We've cut the cable (1 Viewer)

Roku 4 released supporting 4K content. They also have a lot of Kodi like channels if you know where to look for them.
I feel like you'd be a good sounding board for this, tonydead.

In Genesis, it's not so much that it's acting up but some of the sources on there are really not working out as intended. I have it set to auto play (wired 150MBPS connection), and I find myself manually having to click through tons of garbage sources that Genesis aggregates after the auto load fails. I've tried googling "best Genesis sources Kodi" to really no avail. You have anything here?

I'm starting to think it's hit or miss based on how long what you're trying to watch has been out, the sources serving it, and how aggressively links are being killed off at the source. For example, TWD Tuesday night after the Sunday night airing has little to no problems insta-loading in auto play. Try that after SNF on Sunday night, you'd have to click through like 20 different sources to find one that's live and not in buffering misery. Try the Dark Night Rises auto play in 1080p (out for a few years) and it loads in like 3 seconds with no buffering the entire movie. Millions of possible examples, but that's the gist.
Genesis is very random for me, too. I can fire up the Interstellar 1080p option with absolutely zero issues whatsoever.

Brand new episode of a TV series? Genesis turns into Whack-A-Mole. What's happening to me lately is I click a link, it loads up maybe 2 seconds of the show before 10 seconds of buffering starts. Close, click another link, 2 seconds of show, 10 seconds of buffering, etc. Repeat process about a half-dozen times before you get to a link that functions correctly.

FTR, I have a HTPC that I built on my own a few years ago to serve as my main gaming PC, but has been "downgraded" to HTPC use. Still functions good. 25/10 Comcast internet.
Yeah, I never started using Genesis much because 1Channel works so well for me. There are broken streams in 1Channel too, but, what I like is that when it loads the streams it lists the number of views. That gives a pretty good indication of which streams are reliable. After awhile I remember which stream sources are reliable and just choose them first and it never takes me more than a couple tries to find a working stream. There are a couple of sources on 1Channel that almost always work, I can't remember which ones off the top of my head so I'll have to list them later.

Every time I've used Genesis I've had the same experience as you are explaining. If you haven't tired it give 1Channel a go. Sometimes when I'm in the mood for a movie and I don't have any one in particular in mind I'll go over to Genesis to browse because it has a better graphic interface, then when I find a movie I want to see I'll go back to 1Channel to watch it because I know I'll find a good stream.

I really don't think the internet speeds you guys are talking about have anything to do with it; it's the quality of stream sources available in the app. I have 50/25 Comcast. Also, make sure your settings are set to auto update the apps.

I don't keep up on the best apps as much as I should. They probably come and go and there might be better ones out there by now, I just wont get off my butt until 1Channel stops working.

On 1 Channel I can get streams of shows that aired same day, but, that is probably because I'm on the West Coast. Still my viewing tv schedule is just time shifted one day (I watch Fargo on Tuesday and American Horror on Thursday).

Anybody still using Robinhood? I had it installed for the very few things I want to watch live that aren't OTA (Republican debate the other day on CNBC) and it wouldn't even load Error Code 403.

I briefly read that Error Code 403 is a URL authentication failing and can sometimes be resolved by updating the app and clearing the cache. I haven't tired to fix it yet. That might help if some of the streams in Genesis fail with that code.

Is 1Channel different from Let Me Watch This? I tried watching some movies on Let Me Watch This and also IceFilms, and every version, it just says there was a problem with this item. This is my first time using these channels. Do you just keep trying links until you find that works?

:goodposting:

I switched to 1channel as well after having major issues with Genesis. Find that it works much better being able to see the amount of views a stream has. Not perfect as there are still bad feeds even on high viewer count streams but overall much better.

Robinhood is :deadbanana: to me. Good luck getting anything to work.

Bummer. There is a guy on YouTube that is always putting out videos on robinhood. Might have to check out the latest ones to see what its status is when I have time.

At least we are all experiencing the same things. That proves its not Kodi, our hardware or our networks.

I'll have to periodically check for the newest apps/developments and try to keep us updated on the latest. It's too big for them to not keep it going and I am super happy with 1Channel so far.

Is 1Channel different from Let Me Watch This? I tried watching some movies on Let Me Watch This and also IceFilms, and every version, it just says there was a problem with this item. This is my first time using these channels. Do you just keep trying links until you find that works?
Google tells me letmewatchthis is the old version of 1channel. So update your apps with the latest superrepo zip. Yes you have to try different streams sometimes to find a good working one. They often work the first time for me in 1channel, some times takes a couple tries.

Really now I think about it Straight outa Compton is the only stream I've tried that didn't work with 1Channel. They all froze at the exact same spot in the movie. It was probably something that got fixed, but, i haven't gone back to finish watching it yet.

In 1channel:

For new shows thevideo.me stream works almost every time.

For older stuff sometimes thevideo.me stream is not kept up and I find that the second most popular stream of promptfile.com usually works.

Lastly just try a few of the others.

Watching Sicario right now. HQ cam version is the only thing out yet I guess. Old lady will probably make me wait to watch it. She don't like the cams.

ETA: when we go see Star Wars opening weekend it will be the first time we've gone to a theatre in 3 years.

:lmao: me too, like an hour in where it freezes and it looks like a thumb is going back and forth?

Going to give 1channel a look, thanks

There are other Straight Outta Compton links that work, but yeah, it's as if one person ####ed up the encoding and said "#### it, it goes up on all the links".

Lolololol. I thought maybe someone did that on purpose to prove a point that when ice cube told the guy easy E was a ##### even his wife agreed. True story that's what went through my mind.

So with Thursday games being only on the NFL network (which I don't get), and Verizon customers being able to watch the NFL network on our phones - is there any decent, cheap, and legal way in which to get what's on my phone onto my TV for the Thursday games the next few weeks? The app doesn't "cast" to a chromecast or a roku.

It sounds like the app blocks screen casting. You should be able to "mirror" if you have the right phone. for example. You'll need to google "Screen Mirroring" or "Display Mirroring" along with your devices. iphone's screen mirroring is called airplay or airdrop. Both devices will need to be logged onto your home network too.

Yes, I have an iphone. Not at all familiar with what you're talking about here, though.

Well, iphone is the worst because like everything else they want to keep airplay so that it only plays nice within the apple world. So the easiest way is to use apple tv as shown in the link. I'm sure there are ways around it, but, just briefly googling around I read that apple rewrote a lot of the airplay software in the release of iOS9. So if you've already updated to iOS9 then the mirroring apps that used to work probably don't anymore. Good luck, apple sux.

Yeah, not changing phones for a few Thursday games that I can already watch (just only on my phone). If I care that much I'll go to a bar to watch the game.

Also side note, can you please change your avator back? All I want to do when I read your posts now is punch you in the face.

I couldn't get Airplay to work with the Verizon NFL app. I could get a few seconds, then it would stop.

can someone post the website where you can view what channels are available with an indoor leaf antenna based on your location? TIA

Hoping all the smart people in here can help me out.

I have an external drive full of DVD rips in MKV container (full DVD bitrate, not compressed). I currently have the drive connected to a WDTV Live and it works fine. If I get the new Amazon Fire Tv, can I install Plex on the Fire Tv, connect the drive to the Fire Tv, and watch the rips on tv?

I missed 51 pages of straight bootleg talk? Are you guys able to watch sports on these things? If so... What post do I start at to get signed up?

Yes, it's unfortunate that this thread is filled with so much bootleg info.

First let me say that diehard sports fans won't be happy cutting the cable. Sports is the one area that cable/satellite have to retain their customer base.

That being said, the non-diehard sports fan can get quite a bit of sports after cutting the cable.

First of all, 30% of all NFL regular season games are broadcast over the air (OTA) for free by CBS, FOX and NBC. You'll get at least four every week. The first half of the season you'll get five with the the Thursday night game being OTA before it switches to the NFL network for the second half. You'll also get an additional two games Thanksgiving week.

College football gets a good chunk of OTA play as well. ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC (Notre Dame home games) typically show at least one marquee game a week, sometimes more.

Baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer rarely get shown on OTA, but you can catch them from time to time. However, before staying with cable/satellite to get your baseball, basketball and hockey fixes there are some paid options that are cheaper per year than a full year of a cable/satellite bill. If you've got 10+ mbs of internet speed, streaming options are available to get those sports.

First, Sling TV is a $20 per month service that gives you 20 popular cable channels you can view using a Roku (or other supported streaming device). The channels include ESPN, ESPN2, TNT and TBS, which have a lot of baseball and basketball games on them, both pro and college. The Sling TV subscription also entitles you to use WatchESPN (in a browser or as an app like on a Roku) to access all of ESPN3's content. I pay an additional $5 a month to get the Sports add on with Sling TV, which also gives me ESPNU, ESPNNews and other tertiary sports channels (lots of soccer and olympic type sports).

Second, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS all have streaming subscription services. For example, an MLB.TV subsciption gives you live access to stream all out of market MLB games. The downside is most people want to watch the team for the market they are in. I believe NBA, NHL and MLS have similar blackout rules. This is because those cable/satellite channels have exclusive local broadcast rights. So if you want to watch your local team live, you'll need to stay a customer of cable/satellite.... or sort through the 51+ pages here of bootleg info to try and watch them for free.

I have Verizon with every channel, three DVR boxes, phone, and most importantly internet. My kids buy movies also, so our bill is obscene. My wife has agreed to dump it but we have no idea where to begin. I have an Xbox 360, and may be getting a ps4. We like to watch Showtime, HBO, Disney kids channels, not cartoons, think Dog With a Blog type crap. I like to watch the Celtics on CSN, and the Red Sox occasionally. I never watch football but kinda like having red zone. Soccer channels would be nice to have. At least NBC sports one. Bein I don't have to have. Bravo would be nice for wife. We will need heavy internet as my kids watch you tube and play mine craft survivor games 24/7. Celtics is probably my #1 watch.

I want to cut the cable. So where do I start?

Kinda unrelated but I used air play on my sons phone to get the Dead and Company Show through my Yamaha reciever. It worked fine, but since then the net radio AND my Sirius XM won't work on the receiver anymore. Obviously it can't be a coincidence. Any idea what apple did to my connection? Is it a network issue? It's really annoying to lose net radio. Thanks

I think Sling tv plus ota antenna would work well for you. Sling has HBO and a kids package available.

Firesticks and roku 3s everywhere, like Best Buy/Walmart, for $25. I've seen roku 4 for $75.

Signed up for Sling TV and they offer a $50 coupon off of Fire TV if you pre-pay the 1st 3 months of service ... with the price reduced down to $75, you can get Fire TV for $25! Passing along for others that might be ready to take the plunge.

:goodposting: This link should get you started too. Once you've done the "install from zip" operation it will be the same way for all other repositories you want to add. Note: The links to the different repositories get broken and changed, but, you can find them just by google searching. Also, if you don't find a link that Kodi can get directly you can just download the zip file to your computer (or side load to firestick) and then go get them in file manager in Kodi.

Just google top kodi channels to find channels you want to try, google which repository they are in and install from zip that repository and those channels will become available.

So I have tried sling. It was decent. Had a few lag issues and a few times where I need to switch over to the watchespn app. I tried an OTA antenna by the tv and then the attic. Much better in the attic but still could not pick up the local CBS affiliate. Placed it outside and it was perfect. Problem is that the ole hood restricts antennas outdoors.

Side question: How can I mirror AMC to a Roku or PS4? I tried plugging my patio directly into the tv and the lag was horrible. On an iPad it streams perfectly. 50 Megs down.

Question for my cable cutter friends but first I have to make a confession.

-I went a long time without cable and was OK but our new place comes with basic cable so I went ahead and just made it an HD/DVR thing and I get it all for about $50 a month on top of the internet so my cable/internet bill is still over $100 a month but what are you gonna do?

-My MIL lives in a remote part of Brooksville north of Tampa. She is probably a good 40-50 miles form the TV stations in Tampa. She is about 75 miles from Orlando stations. She has no restrictions on her 5 acres when it comes to an antenna. We bought her a new TV with all the bells and whistles but the Mohu/Moku isn't working so well although I know they make a stronger one. I was wondering if I should get a pole and hook up one of those larger outdoor ones and get her a lot more channels. Any ideas for outdoor antennas?

I have a Winegard HD8200U and am about 40 miles out and it works pretty good. They claim it will get HD tv up to 65 miles but a lot of different factors play a role in it's line of sight; mountains/trees. I would think it would work well on a pole if you are not obstructed. There will be an optimal height vs coax length too if you are talking about a tall pole.

If I'm understanding you correctly just get the Sling tv app on the Roku and log into your account.

Finalized the plunge, project to save ~$125/month vs. our previous ATT U-verse set-up (~15mpbs internet speed):

Xfinity (Comcast) cable internet: 75mbps @ $50/month

SlingTV (Basic) @ $20/month

Purchased our own OTA ($20) + modem ($38) + router ($58) + Amazon Fire TV ($25, on black Friday w/SlingTV coupon) + Tablo DVR ($170) = $311

Paid a local company via Amazon services $25 to come set it all up (I'm a tech moron), which had been a previous barrier for me.

Thanks to all for the tips on equipment, etc. in this thread.

Question - looks like most recent content is saved in the 'on demand' queue anyway, but is it possible to DVR content from SlingTV to Tablo?

but is it possible to DVR content from SlingTV to Tablo?
Yes, but not for a tech moron. Essentially the device that's playing the SlingTV content has to have it's output signal converted to a Coax signal. Then the Tablo would be able to tune into it on channel 2 or 3 (depending on what channel the converter uses). Since the Tablo only has one antenna input, this would be the only channel it knows about, and it would have no guide info to know what programs are playing, so it would be like the old VCR setup where you have to manually tell it when to record, AND you would have to manually start streaming the right channel on SlingTV. If you haven't noticed, Sling will automatically log you off.

This is much easier to do on my old Tivo Premier, which has both a coax cable input and coax antenna input. I used to have my Roku converted over to the coax cable input and it showed up on my Tivo as channel 3 in addition to all the channels I got from the antenna input. Really easy to switch over to the Roku just by going to channel 3. But I never had Tivo record anything because again it's all manual recordings. Plus I switched over to the Tivo Roamio before Sling TV came out. The new Tivos don't have multiple coax inputs.
