What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

Just accidentally ran in to Denver Oktoberfest after GABF en route to a dive bar. That was nuts. Had a killer time at Star Bar. I love this town.

Also, awesome to meet Buck and Aristocrat

Community Beer Works The Bringer of Nuclear Fire (imperial stout with ancho chiles)

Community Beer Works/12 Gates Collaboration ALS Double IPA

Community Beer Works/Old First Ward Collaboration Spiced Amber

Community Beer Works That IPA

14th Star A-Dog Brown Ale

Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest

Today is the only local beer festival worth attending. Definitely not GABF but the VIP list has some solid selections on it. Last year they had a bunch of Hill Farm and special one-offs from local breweries, so I suspect the list will grow in size. Most looking forward to -

  • Cantillon Kriek 100% Lambic Bio - Lambic Style-Fruit (Brussels, Belgium)
  • Cantillon Geuze 100% Lambic Bio - Lambic blend (Brussels, Belgium)
  • Cascade Blueberry - Sour Ale (Portland, Oregon)
  • 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze - Lambic Style-Geuze (Beersel, Belgium)
  • 3 Fonteinen Oude Kriek - Lambic Style-Fruit (Brussels, Belgium)
  • Boulevard Brewing Co. Saison Brett 2015 - Saison (Kansas City, Missouri)
  • Ithaca Beer Co. Saison D'Or - Saison (Ithaca, New York)
  • Founders Brewing Co. Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) - Imperial Stout (Grand Rapids, Michigan)
  • Allagash Cuvee D'Indistrial - American Wild Ale (Portland, Maine)
  • Allagash Farm to Face - American Wild Ale w/ Peaches (Portland, Maine)
  • Pipeworks Ninja vs. Unicorn - Double IPA (Chicago, IL)
  • Prairie BOMB! - Imperial Stout (Krebs, Oklahoma)
  • Blackbird Buffalo Bluegrass Kentucky Barrel aged hard cider w/ cherries (Barker, NY)
  • Big Ditch Double Dry hopped Hayburner w/ Passionfruit - (Buffalo!)

How is it this year? I was disappointed last year.
It wasn't good. One of the few craft beers I've opened and not finished.
Not good compared to last year? Or just not good overall? I'm not much of a fan of it in general.
I've only had last year's. It has/had a great reputation as the best pumpkin brew out there. I went on a quest in Virginia to find it. It just wasn't good and I shared it with a couple other beer snobs and we didn't finish it.

Opening night of GABF on Thursday night was great. The festival ran really smoothly and the logistics of entry were better than ever. I had the honor of being served Ocelot beers by Sebowski himself (who generously lent me his glass after I somehow misplaced my glass during a port-a-potty stop). I was really impressed with all of Ocelot's beers. The Two Lost Souls IPA was fantastic, as it featured two of my favorite hops -- citra and mosaic. Sebowski is bringing some serious west coast IPAs to the east coast. Here were some of my standout beers from GABF last night:

Beachwood BBQ Rye like an Eagle imperial brown rye ale aged in rye whiskey barrels

Brew Kettle Kitka Coconut Chocolate Stout

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov Russian imperial stout

Columbus Bodhi imperial IPA

Fat Heads Hop Juju imperial IPA

Firestone Walker Anniversary XVIII blended barrel-aged ale

Firestone Walker Feral One blended wild ale aged in oak barrels

Foothills Bourbon Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate imperial stout with cocoa nibs aged in bourbon barrels

Funky Buddha Morning Wood imperial Maple Bacon Coffee Porter aged in bourbon barrels

Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla Rye imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels with vanilla beans

Great Divide Barrel-aged Yeti imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels

J Wakefield El Jefe Hefeweizen with coconut

Ocelot Two Lost Souls IPA with citra and mosaic hops

Russian River Beautification spontaneous wild ale aged in oak barrels

Societe the Pupil IPA

The Rare Barrel Becoming golden sour ale aged in oak barrels with boysenberries

The Rare Barrel Home, Sour Home golden sour aged in oak barrels with peaches, vanilla beans, and cinnamon

The Rare Barrel Ensorcelled dark sour aged in oak barrels with raspberries

Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee

Weyerbacher D'Tango Unchained Belgian dark ale aged in bourbon barrels with cherries

I also went to a Casey and Side Project tapping at Freshcraft before the festival and had some insane beers:

Side Project Fencerow wild ale with black raspberries (one of my favorite sours that I've ever had, the black raspberry character was explosive on your palate)

Side Project Derivation Blend #1 imperial stout aged in maple bourbon barrels (ridiculous - an incredible blend of dark chocolate, bourbon, maple, and smoky charred oak that had tons of barrel character but drank remarkably smooth for its 15% ABV)

Casey Blackberry Fruit Stand (also amazing, Troy Casey is making some incredible sours out in Glenwood Springs)
Side Project is outrageous -- pretty much every beer I've tried from them isn't jst good, but phenomenal. Just spectacular.

3 years ago it was good. 2 years ago it was fantastic. But I don't think it's wrong to describe last year as nasty.

Flying Dog's The Gourd Standard (Pumpkin IPA). After drinking this, I think there is a reason this combination is not a common one. Regretting the 6-pack.

Prairie Brett C. -- wow! First time I've had this one, hugely recommended. Big Citra in the nose and in the taste, just enough brett funk without taking over. Dry, huge champagne-like carbonation, extremely crushable for 8.1% -- if you are a Citra and / or brett fan this is an absolute must try. Even at $10 / 16 oz. I'm gonna head back and clean out the store next week. Top 5 saison for me for sure. Great, great beer.

This was on too! Forgot about this. Solid.

Also Prairie Funky Cold Mosaic and some Long Trail Smash or something like that.

Anyone had Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Porter?

Described as: Intensified coffee porter is a big, chocolately ale aged in bourbon barrels with El Salvador coffee beans roasted by Blue Bottle Coffee. Brave yourself for complex notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, berries, and dried fruit!

Went local.

Hailstorm Pacific Rim west coast pale ale (formerly known as Captain Serious). Will save the rest of these for the Bears debacle tomorrow.

Now onto a growler of Hailstorm Prairie Madness IPA with mandarina, hull melon, and hallertau blanc hops.

### Clown Coffee Toasted Coconut Stout.
This is 1 of our local breweries 80s. Did you like this. Very high alcohol content but the beer seems to lack carbonation to me. Almost kind of flat.
I liked it a lot and didn't find it lacking in carbonation. Great flavor for a beer I had never heard of and couldn't find much info on.

The Denver Rare Beer Tasting event on Friday was pretty incredible. I only had General Admission, not VIP, tickets to this event, so I was nervous that all the best beers would be gone by the time that I got into the event. But it turned out that basically every beer was pouring late into the event, and I was able to get as many pours as I wanted of everything. Hell, Goose Island brought four pony kegs of Bourbon County Prop. I lost track of how many pours of Prop I drank. Here were the standouts for me:

Funky Buddha BA Snowed In imperial Porter aged in bourbon barrels with coconut, chocolate, and coffee (this was one of my favorite beers ever - absolutely incredible)

Goose Island Proprietor's Bourbon County Brand Stout (2014) imperial stout aged in rye whiskey barrels with cocoa nibs, cassia bark, coconut water, and panela sugar (also incredible)

Cascade White Raspberry wild blonde ale aged in a white wine barrel with white raspberries

Crooked Stave Port Barrel-Aged Nightmare on Brett dark sour ale

Crooked Stave Nightcap burgundy sour ale aged in bourbon barrels with sour cherries, cacao nibs, and coffee

Central Waters Black Gold imperial stout aged for three years in bourbon barrels

Deschutes Collage blended ale aged in rye whiskey, cognac, sherry, Pinot noir, bourbon, and oak barrels

Firestone Walker XVIII Anniversary barrel-aged blended ale

Firestone Walker Sucaba barleywine aged in bourbon barrels

Hoppin' Frog Barrel-Aged B.O.R.I.S. VAN WINK imperial stout aged in Pappy Van Winkle barrels

Lost Abbey Cable Car blonde sour ale

NoDa Bourbon Barrel & Vanilla Bean Olde Voyager barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with vanilla beans

Stone Xocoveca Charred mocha stout aged in bourbon barrels with pasilla peppers, coffee, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla

Wicked Weed Dark Arts imperial stout aged in tequila barrels with Brett and espresso

Boston Beer Samuel Adams Utopias barrel-aged blended ale

The best thing I drank all day was probably a 50/50 blend of Bourbon County Prop and Funky Buddha's BA Snowed In. That was insane.

Grabbed a case of Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest tonight when we did the Costco run.
Yeah, these are goin down waaaaay too easily as I smoke a pile of pork steaks and watch the games. Gonna have to chill if I hope to make it through to the eclipse tonight, that is if there isn't thick cloud cover blocking it here.

I was gonna head down to FB for the Snowed In bottle release, thinking it was Oct 8th...just realized last night that its actually being released Oct 6th, and I won't be home from out of town until later that night. Dammit.

Found a couple of 2014 Lakefront Imperial Pumpkin (aged in brandy barrels with vanilla) in the fridge. I don't think there is a better pumpkin beer out there. Liquid pumpkin pie.

That's probably my favorite pumpkin beer that I've ever had too. Nice find.

Started off some MNF festivities here with Firestone Opal. Pretty meh, but it washed down nicely with a bowl of homemade chili. Very cold this beer reminded me of a cross between Mickey's Big Mouth that had been left in the sun then re-refrigerated and a Pabst. :) It did open up some as it lost it's deep chill and was just cold. The chili helped a lot.

It used to be hard to find and now it is everywhere. I wonder if it is mass produced now and changed the quality.

Elysian Punkaccino is the way to go or Night Owl.

The GABF Members Only session on Saturday afternoon was fantastic as well. Thanks again to the Aristocrat for hooking me up with tickets from all of his hard work (and hard drinking) as a group leader of the GABF volunteer staff. On Thursday night, my GABF game plan was largely focused rare barrel-aged stouts and barrel-aged sours that I thought would kick early, so I planned a run on world class IPAs to start off Saturday. I also hit the Midwest, Mountain, and Pacific Northwest regions, which I largely ignored on Thursday night just because I ran out of time. Here were some standouts for me from the Saturday session:

Barley Brown's Pallet Jack IPA

Barley Brown's Forklift imperial IPA

Bend Brewing Salmonberry Sour ale with salmonberries

Bend Brewing Ching Ching Berliner weisse with pomegranate and hibiscus

Black Project Blueberry Dreamland spontaneous sour ale aged in red wine barrels with blueberries

Boneyard Notorious triple IPA

Breakside IPA

Brew Kettle White Rajah IPA

Cannonball Creek Not Mindbender imperial IPA

Cannonball Creek Project Alpha #4 IPA

Comrade Fresh Hop Superpower IPA

Fat Head's Hop Juju imperial IPA

Fat Head's Midnight Moonlight black IPA

Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee Brand Stout

J. Wakefield Miami Madness Berliner weisse with mango, guava, and passion fruit

La Cumbre Elevated IPA

La Cumbre Dank Project IPA

La Cumbre Fievre D'Abricot saison with apricots

Lawson's Sip of Sunshine IPA (although, honestly, I was kind of disappionted based on my high expectations from its BA ratings)

Melvin 2x4 imperial IPA

Melvin IPA

Melvin CHCHCHCH-Cherry Bomb ale with cherries

New Glarus Vintage 2015 sour gueuze aged in oak barrels

Revolution Mosaic Hero IPA

Rhinegeist Barrel-Aged Mastadon Belgain dark strong ale aged in red wine and whiskey barrels

Rhinegeist Sherry Ink Russian imperial stout aged in sherry barrels

Sun King Batch 666: Sympathy for the Devil Belgian black ale aged in bourbon barrels

Sun King Cherry Busey barrel-aged oud bruin with Montmorency cherries

Three Floyds Zombie Dust pale ale

Three Floyds Permanent Funeral imperial IPA

Upland Pawpaw golden sour with pawpaw fruit

Upland Sour Reserve golden sour ale aged in oak barrels

Wicked Weed Red Angel sour ale with raspberries

Wicked Weed Pernicious IPA

Wicked Weed Freak of Nature imperial IPA

Following the GABF afternoon session, I had a number of other outstanding beers at Falling Rock and Freshcraft with Sebowski and the Ocelot crew:

Casey No Name: Balaton Cherries wild saison aged in oak barrels with cherries

Casey Family Preserves Montmorency wild saison aged in oak barrels with cherries

Casey Dry-Hopped Oak Theory wild ale

Firestone Walker SLOambic wild ale aged in oak barrels with olallieberries

Firestone Walker Sour Opal wild ale aged in oak barrels

Evil Twin Cognac Jesus imperial stout aged in cognac barrels

I had a great time hanging out with Sebowski, his girl, his brother, and the rest of the Ocelot crew. They are a really fun and nice group of people who are making some outstanding beers. I'm really glad that you guys enjoyed your time in Denver for GABF. I hope you come back and visit sometime!

Overall, this past week was an unbelievable beer drinking experience all around. It's absolutely ridiculous how many world class beers that I was able to drink this week. I think going to Denver for GABF week should be a "bucket list" event for anyone who truly loves beer. If you are interested in coming out next year, let me know and I would be happy to help you plan an epic weekend.

Hey buck,

What did you think of the foothills sexuel chocolate? Say compared to yeti chocolate?
I thought that the Foothills Barrel-Aged Sexual Chocolate was fantastic. The version that I had at the Denver Rare Beer Tasting had been aged in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels, which added a fantastic bourbon barrel character that put it well above any non-bourbon-barrel-aged chocolate stouts for me, but I'm a fiend for bourbon barrel-aged beers. I wish Great Divide would put their Espresso and Chocolate Yeti in bourbon barrels, rather than just plain oak barrels.

I completely agree regarding Side Project. The Derivation and Fencerow were both top five beers for me in a GABF week in which I had an incredibly wide variety of amazing beers. I would love to get my hands on some more Side Project beers to try. I've hung out with Cory King, the brewer and co-owner of Side Project, a couple times in Denver at tap takeovers. He is remarkably nice and humble for a brewer with his accolades.
