I think in Europe they went to court to block these type of boxes.  I am sure this is a precursor of what will happen in the US eventually.

In general the more popular and easier to access data that is copy writed, the more the copy write holders are going to pressure the government to plug the hole.   The beauty of technology is that it is always one or ten steps ahead of the government for these cases.

Much like with torrenting, no one is going to waste the time going after the user, the government will try and attack the distribution model, which is where the can get the most bang for their buck.  In streamings case, they are going to go after the Kodi plugin people if they can't make a case against Kodi themselves for providing the platform for people to access the copy writed data.
What's the scoop with IVACY VPN? Looks like $35 for 2 years? Is that a great price? Is their service good? Easy to use?

I got hooked on them years ago when I lived in a rural area with a really flaky ISP whose internet seemed to go on the fritz a couple times a week, so having an offline copy of the show I wanted to see was clutch. Plus, I also worked in a place where I could take my laptop to work and watch movies to kill the time, and I wouldn't want to be caught streaming on the company's internet.

It's an extreme example, but an example nonetheless.
perfectly makes sense if you don't have fast internet speed.  i'm a frugal sob, but that's one thing i always pay for with the amount of time i spend in front of the tv.

what is the go to torrent sites these days?  the only thing i ever need to torrent is ufc events b/c they're just on too late for me to want to stay up for and watch live.  i used to use kick ### torrents, but i tried that a few weeks back and they had nothing for the fights from the night before.
I mostly do movies so use PirateBay and YTS, now occasionally use RARBG and extratorrent.

I use Private Internet Access.  They also have an Android app.  Never had any issues.

i really don't know what quality you're looking for.
1080p with dd5.1 sound is what I always torrent.

When I tried out Kodi a few months ago, I found this very basic level of quality to be lacking and had to search for it which became much to big a hassle.

But if it works for you, great!  I will try again every few months to see if some things are better for my situation.

I have never used them.

I am a big fan of PIA.  I think you will find most people on FBG are using PIA and most if not all have had good experiences with them.

I should mention that kick ### was down for a long long time.   The government shut them down but they recently ressurected under a slightly new address.  I have not tried them since the resurrection

If your router has a USB port, you just need to make sure your router supports USB drive sharing and then all on the network should be able to see the hard drive.

Here are some instructions

Thanks for the info.

I now have the hdd hooked up to the router and I'm able to access it directly with my laptop.  Mission accomplished.  Now, is it possible to access this drive directly with an iphone or android phone?

Iphones don't have a traditional file system from what I know so I don't think you can directly reach them from the iOS, but I do think itunes will allow you to sync wirelessly to a network drive.  I have never tried it though.

I know less than nothing about Android so I can't help you there.

Yes.  If you use an app like Kodi to access it.

This is not technically true.

While no one ever gets in trouble for streaming, it is certainly a gray area in terms of copy write and other issues.  There is a reason it is called "Streaming Piracy" in the industry.

Why would it be considered copyright infringement if you never take possession of anything?  If there is no case law for it I wouldn't call it illegal.  You can listen to any song you choose, for example, on YouTube.

I'm guessing this has been discussed in this thread but does anyone have Sling TV? I'm thinking about trying it mostly for sports. I only have an antenna right now which can pick up basic channels (PBS, CBS, ABC, Fox, NBC). I can see most of the major sporting events but still miss out on a lot.

Not anymore, but, works great and always adding new channels and packages. 7 day free trial, and usually free or discounted streaming device with prepaid three months. Best part is if you don't like or decide you don't need it just cancel, no strings or contract attached.

Yeah I should do the 7 day free trial. I already have a Roku so it would be pretty easy for me to add on I think

I had Sling for the summer soccer tournaments and Olympics.  It was great, but I'm not in a location where it offered networks.

A survey done by the Wall Street Journal suggests the average chord cutter saves $104 per month.  Link

As Netlix, Hulu, Amazon and others add new series and tv shows, so far this year the major cable networks have cancelled at least 3.

Fire TV is bluetooth capable and can connect to bluetooth headphones?  Huh, did not know that, always liked the Roku headphone jack and wished the fire would do that. This is even better!

I've had a lag with Kodi video, but yes this is a thing. You can manually sync the time offset, it's sweet.

For those of you that can't remember to cancel a free 7 day trial - Slingtv fee this weekend with no credit card required.

ETA: OMG!! Premier of Walking Dead this Sunday FREE OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!

ESPN stand alone streaming service confirmed.  Will be out sometime in 2017.

HBONow, after being available as a stand alone for over 2 years, is moving to get their app on and into any and every device and package service provider as possible to "give our customers the option to get it however and whenever they want it".  (this should be a big red flag sign of the times)

Just a few reference points for you guys thinking of cutting the cable cord, are seeking nearly the same ease of use and channel lineup, but are not looking into the Kodi route...

We are definitely enjoying the switch over to DirectTVNow.  $35/mo, inclusive of all taxes is great.  The clarity of fast moving sports is a bit worse than the Dish, but too is just being picky.

We jumped on the DTVNow intro offer where we prepaid for 3 mos and received the newest 4th generation AppleTV.

I was pretty happy with Dish and would have stayed with them had they not stopped giving me a $50 monthly credit to keep their service.  I do not miss those phone calls to Dish customer service to re-instate the credit going forward and threatening to cancel service.  I made good on my threat to cut Dish service immediately once they jacked our bill from mid $40/mo. to ~$100/mo.

As long as DTVNow retains the channel lineup and their promise have this price locked in, we will be happy with the service provided at $35/mo.  The one thing that DTVNow is lacking is DVR functionality.  I find it a bit inexcusable that in late 2016 with all of the technology available they failed to incorporate this DVR function.  They say it will roll out sometime this year.

We also have Netflix and HBOGo.

FWIW, both of my siblings dropped Xfinity/Comcast cable TV service at their houses and went with DTVNow.  We are all happy and wish we had this option earlier.

I'd love to see the monthly, quarterly, and annual numbers of lost subscribers for Xfinity, Dish, and DTV.

I've been using PSVue for the past 8 months. The DVR is a nice feature, but most everything we want to DVR is available OnDemand anyway. OD doesn't allow you to fast forward, but there's usually only a commercial or two and is almost quicker than fast forward/rewind to get to the right spot.

My biggest complaint is not being able to pause live TV for more than a few seconds.

My second biggest complaint is that my IP address put me into the wrong market and the sign-up system wouldn't allow me to change, but I finally called customer service to get it fixed.

PS Vue has been good/reliable so far.  I just started testing it recently, but it does mention an NFL Redzone option as well.

Hang on for DVR.  Vue has 30 days for most shows (I think) and Sling is in beta right now.  It's only a matter of time.

Got basically no inclination to ever go back.

I miss MLB the most and I'd be willing to pay for a blackout free package, but I'm not even going to bother this year.  If they don't want to take my money and give me a legit stream vs. having to DNS unblock I'll keep the cash and buy a bottle of scotch.

The Archer C3150 is currently $139.99 on Amazon, and has free shipping for Prime members. This wireless router has very positive reviews from what I can see - does anyone here have one? If so, how is it?

I'm going to move to a separate DSL modem and wireless router, and am thinking this would be a good one to get if it's as good as the reviews say. Currently I use a Centurylink combo modem & router, and my coverage and speed is just ok. Upgrading the modem and router should give me much better results, right? I'm in a three level house that doesn't have a major interference problem.

Yep. I need that. Effectively doubles the bandwidth of my C7. I love tplink.

So let's say I get both the DSL Modem and the Archer C3150 above. Is it as simple as replacing my current combo modem/router with these two and I have my internet back but faster and with greater wireless coverage? Or will I have to contact Centurylink and have them send a new signal to the replacement modem?

I  cut the cable a few years ago and went with Centurylink for my high-speed internet only as I was fed up with Comcast's billing. I pay $34/month for either 25 or 40MB service.

How much are you guys paying monthly for internet?

Who do you use as your provider?
If I only had internet at the speed I currently have (100 mbs or so) it would be around 80some a month, before taxes and fees and such.  All in (bundled package) I'm at $130 a month or so.  So yes, I haven't "cut the cable", but that $50 or so a month extra gets me roughly 100 channels (most in HD) with a pretty sweet DVR.

I think my provider knows that they are the only option for high speed in my neighborhood, possibly the county.  And because my wife works from home it would be worth 3-4x that to us if we had to.
