What is the best mattress? (1 Viewer)

Sleep innovations 10" scheduled for delivery tomorrow. Do you really have to let these things air out a day or two or will it be ready for action within hours of unboxing?

Anyone use one of these directly on a platform bed, without a box spring? Would that still be as sturdy/comfortable for sleeping/banging?

I've had two memory foam beds in my time (got rid of first because a girlfriend disliked it and getting rid of second to move up to to a king foam now that I'm married with 3 animals)....the mattress will come vacuum sealed and smaller than you expect, but it will take form very quickly. The airing out that most recommend is for a paint-like smell that takes a couple of days to dissipate. If you can handle the smell, go for it.

As for the platform/box-spring query....Ideally the recommendation is to have it on slats or a box spring that allows the mattress to get some air, but it can certainly be used right on top of a platform bed and some just use a piece of plywood in place of a box spring.

Ordered the same bed and been using it for a week. Sleeping great and with no back pain. But, does anybody have the same problem where the bed doesn't seem flat? Seems higher in the middle...

Over a year now and still really happy with my Bed in a Box (queen, bamboo cover)

Only addition I made was to cover it with a standard thinly padded cotton mattress pad...reduces the heat issue a bit since not sleeping right on top of the foam.
Almost 2 years for us. Still the best bed I ever owned. So comfortable.
I'm about to buy one of these. Torn between the base model and the PacBamboo. What is it about the bamboo cover that makes it worth the extra $500?

I love the PacBamboo. Lots of others do too. I'm not sure what the difference is, but no hesitation whatsoever -- I'd say pull the trigger on it.

Sleep Innovations itself says box springs, platform or slats are just fine with their mattresses.

I put my 12" King Sleep Innovations on top of the box springs (King uses two) i used for my old spring mattress and it works just fine. Had the mattress for a month now and loving it!

We're having a lot of buying anxiety right now. I was ready to just pull the trigger on one of the Sleep Innovations beds, but we went to a Mattress Firm just to try some different beds out, and I am concerned about how much the firmness in these foam beds can be. Some were just way too firm for us.

For those of you who blindly bought online, how did you know what to choose without trying it out?

Sometimes you just take a shot at something, add with many online purchases. Careful with the sleep innovations. One I bought for my parents and one my toddler, both way firm. I think my pacbamboo bed in a box is right in the sweet spot.

My mattress saga has been a giant pain in the ###.

I bought the 14" novaform serafina gel bed. it never opened up to the correct shape, it was too hot for my wife, which was a surprise. And it felt as if I was in the starting gate for the luge when I sat on the edge of the bed. If I didn't pay attention I would slide right off the bed to the floor.

We then bought a pillow top bed from Costco. It sucked. Obvious canyons for both of us developed within 3 months. Took that #### back.

1 week into an ortho, factory direct, pembridge II, firm. So far so good.

I hate that I can't just sleep anywhere, on anything. My wife and daughter have taken to calling me the princess and the pea. :/

I was anxious as well, but based on what I learned in this thread and reading a ####load of Amazon reviews, I felt more confident. I went with the 10" Sleep Innovations based on the research because of the depth of the soft layer on top, and it was just right. It was a gamble that paid off.

My thoughts exactly, except I went with the 12".

Can you guys please link to the specific mattresses?

Trying out a Sealy Optimum Radiance right now...I think I slept better last night than I have in a while on this bed

Can you compare the firmness of this to any other specific beds, like Sealy or Tempurpedic?

It's firm, but it's different than just a normal firm mattress. If I sit on the edge of the bed, I think it's a rock, but when I lie on it, it's very comfortable. That's actually the biggest difference for us - sitting on the edge to put on socks is more like sitting on a wooden chair than a couch cushion. When lying down, it's perfectly comfortable and doesn't really feel firm. You certainly don't sink down as far into it, but it doesn't feel like a board under you.

We had a 1996 pillow top Beautyrest by Simmons that was replaced by this, and it was a step up. We liked that mattress, but we prefer this one. It's been 2 years now and we're still happy... I don't know how long it will last, but at that price, it doesn't really have to last forever. To this point, it still feels like it did on day 1. Two years into the Beautyrest, it had 2 permanent valleys that were starting to think about meeting in the middle, regardless of how many times we flipped it (that was back in the mattress flipping days, which seem to have passed).

Also, there are over 1000 reviews... granted, they're simpleton non-FBGs, but everyone ordered them off the internet without trying them first (with an average 4.5 rating IIRC).

I went with the base model, the PacBed Original. I'm sure the PacBamboo is great, just seems like the same bed with a bamboo pillowtop for an extra $500. Their site says the bamboo mattress is firmer than the original, so that was my only concern. But with their return policy, I figured I have nothing to lose.

What an awesome bed. Slept on it for the first time last night. It's actually much firmer than my old mattress so that isn't an issue at all. It's really solid, but gives just enough in all the right places. I sleep on my side, and I think with my old bed my hips were sinking into the bed too much and I'd have back soreness some mornings. With this bed, my spine is in perfect alignment.

I bought a foundation too. Total came to $1048 with free shipping. It's early yet, but I already feel like it's the best bed I've ever owned, and at that price, with a 20-year warranty, no-brainer.

Bought this today. Got it with a set of box springs for $850 from this place, just a huge warehouse out in the country. If anyone is in SW Ohio, this is worth the drive.

Crazy how much more REM sleep I get now. I've had more dreams this past week than the past year. Also feel more refreshed in the morning. Wish I'd gotten a new bed years ago.

I have the PacBamboo Bed in a Box. Looking to upgrade my bedroom furniture...this mattress is OK sitting on a platform bed frame correct? (So mattress sitting directly on a piece of wood...no slats or anything underneath it)

Yes should be fine.

6 weeks in to our Sleep Innovations 12" Sure Temp memory foam mattress. Got it for $399 through Amazon.

The first few days, it took some getting used to. Now I love it. It seems to sleep warmer, but that honestly could be because (duh) its the warm time of year. Sex is still great.

Thanks NJDawg for your help. http://forumimages.footballguys.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/thumbup1.gif
I bought the 10" queen via Amazon based on the thread. Had it for almost 2 years now. Very good bed. My wife and I both love it.
Exactly the same for me.
Otis, I recommend this. I've told others at work and they've all been happy as well.
Thanks -- funny, I got impatient, and after reading a bunch of reviews just bought two of these Sleep Innovations (a twin for my kid's room, a queen for my parents). I actually got this one with the gel swirl added in, which supposedly will make it sleep a bit cooler.

I'll report back on these. My parents in particular will be an interesting test case -- they've never slept on a memory foam mattress, and my wife and I have been trying to convert them since we made the switch two years ago. We shall see.
Hey Oat. Do you think the Gel foam makes a difference in heat?

I'm torn between the Sleep Innovations 10", 12" or 12" w/gel

Thanks

Now that I'm digging deeper it seems like the Novaform Altabella is described as their most plush model. So even though it is firm underneath, the surface has more of a pillowtop feel. Not sure if that is what we are looking for. How would you describe the feel of the one you got, and do you remember the model? Did you go to other stores and compare? Trying to figure out how to pick a foam mattress that we may never lay on before we get it.

Wife is wanting a new bed (our Stearns and Foster double pillow top is about 12 years old and has divots where we sleep). Looking at https://www.tuftandneedle.com/mattress, the Casper mentioned above, or this one from Costco. Any insights here from anyone?
There is a difference between latex foam and memory foam. You should go out to some bed stores and try both kinds. We have a latex foam bed (about two years) and love it, but they are generally more pricey than the memory foam beds. Good to seem Casper introducing some competition to the latex beds.

The Casper bed only has 1.5" of latex foam on it....do you think that is enough to make a difference?

Maybe to address the "hotness" issue some people notice with memory foam. Not sure its going to be enough to address the comfort issue (seems people either really like the memory foam or really dislike it). They have a 1.5" of high density memory foam under the latex...with a total depth of 10". Unfortunately they only have one location to try it out right now (NY). You may want to still go try out different latex and memory foam beds. We went out with the intent of buying a memory foam bed but didn't like the feel of them.

That Tuft and Needle one looks and sounds very nice according to reviews and descriptions. Will be moving in the next few months and am in the market. I was recently given a queen size bed frame set, just a need mattress set. After reviewing that, looks like I could get the T&N model and a box spring base for it for ~700-800. Anyone here tried them?

It appears that this is another affordable latex option (this one with 3" of latex). Apparently it can be of varying firmness and when buying if you choose "Customize, Ask Chuck" you'll get a person contacting you to help determine the right level for you. Interesting.

Have this same question.

I need to get a new mattress this week my back is hurting.
