edelman. Oh well, this is the life of fantasy football

I don’t own Welker in my dynasty league but am facing the Welker owner this week. I am considering picking up Edelman in order to prevent the Welker owner from grabbing him and starting him vs. me this week, should Welker be held out.

I think it makes sense for Welker owners in dynasty to strongly look at this guy. In redraft leagues, I think I’d only consider him if I was really thin at WR.

Yep, I own Welker in a redraft league & went through that exact thought process. LOL, I'm just trying to determine whether I am "thin" at WR or not...whether I am comfortable starting late Rd/waiver wire fodder off crappy pass teams instead of Edelman.

Just really depends upon 2 things, imho: 1) Who you'd have to drop in order to sign Edelman -and- 2) Who would you have to start if Welker is out and you do not sign Edelman. If you are ok with losing the person you'd have to drop in order to gain what is likely 1 week of security, and you think your other WR options this week aren't nearly as solid as Edelman may be, then I think it makes sense to grab him in redraft.

I used to think handcuffs were money, not so much anymore. I have seen very few people successfully pull off a handcuff and keep rolling without missing a beat. On the other hand I have seen many flounder as the starter is questionable and is supposed to start but winds up not playing, splitting time, or simply doesn't finish the game. In those cases even if you knew who to start you are still screwed. Handcuffing by definition means when your stud is questionable it automatically makes your handcuff questionable as well. You have no safe option and basically have to plug one in and hope.

Especially in this situation with Welker I can't imagine wanting his backup on my bench. I'm a conservative guy and benched Welker week #1 because he was questionable and missed preaseason time. He performed very well and his status never changed the following week so I plugged him in for week #2. Even if I had Edelman on my roster I would have still plugged Welker because there was no warning that he wouldn't play*. There are many things in life I need, having Belichick screw me every week because he loves to play mind games is not one of them. The way Belichick guards information Welker may play the next 14 games or may never play again in 2009. Bad enough being held hostage by one player, no way I want to deal with two.

* I leave for church around 9:30 am Sundays and ususally don't get back until 12:30. My league locks all lineups at 12:00, even the late game. Unless I have news before 9:30 I'm pretty well shafted.

Yeah, the Belichick factor is giving me some pause...might not want the headache. Hell, right now I'm thinking of just not using Welker at all unless it's reported he has practiced in full during the week. I should've learned my lesson (was aware Welker was gimpy when I drafted) since I owned Deion Branch the year he was in & out all year for the Pats

I don't own Welker but added Edelman in my last roster spot yesterday on spec. I will sit on him until 12:40PM Sunday at which point he either starts in my flex or gets dropped. He was two yds shy of 21 pts in my scoring system last week and that's a fairly enticing lottery ticket - even if its shelf life is only a week.

Welker owner and picked up Edelman (dropped B. Scott). Until I see Welker play 3 straight games, I will hold Edelman on my roster. I, like everyone else, have no clue what is up with Welker's injury and his back-up has good/great value.

I'm definitely thinking about it, 16 targets and 8 catches is hard to overlook...but being limited to 7 moves all year and now Edelmen is hobbling is making me think twice.

Jsut spent 25% of my waiver $ on Ed; had to with my team - can't afford another loss and/or a week w/o my #2 wr...

not optimal, but in my case HAD to be done (ppr)

Tried to, got waiver prioritied in both. Hoping he gets dropped soon, after Welker returns healthy, so I can properly do it. Both of these leagues are very deep though, in more shallow leagues I wouldn't worry about him.

zamboni, sorry no link. the CBS info on Edelman is a biography of Welker. however, i do own Edelman, and there is a RED CROSS with the info i listed right next to it. so now both Edelman and Welker are questionable, as is the Patriots injury reporting (but that's in another thread).

No problem - thanks.I did find this blurb:

Wide receiver Wes Welker and linebacker Jerod Mayo, both of whom are nursing knee injuries, did not practice Wednesday.

Baker (ankle), center Dan Connolly (back), wide receiver Julian Edelman (ankle), safety Brandon Meriweather (ankle), defensive lineman Myron Pryor (calf), wide receiver Matthew Slater (elbow) and cornerback Terrence Wheatley (knee) were limited.
http://www.patriotledger.com/sports/x18065...-in-New-EnglandDefinitely makes me reticent to handcuff Edelman to Welker and have two questionable guys at the same WR slot. I guess we have to see how the practice situation plays out today.

thanks for the info zamboni, and nice flying floyd pig.

i'm about ready to snap between the welker/edelman/patriots stuff and the bell/bush/thomas/hamilton/saints stuff. not to mention gonzalez on the bench, barber's quad....

tired of injuries, but surely not as much as the players....

maybe zamboni's pig will fly and BB and the Patriots will come clean b4 12:00 Sunday....

rotoworld reports welker back at practice, though limited

Wes Welker (knee) returned to practice Thursday, but looked limited.

Huge news for the Patriots offense. Welker reportedly didn't take any reps on Wednesday and was a late scratch in Week 2. He'll probably still be a game-time decision this week, but has said he "expects" to face the Falcons. Julian Edelman's time in the spotlight sounds like it's over for now. Sep. 24 - 1:29 pm et

So thus far, ~61% of Welker owners have either already picked up Edelman or plan to. I winded up not putting in a bid for him, and he's still available. Given his lack of production in week 3, I'm guessing he'll be getting dropped back to the free agent pool with BYE weeks coming up.
