What condiments for a turkey & swiss sandwich? (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
This has caused great personal torment for years now. Let's settle this.

Mustard goes with cheese, but it's gross combined with turkey.

Mayo goes with turkey, but it's gross combined with cheese.

What are my options here?

This is what I would do. Start with mayo on the bread, both slices of bread (I prefer it lightly toasted), then cheese (again on both slices of bread), then lettuce, then a tomato with a tad bit of mayo on the tomato, then add the turkey. Add a slice of ham if you have it, then add mustard on the ham. If you want to spice it up with some more flavor, add some banana peppers.

I like turkey with mustard.

Then again my people don't eat mayo, so my choices are somewhat limited.

Absolutely on the lettuce and tomato but you really need the bread to be toasted.

You don't have to toast it, especially if it's good bread, but I like BLTs and therefore toasted bread is in my wheelhouse. Plus the mayo on the crunchiness of the bread is what makes every bite good.

The book says you don't put mustard on a cold sandwich like that. Mustard goes on the hot stuff... hot dogs, burgers and the like. I know people put mustard on sandwiches all the time but it's a foul according to the authority. Mayo is the "correct" condiment on any cold turkey sandwich regardless of bread or whether or not cheese is present. Mayo would be considered a foul on a hot dog or burger but people do mayo on burgers all the time. I believe I read that mayo +ketchup on a hot item is acceptable because really all it's doing is elevating the ketchup.

Mustard is great with ham.

Although my bread/rolls are always toasted, so it's not entirely "cold" I suppose.

The best pairing for mustard is a potato knish, followed by hot pastrami or corned beef.

Regardless mustard goes with all cold cuts, better with ham than turkey IMO, not so much with roast beef unless a horseradish mustard.

Got an Arby's near you? That tender, sliced roast beef is killer with a fresh bun and mayo.

ETA: Our version of Arby's is Walt's. I like it much, much better but it's only a local place.

I wish I had an Arby's nearby, I see there commercials all the time, but I think the closest one to me is in Queens. Anyways, I'm not knocking mayo and use it frequently too. Obviously mayo is much worse for you, so I try to lean mustard, but I like either depending on my mood.

Mustard is fantastic. I have five types in my fridge now (no yellow, that #### is repulsive) and they all go great with turkey.

Chipotle mayo, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce

Lol @ someone telling me what's right or wrong on a sandwich. My turkey & swiss always has a little mayo, mustard (usually Dijon or brown), lettuce, dill pickle, and some salt and pepper. Banana peppers if I have em, theyre a highly underrated sandwich topping. Toasted or grilled bread if I feel so inclined, but cold is good too.

BTW, is the complete lack of commentary on this particular detail due to the consensus knowledge that swiss cheese sucks?

I once got a year long T.O. at this place for describing mayo. I will not repeat my depiction of it again, but suffice it to say that it is never an appropriate condiment for human consumption. It should only be served up in hell, by the devil himself, and to his concubines only.

The correct condiment here is a red pepper and cranberry chutney.
