I feel like I can be a snob about fries since I'm Belgian and we invented "french" fries.

This is the best way to have them. There are a handful of decent attempts made at this here in the states, but getting these from a fry cart in Belgium or the NEtherlands is the best way hands down. Mayonnaise or similar sauce is not optional.

My faves:

1) Baby potatoes microwaved until done, smashed own to about 3/8" thick and then pan fried in duck fat and sprinkled with chopped rosemary, maldon salt, and pepper. Alternatively they can be deep fried in duck fat or peanut oil.
2) Cold baked potatoes cut into wedges or hand pulled into chunks for more crispy bits and deep fried in peanut oil.

I want party with you one day, Cowboy.

There was a Belgan fry shop called Bel Frites in downtown San Luis Obispo years ago that was run by a Cal Poly SLO professor and his wife. They offered like 8 different dipping sauces. Damn those fries were the bomb.

@El Floppo

"You can cut potatoes either thinly or thickly. In France, thick-cut fries are called “pommes Pont-Neuf”[or simply “pommes frites”, about 10 millimeters (3/8 inch), while “pommes allumettes” (matchstick potatoes) are cut about 7 millimeters (1/4 inch) thick and “pommes pailles” (potato straws) only about 3–4 millimeters (⅛ inch). The very thinnest French fries do not need the double fry technique, but cutting them that finely can be very fussy for home cooks."

Thanks!

I took French in HS, been to France a bit, and eaten at a lot of French spots over the years... Never seen or heard those or anything except "pomme frites" on the menu in regards to "French fries" of any cut. But also never considered what form those might take... And from memory seems like it's typically or maybe exclusively of the thinner variety. Pommes pont neuf sounds like something you'd buy from a tourist cart next to the bridge.

Note: not a French fries expert. My memory sucks. Haven't been to France for more than a day in 10 years.

Guy Fieri’s restaurants (which suck but is in the Cancun airport so yeah) serves a very good fry that’s just a mix of like the different kinds and that’s a great idea. More places should so that.

These are always solid

I like the regular thin fries, preferably beer battered fries.

Crinkle cut is the worst form factor by far
My least favorite are steak fries.

One place near me does them very well (and make an outstanding homemade ketchup)…. And ketchup in our house is known as heathen sauce.
I’ve had some good steak fries but I agree that they usually aren’t good. Can’t think of a crinkle cut that I’ve ever had that’s passable.

I like them around 3/16 - 1/4”
I prefer pomme frites (shoestring)
I've never heard this. Have only heard pomme frites being... French fries (in French).

Speaking of...Poutine
Lemme rephrase... Is this a common thing, calling this specific French fry type "shoe string" the French name "pomme frites" for the overall genre?

I've not seen or heard of this.
It’s the name I see in fancier restaurants. I assume it’s to make the fact that they’re serving fries with a sixty dollar entree sound more justifiable.
It’s like the difference between grits and polenta. The price on the menu

All fries can be great when done properly.

We had a local place that were home to great waffle fries
Texas Roadhouse and Red Robin have good steak fries when they are done right
Shoestrings are great too

And who doesn't like a $400 bag of Five Guy fries??

I like crinkle for loaded, I have also had a good thinner steak fries (good for loaded too)

They're all good if done correctly but waffle stands out for me due to texture.

Thick wedges/steak fry types are really inconsistent in my experience.

Curly probably 2nd for me even though I rarely have them

Last time I ate at a Guy Fieri restaurant I almost had to go to the ER for extreme bloating and constipation.
We usually only get the fries and a drink as we wait for our plane back home. It’s basically Guys or Bubba Gumps lol.

I love fries....but have started leaning into tator tots.....nothing beats a good tator tot....also have a soft place in my heart for the Potato Ole's at Taco John's....I think they put crack in whatever seasoning they use...so good

for the purpose of the poll....voted regular.....hot (like burn your finger a little hot) fresh and salted from McD's are pretty hard to beat

I love me a good french fry. Shoestrings are good, so are curly. Waffle? Sure. I voted for crinkle-cut, though. Seems like those are consistently the best no matter where you're at.

All of the above. I'm addicted to fries, as long as they are simply normal salted and not any of that garlic or sweet potato kind.

the only good crinkle cut fry I ever had was at the local bowling alley lunch counter - fried when ordered, hot crispy and those crinkles are giant grease holders - they would almost squirt when you bit into them. The cheeseburgers were awesome as well.

a crinkle fry anywhere else has been a non-starter for me

i mean i hate to say this but mcdonalds fries are pretty much damned near perfect take that to the bank bromigos
When fresh, they are. They tend to get chewy pretty quick though.
oh yeah you need them damned near right out of the frier and with salt on them but man when you hit that note its like a symphony of flavor just got up in there take that to the bank brohans

i have consistency concerns too but my doctor said it is nothing to worry about just need to eat more fiber and guess what that means more micky d fries take that to the bank brochachos
