FOXBOROUGH - The Atlanta Falcons are bringing plenty to Gillette Stadium today - a 2-0 record, a standout quarterback, a stable running attack, and a game-changing tight end.
Throughout the week, the Patriots were asked if today’s game will be their toughest yet. The answer may be yes, but for different reasons than those listed above.
The Patriots’ top two receivers could be on the sidelines.
On Friday, the Patriots listed Randy Moss (back) and Wes Welker (knee) as questionable. Welker wasn’t a surprise. He has been hampered by the knee injury and was a late scratch against the Jets. Again, Welker likely will be a game-time decision, according to coach Bill Belichick.
Moss, however, did not show up on the injury report until Friday, after Belichick’s final news conference of the week.
Belichick said backup plans are always in place, but those plans can be shaken up if another player is injured.
“Somebody takes reps at those positions during the course of the week,’’ Belichick said. “Now, if you lose two guys at the same position, I don’t care what position it’s at, now you’re probably talking about some adjustments.
“You lose two centers, you lose two corners, you lose two linebackers, you lose two of anything, then that - I would say 90 percent of the time - would be a pretty good scramble.
“To lose one guy at any position, you’ve got to be prepared for that. Unfortunately, that’s football.’’
Without Welker last week, the Patriots slipped rookie Julian Edelman into the lineup. He pulled down eight receptions for 98 yards, while veteran Joey Galloway added five catches for 53 yards. Brady targeted the duo a combined 28 times, as overall he completed 23 of 47 passes, four of which found Moss.
But not a single pass led to a touchdown, and the offense was stumped in a 16-9 loss to the Jets.
With a limited number of receivers today, the Patriots may look to special teams captain Sam Aiken, who made two starts at wide receiver last season and caught eight passes for 101 yards, the second-most in his seven-year career.
Earlier in the week, director of player personnel Nick Caserio said the team does not feel limited at receiver and considers Aiken an option.
Aiken routinely takes reps at receiver during practice and would be ready if needed, Caserio said.
“If there’s an opportunity for us to put him in the game, or if we feel we need to put him in the game for a handful of plays - or however many plays it might be - we have the utmost confidence in Sam and what he’s able to do offensively,’’ he said.
