FOXBOROUGH - The Atlanta Falcons are bringing plenty to Gillette Stadium today - a 2-0 record, a standout quarterback, a stable running attack, and a game-changing tight end.

Throughout the week, the Patriots were asked if today’s game will be their toughest yet. The answer may be yes, but for different reasons than those listed above.

The Patriots’ top two receivers could be on the sidelines.

On Friday, the Patriots listed Randy Moss (back) and Wes Welker (knee) as questionable. Welker wasn’t a surprise. He has been hampered by the knee injury and was a late scratch against the Jets. Again, Welker likely will be a game-time decision, according to coach Bill Belichick.

Moss, however, did not show up on the injury report until Friday, after Belichick’s final news conference of the week.

Belichick said backup plans are always in place, but those plans can be shaken up if another player is injured.

“Somebody takes reps at those positions during the course of the week,’’ Belichick said. “Now, if you lose two guys at the same position, I don’t care what position it’s at, now you’re probably talking about some adjustments.

“You lose two centers, you lose two corners, you lose two linebackers, you lose two of anything, then that - I would say 90 percent of the time - would be a pretty good scramble.

“To lose one guy at any position, you’ve got to be prepared for that. Unfortunately, that’s football.’’

Without Welker last week, the Patriots slipped rookie Julian Edelman into the lineup. He pulled down eight receptions for 98 yards, while veteran Joey Galloway added five catches for 53 yards. Brady targeted the duo a combined 28 times, as overall he completed 23 of 47 passes, four of which found Moss.

But not a single pass led to a touchdown, and the offense was stumped in a 16-9 loss to the Jets.

With a limited number of receivers today, the Patriots may look to special teams captain Sam Aiken, who made two starts at wide receiver last season and caught eight passes for 101 yards, the second-most in his seven-year career.

Earlier in the week, director of player personnel Nick Caserio said the team does not feel limited at receiver and considers Aiken an option.

Aiken routinely takes reps at receiver during practice and would be ready if needed, Caserio said.

“If there’s an opportunity for us to put him in the game, or if we feel we need to put him in the game for a handful of plays - or however many plays it might be - we have the utmost confidence in Sam and what he’s able to do offensively,’’ he said.

Per John Czarnecki of Fox Sports, Wes Welker won't play on Sunday against Atlanta.

Don't go jumping to pull Welker out of your fantasy lineup just yet, as reports earlier this week had said that he would try and play. We'll have to wait and see if Welker will give it a go when it gets closer to game time. Julian Edelman would likely fill in for him if he can't play on his gimpy knee.

confirming this, same for Moss (and posted in that thread).

According to ESPNBoston's Mike Reiss, Moss and Welkers status for today's game will come down 90 minutes prior to kickoff. So, about an hour from now.

that's not rocket science, that is when teams have to submit the 45 man active rosters
Sorry some of us are not as geeked up as you on the NFL roster rule book and roster submission requirements prior to kick off. This is an informational thread. Relax genuis. :hifive:

Mark Clayton just reported that Wes Welker has not come out to field yet. He said this on his sportscenter report at 10:56 AM

John Clayton (ESPN Sportscenter) reported that he doubts Welker will play, though he is technically a game time decision. But, Clayton said that with the weather, he tends to doubt he'll play.

NE - WR Welker "good chance" to be OUT per ESPN's John Clayton

Summary: It's not official yet, but ESPN's John Clayton is reporting this morning that Patriot WR Wes Welker has a "good chance to miss" today's game. He'll be a game time decision but right this minute, it's not looking good.

what's the big deal who is right or wrong...just wait to see the inactive list and plan accordingly. Why does it matter if we know now or 1/2 hour before the game?

Quiet start

Not a whole lot of noteworthy activity on the field before the game besides Darius Butler's warm-up in front of trainers.

Julian Edelman and Kevin Faulk made appearances to catch kicks as punter Chris Hanson warmed up. Brian Hoyer stretched out his arm by relaying those kicks back to Stephen Gostkowski (who served as "snapper" for Hanson).

Hoyer also spent some time chatting with Atlanta quarterback and Boston College product Matt Ryan near midfield.

Other Patriots spotted on the field for early warm-ups: Benjamin Watson, Jonathan Wilhite, and Leigh Bodden. Joey Galloway just came out to get loose as well.

Maybe most noteworthy was the absence of receivers Wes Welker and Randy Moss so far. Inactives should be announced shortly.

Falcons kicker Jason Elam is on the field in full uniform. Falcons will wear their typical road white jerseys with white pants. Presumably, the Patriot will have their blue tops with gray pants like last week.

In some cases,. people don't have the luxury of spending the afternoon at home in front of teh computer/TV. Youth sports, etc. might force you to make your final lineup adjustments earlier than you'd like.

I hope we can get more word about Welker's injury this week. Would love to know if Edelman is more than a weekly sleeper. And I'd like to know if I should cut bait on Welker. Yeesh.

I'm not too confident in Edelman. I grabbed him since I have Welker in one league but I think I'm starting Stuckey for this week between his ankle, the weather, and it not being a PPR league. I wish he was healthy but I'm just not sure it's worth the risk.

Rolling with Edelman today. I think the Falcons will bring pressure like the Jets did, which means more short passes for Brady. Edelman 5 catches w/ possibly more.
