What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

Friend in town so got it going yesterday. Went to Alpine for lunch. Had a few IPAs. Lounged for a bit with a Central Waters Peruvian Morning 2013 and then:

2009 Bourbon County

Cellarmaker Double Dobis

Surly Five

Bourbon County Coffee 2012

Lawson's Sip of Sunshine

Bourbon County Bramble 2011

Alpine Baby Face

Bourbon County Rare

Russian River Framboise for a Cure 2013

Bourbon County Barleywine 2013

Cantillon 1900 Grand Cry 2009
Having Lost Abbey Summer Pale Ale now but...

From the bottom up, I sampled 4 ounces each of...

Bruges Cruise

Dinkus

Golden Girl

Abockalypse

Tis the Saison

Struggle Bus

Alt in the Family

Three Beagles

Of Kolsch

Back Garden

And this

I need to move back to North County. Ah wth, opening the Older Viscosity, drown my sorrows.

Funny the Lost Abbey pic is blurry like I was when I took it. I'm going to a huge bottle shop near downtown LA tomorrow. I would appreciate some must try suggestions from Midwest/East Coast brewers. I've been pretty limited to west coast beers. Also still looking for a trading partner from those regions. Also if San Diego is the best beer city in country does that make it the best beer city in the world? I think so. Or Portland.

Upper Midwest

FFF, Pipeworks, Half Acre, GI, 18th Street, Founder's, Bell's, Greenbush, New Glarus, Toppling Goliath, Great Lakes, Boulevard are some of my favorites. I'd trade with ya, but live in NW Indiana -- can't ship beer here unfortunately.

Three Floyds and Toppling Goliath are two I've wanted to trade for. They're not out here.

That is a hell of a day of drinking. Did you have a favorite of the bunch?

The Avery 22nd Anniversary Party was really cool on Saturday. They broke out all kinds of rare vintage barrel-aged and sour beers. Their new brewery is a such a great space to host festivals and a vast improvement over their old place in Boulder. They have a huge outdoor space and a stage for music. Here is a picture that I took of the new brewery.

Here's what I sampled:

Momi Hiwa imperial coconut porter aged in rum barrels

Dihos Dactylion sour ale aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels

Thensaurum sour ale aged in rum barrels

Uncle Jacob's Stout aged in bourbon barrels (2013)

Tweak imperial coffee stout aged in bourbon barrels (2014)

Rumpkin imperial pumpkin ale aged in rum barrels (2013)

Eremita II sour ale with peachs and apricots

Eremita VI sour ale with key limes

Eremita VII sour ale with cucumber and hibiscus

Immitis sour ale aged in Zinfandel barrels

Hog Heaven barleywine (2002 & 2005)

Black Eye imperial stout aged in rum barrels

Obscuro & Nimbosus sour ale with key lime and ginger aged in rum barrels

Tectum et Elix sour ale aged in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels

Cloud 9 witbier with orange zest and vanilla beans

Mephistopheles' Stout (2009)

My favorites of the day were probably the Momi Hiwa, Dihos Dactylion, Uncle Jacob's Stout (2013), and the Eremita series, but just about everything was great, except for the Mephistopheles' Stout (2009), which tasted like straight soy sauce from autolyzed yeast.

I definitely recommend attending any of Avery's various beer festivials (SourFest, IPA Fest, Strong Ale Fest) if you get the chance.

Not supposed to ship beer anywhere really, but you don't have to tell FedEx or UPS you're shipping beer ;)

Stupid state laws. Buddy of mine tried to send a case of wine back from his vacation in CA -- post office took it.

Had a really nice vacation out to Myrtle Beach. Stayed in South Myrtle Beach at Ocean Lakes (avoid - it's f'ing packed with people. Locals call it the Redneck Riviera and it's very apt).

Wicked Weed - Lived up to the hype. Very good food and beer. Stopped on the way down and the way back.

NoDa - as Wing mentioned placed closed at 9:30p. Didn't even think about checking out hours since I have never heard of such a thing! We drove from Asheville to Charlotte specifically for this so was very disappointed. I did wind up going to Salud, which is a great bottle shop and got a nice selection of NoDa, Birdsong (last 4 pack) and two Unknown and one Highland Crowlers. Wish we had a place like this in IL. Nothing like free samples and Crowlers. Unknown is a really nice brewery wish I could find their beer locally.

Spent way the hell too much money on beer. Insane. On the list of beers, only going to list how I thought they were and not many tasting notes since I didn't write it down and well can't remember some of them all that well.

List of beer from the week...not sure I got all of them on untapped either. Not all local, some were brought by others to share.

Smokey Mountain Brewery (Knoxville, TN) - Appalachian Pale Ale - Ok Pale.

Wicked Weed - Pernicious IPA - Very good IPA (two growlers)

Geen Man Brewery - The Rainmaker DIPA - Very good

Southern Tier - Tangier IPA - good to very good

Wicked Weed - Dark Age Bourbon Stout - Very good but like most BA stouts I can't only do a small pour

Lonerider - Addie's Revenge IPA - Good/Very Good

Terrapin - Maggie's Blackberry Cobbler Farmhouse Ale - Very Good

Deschtes - The Stoic BA Belgian Quad - Very good see the BA stout comment

Green Flash - Soul Style IPA - Very good - was very surprised how much I liked this one

Terrapin - RecreationAle IPA - Good

Unknown - Scratch n Sniff IPA - Very Good - wish I could find this locally

Birdsong - Jalapeno Pale Ale - Very Very Good - Thanks goes to Wing for the recommendation and very glad I picked it up.

Wicked Weed - Montmarreto Sour/Wild Ale - Very good for my first Sour/Wild Ale. Got better the more I drank but got worse as it warmed up (drinking outside in 90 degree plus high humidity didn't help)

4 Hands - Sugar and Spice Winter Warmer - Ok not my style

Evil Twin - Even More Jesus Imperial Stout - Very good

Unknown - Over the Edge with Grapefruit IPA - Very Very good.

NoDa - Jam Session IPA - Very good

Triple C Brewering - 3C IPA - Good/Very Good

NoDa - Hop, Drop 'n Roll IPA - Very Good (have 2 more 4 packs sitting in my fridge :) )

Wicked Weed - Glutenous Minimus IPA - In the Fridge sample was better than Pernicious

Wicked Weed - Freak of Nature DIPA - very nice DIPA

Wicked Weed - Tabernacle Crush Guess an Ale? - sample was very good

Wicked Weed - Berry Pi'd Fruit Beer - ok not my style though

NoDa - Cocoa Loco Porter - Very good

Foothills - Jade IPA - bomber in the fridge

Coronado - Idiot IPA - good/very good

Terrapin - Hopsecutioner - good

Westbrook - IPA - good

Westbrook - White Thai Witbier- meh

Sea Dog - Blue Paw Wild Blueberry Fruit - not good. Lots and lots of blueberry though.

I believe several of the Unknowns you listed were special batches for National IPA day but I live in Charlotte and would be glad to help you out.

Yeah that's what I did

Get an empty winebox with the little dividers

I'd reccomended individually bagging each bottle in a ziplock and fill any voids with bubble wrap or something

Thats what I do too now. I used to ship from my UPS store, and sometimes theyd ask whats in the box and I always said auto parts and repair manuals. FedEx has never asked.

Bourbon County Barleywine 2013

Cantillon 1900 Grand Cry 2009
That is a hell of a day of drinking. Did you have a favorite of the bunch?
Obviously, the Rare and Cantillon were world class Go #### Yourself beers.

I was really surprised at how well the Bramble has aged. Nobody wanted to finish their pour of that. Just great to smell and taste. My official review was: Chocolate covered raspberry soaked in bourbon coated in blackberry jam and dropped into your favorite stout.

Framboise for a Cure is always incredible as well.

The 2013 Bourbon County Barleywine is really hitting it's stride right now. I was a little disappointed in it fresh.

Surly Five was ####### great too. Vinous and complex. That was a fun one because it was a gift from the guy who came to town to visit back when he hated sours. He got them at release to give to friends who liked sours. Now he loves sours so we opened it for him as a surprise.

Alpine Baby Face is a 4.5% version of Nelson and it is ####### phenomenal. Need to go get more growlers of that before it's gone.

Just put up a few new fence panels in my backyard...it feels like I just got out of a pool, I'm completely soaked with sweat...this Westy Gose won't last 5 minutes.

I'm super jealous. Those are some truly epic beers. I also loved the Bourbon County Bramble and Russian River's Framboise for a Cure. I would love to get my hands on a Bourbon County Rare someday.

Cycle cranked up the ABV on Crank...its now at 7% ABV, and its as good as ever but with more of a kick. Just housed a Crowler that was filled 3 hours ago.

Next up: Cuvée Des Jacobins Rouge, one of my all time favorite beers let alone sours.

Lacto Guava Grove by CCB. Might have let this go a week long...the sweet spot is 4-6 weeks IMO...this is a little boozy, which for an 8.6% beer shouldn't happen. That said, its still solid.

Back when I was shipping, "collectible glassware" was my FedEx/UPS go-to. They'd usually give the box a little shake but as long as they can't determine there's liquid inside it was always good to go.

One time I had used a box a few too many times and the UPS counter guy said it wasn't safe and asked if he could open it. He saw what was inside and basically gave me the box back with an apology that he can't ship beer. I bought some packing supplies, repacked the box in my car, and drove to a different UPS location and shipped it there without a problem.

Green Flash Natura Morta w/Plum

Hmmm... it's sour, some plum, expected to like it because of the price but, odd off taste throughout... disappointed

Ballast Point Calm Before the Storm

A light coffee beer, nice, refreshing like a sweet vanilla iced coffee but beer, another homerun for BP...

I have to skip the Bacon & Beer sour fest later this month, but picked up a ticket for a fest in St Pete in October. Pretty impressive brewery list so far.

Pretty good. Proceeds to the Tony Gwynn museum. My favorite baseball player bar none. Guy was one in a million. One of my favorite life experiences was getting in a pickup hoops game with him Gill Byrd and Stan Humphries at a random park in Poway one random day. Tony dominated that one. Tip of the glass to #19.

Just finished my last White Oak Jai Alai, and am now having an Invasion Pale Ale. Sticking with local stuff tonight.

Any NC guys that wanna ship me some now bottled Wicked Weed Freak and Pernicious, and want some Florida beer in exchange, let me know!

Man you could have had it fresh in growlers...I even asked! BTW Glutenous Minimus is better than Pernicious IMO.

Yeah I know...but I really want some of the first bottle run...and I refuse to believe a gluten free beer is better than a gluten...filled beer. Lol

Proof White Oak Citra Pale Ale - Really nice pale, almost has a sweetness to it. Thanks Wing!
I missed this post. I wish you could have had it fresher...2 weeks is really pushing it for hoppy Crowlers, IMO. Glad you liked it though, I was pleasantly surprised I liked it as much as I did...its not as good as WOJA but its good...Proof is a pretty good brewery.

I'm going to heal my liver on the rice diet courtesy of Maurile in Otis diet thread. So you guys keep up the good fight. I sign off with an elder pliny.

Yeah it was very good, definitely not as good as WOJA but it would do in a pinch.

New Glaurus Two Women

Not bad....was not a fan of the Yokel though and still prefer Moon Man and Spotted Cow out of there.

New Glarus is one of the best breweries, I don't want to talk about it much because they are crazy awesome.

And it's in 'Sconnie so it hurts that they are so quite awesome.

Summit is still better.
