What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

Was a bit limited to where I went and didn't like the hotel's beer choices here in DC, so walked down the street for three four packs.

Chose 3 I can't find on the west coast--Founders Double Trouble, Ommegang Quadruple, and one I'd never heard of, Great Lakes Chillwave DIPA. All amazingly good, but the Chillwave was my biggest surprise.

Chillwave is very good. It used to be called Alchemy Hour until a year or two ago, if you were familiar with that one. I think the label is the same but they had to change the name due to copyright issues.

PW Scarlet Betta - really interesting, almost like a sour. Definitely has the the citrus PW DIPAs typically have but you get the raspberries and a lot of tart. I really like this.

A bunch of Three Palms beers and a few Angry Chair beers. Might crack a 10% Coppertail Brews Banner DIPA...I'm a little skeered.

Anyone doing Zwanze Day this weekend?
Either too expensive or too much a #### show around me.
After the service fees, it was $25 for 1 6 oz pour of Zwanze, 1 6 oz pour of either Gueuze or Kriek, and a glass. A little pricey for sure but not extraordinarily so. I've heard of bars in other cities selling tickets for $70-80. This is my first Zwanze Day....they've had it in Toronto for a few years but I've never made the trip. I'll document the day here.

Zwanze Day 2015 at Blue Monk, Buffalo, NY.

Parameters: Tickets were sold online like 3 weeks ago. 140 tickets sold out in approximately 1 hour. I have a ticket along with 2 friends. The bar will open as normal at 11 AM with a normal lunch service - the bar is open to the public. On tap at 11 AM will be Cantillon Iris Grand Cru and Cantillon Cuvee Saint Gilloise, along with whatever happens to be on their other 30 taps. Gueuze and Kriek will be available from 11-3 for ticketholders for their 1 free pour. Zwanze will be poured at 3 PM for the worldwide toast. Gueuze and Kriek will become available to the public at 3 PM.

9:21 AM - drove by the bar on the way home from the farmer's market. There is a line of 3 people out front, likely out-of-towners. The smattering of other large beer forums seems to indicate that there is a decent contingent making the drive from Pennsylvania and across NY state coming into town expecting bottle shares. I don't know that I'd be comfortable bringing my own bottles to a bar I've never been to, but that's just me. Hopefully everything is cool. I will not be bringing bottles to share....not a big fan of shares unless I know/trust the other people involved.

That's not too bad. Like seeing a Cantillon 375ml on a bottle list for $25 and you get a glass. 6oz is a nice healthy pour too. It has bounced around San Diego. This year the deal is around the same value as yours. $45 gets you four 6oz pours (Rose, Kriek, Gueuze) and a glass. Justifiable, but $100 (me and the lady) out of the wallet before noon without food makes it less so.

I really don't get the deal with bottle shares at bars. The worst part is these beer geeks feel entitled to be allowed to do it. I got kicked out of a bar once for bringing my own stuff in. Felt like an idiot. Of course you can't bring your own booze into a bar. That's what they do. Sell you booze. Of course, I was 16 and the bottle was a 40 of Mickey's, but the point is the same.

From the Orlando Zwanze venue:

$5 for a 4oz pour, and pay for pour from the following kegs:

- Cantillon Kriek

- Cantillon Iris Grand Cru

- Cantillon Rosé de Gambrinus

- Cantillon Vigneronne

And we'll have a limited number of bottles of Grand Cru Bruocsella for purchase.

I decided to go to the Shelton Bros fest next month instead, where I'll be able to sample a crap ton more beers.

Well, the 4 pack of Matilda is gone, and the ribs have another hour and a half or so to go -- what to do? Don't feel like "shelf" beer, so I'm eyeing my only remaining bottle of Side Project Saison du Fermier. When the brett mood hits you...

Of course when this one is gone, I'll be all ripped up before 6:00 LOL, but WTH.

Shorts Ermagerdness IPA

Also question regarding aging beers. I bought a Stone Enjoy After awhile back...can I store it on its side on a wine rack or does it need to be stored upright? Or doesn't really matter

I store beer upright -- you don't keep it for decades like wine, so I don't think that you need to keep it down on the cork. Never had an issue personally. I don't think that storing it on it's side will hurt it, either, unless it's something bottle conditioned that you want to decant while pouring.

I am ####### ####faced
Just ate a rack of ribs, baked potato, and three ears of corn on the cob to try to mitigate my wastedness -- now I'm just tired as ####. Gonna power through and uncork a Trappist Quad and start a fire -- think maybe a '12 La Trappe or a '13 Rochefort -- it's in the high 50s here in NWI and a big desert beer feels right.

We are just getting to the best football games of the day, you need to power through.

Deschutes in Michigan is nice though

I got the fresh squeezed

They had a few $15 specialties too...Mirror Mirror, some XXVII stuff or whatever but I decided to pass

If any if those are good let me know and maybe I'll check back

Hangin in like a champ -- even convinced the wife to start drinking with me. Fire roarin, kids making s'mores, went with La Trappe -- mmmm... liquid banana pudding (wife drinking Zombie Dust -- at least it's not effing Shandy). Gonna freaking hate it tomorrow morning methinks LOL.

A bunch of low abv during the day (War Bird, Citra Session) and then CopperTail Jenga Smash (thanks Wing!) and now 3Fs Battle Priest. Don't plan on slowing down anytime soon!

Pretty sure I can't stand up anymore. Might need to sleep in a chair on the deck. Wife yelled at me for pissing off the deck a little bit ago LOL.

I have an XXVI and XXVII. Haven't tried them yet, but I am sure they will be good.

As strange as it might sound, the best beer I had yesterday was probably the Almanac Pumpkin Sour. Give that a try if you find it.

Zwanze was fine but nothing earth shattering.

Todd the Axe Man...wow...easily one of the best IPAs I've had. Hawks, I owe you big time...
Had one of these last night too. I agree, it's great.

Thinking Lizard King and home brew for the game today. Also, Neckar is in town so will likely be watching that after the game. Ribs going on the smoker. Going to be a rough one ahead I think.
