What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

I just had a brief moment of inspiration (along with the perspiration that will come along with seeing it to reality). We should have a master index of the beers in this thread.

I'll try to catalog all these in the 100+ pages, but obviously it'll take me a while. If anyone wants to volunteer for a range of pages in the thread let me know. Otherwise, I'll just plug along in my spare time and get the index posted whenever it gets does (or even if it does). Was thinking we could possibly link to either a review of the beer here in the index, or to BA reviews. Or both maybe. We'll see.

Don't worry, moments of sheer insight are few and far between for me. It won't happen again. However, I am happy that the score in this regard for Me vs Furley is 1-0.
I guess if that were to happen, you'd want the list to be in the first post for easy reference. So the list will need to be sent to Wilked.
Or I'll just start my own beer thread and go from there.F'n wilked!

But he's no F'n bakes!

Beers on the wild side star in Radical Beer Open

May 22, 2006 - Beers from 10 different states captured the 12 awards handed out in the first Radical Beer Open, a contest born to highlight the fact that some of the most innovative beers in the world are brewed in America.

Only California had multiple winners, as Russian River in Santa Rosa took first and second in medium-strength beers and Le Woody from Pizza Port in Solana Beach won the gold in the wild category.

"We hope that 'radical' doesn't scare away beer drinkers, because compared to the mainstream/international lagers that still dominate beer sales even a full flavored 4.6% witbier will seem radical to most," said Stan Hieronymus of the Dukes of Ale, an Albuquerque homebrew club that organized the competition.

Certified beer judges and professional brewers judged 60 beers blind before picking three winners in each of four categories. The book "Radical Brewing," by Randy Mosher, provided the inspiration. In it, Mosher writes: "The only requirement for being a radical brewer is to pursue the art with passion," and ". . . beer is an art form, a gastronomic treasure, a political act, a mystical ritual, a food, and a fundamental human craft."

Armed with those somewhat vague guidelines, the judges picked from beers that are sometimes called "extreme" and other times "to style." The winning beers in the 5.1-7.5% abv category nicely illustrate the radical nature of the contest.

First was Temptation from Russian River Brewing.

"Is it beer, or is it wine?" the brewery asks on the back of the bottle. "'Aged in French oak wine barrels for twelve months with distinct characteristics of fruit and subtle oak' sounds more like a description of wine than beer. But, of course, Temptation is indeed beer. Actually, Temptation is a Blonde Ale Fermented with a special strain of yeast, then aged in French oak chardonnay barrels. Flavors of wine and oak absorb into the brew throughout twelve months of aging. During this aging process, a secondary fermentation occurs using a yeast strain disliked by most brewers and winemakers called Brettanomyces. The 'Bret' gives Temptation intriguing characteristics and a pleasant sourness. Temptation is re-fermented in the bottle to create its carbonation - a process commonly used to make fine champagne and sparkling wine."

Second was Supplication, another of the "14 stages of 'tion'" beers from Russian River. The brown ale is aged in Pinot Noir wine barrels for one year with sour cherries and three "wild" yeast strains.

Bronze winner Cerise Cassée ("Broken Cherry') from Cambridge Brewing Co. in Cambridge, Mass., begins with a 100% sour mash for three days. After primary fermentation, brewer Will Meyers adds 300 pounds of sour cherries and ignites a second fermentation with a Belgian abbey ale yeast. A third fermentation with several strains of Brettanomyces lasts nine months in French oak Pinot Noir barrels.

What's important, of course, is what the beer tastes like. Cerise Cassée certainly challenged one of the judges, who said "this one you would have to drink through but it would be worth the effort."

I'd just like to take a moment to thank wilked and congratulate him on his beer thread. His little baby turned 2 today. :excited:

wilked, none of us would be what we are today (alcoholics) without you, so thanks!

:suds:
Thanks GB. My greatest creation, and the gift that keeps on giving. I have some high quality brews in the fridge that just might have to be consumed prior to the Radiohead concert tonight
Easily one of my favorites. Saw them at the Wiltern in the late 90's. Of the countless concerts I have been to, that was top 5. Me 'n a buddy walked right up and sat like 5th row and torched one. Kind of lost my mind for a bit. AWESOME. Look forward to the review...

 Ok, this guy appears to be in the Atlanta area. I MUST become his friend somehow.
He is KP on the Beer Advocate boards. I actually met him when he took a trip up to Asheville. He was kind enough to bring up some now defunct Dogwood Barleywine and Imperial Porter. Really good stuff. Apparently the former brewer of Dogwood is going to be the brewmaster at an Atlanta brewpub (Embers in Alpharetta). As far as meeting him, they are having a meetup at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur on June 11th.

I hate you. I would do filthy things to drink Supplication on draught...especially since its now extinct. For the life of me I can not find La Folie. And since you are here....no updates on Pizza Port bottling yet. But I've heard they should be showing up in stores any week now.

Excellent. I need to proof read my reviews better, I had a lot of spelling errors in there.

:hot: i will catalog every beer mentioned in the FFA. top that!

Excellent. Looks like my plan worked perfectly to get Furley to do all the work. I mean.......betcha you won't do that, Furley.

Bells Oberon
how is this?kinda debating on whether or not to pick some up when i find it.
Just get some, how bad can it be?I got started drinking it back in oh about 1993. First had it in the basement of Bilbo's at Western Michigan University. It was called Solsun. Had the same label with the sun on it. They lost lawsuit and had to change the name to Oberon.

I swear, then, there was orange essence floating in it. It was really good. Of course beer changes over time, esp. as they become more commercialized - made in larger batches.

Anyway the sun on the label sums it up. It is about the lightest beer you can get from them. I don't know if I could describe it. GO BUY IT!

Now that I think about it, the RR brews were in bottles. Most of the beers there were draft, but there was one table pouring samples from bottles, including these.

Grilled some chicken, did a quick 8 mile bike ride, and just popped open my last 2003 Alaskan Smoked Porter. This brew ages so incredibly well it's scary. Especially for a twist-off. Nary a hint of cardboard - just oily, silky smoky malt goodness.

Yes, I saw the thread about that. I'll be in NYC then though. Gotta make it to the Brickstore Pub one day soon.

Followed the prter up with an Olde Towne Pale Ale - interesting brew - then my last Newport Storm Alyssa double bown. Almost like a Newcastle condensed with more black patent malt and bitterness, or in other words, not at all like Newcastle. <g>

Need something to follow that one up.

Just got back from the Stuffed Sandwich dinner. Drank a lot of English beers, but the highlight of the night was a 1988 Youngs Winter Warmer. I was really surprised...for an 18 year old beer it held up remarkably well.

I didn't find the ASP until about 6 months ago. I've got quite a few squirreled away now, but I haven't had the pleasure of tasting a properly aged bottle yet.

Stout/Porter Night

Drakes Imperial Stout

Alaskan Smoked Porter

Rasputin Imperial Russian Stout

Rogue Chocolate Stout

Rogue Shalespear Stout

 Great news!

Great lunch today. Went to Town Hall to get Gator's growler and had Masala on cask along with a Saison. Oh yeah, I had a good burger for lunch too.

So Anheuser Busch is now making a Belgian style white.

Too little, too late guys.

Spring Heat Spiced Wheat
Gotta like the first review.
All i can say is that this brew was cute,it didn’t smell like an AB brew,it didn’t look like one,the flavor actually had some orange peel and no cheap adjunct flavor or aftertaste. Any other brewery its a train wreck, for AB its surprisingly good

Brouwerij Westvleteren Reveals a New Beer Sales System

An Exclusive Interview with Brother Joris of the St-Sixtus Trappist Abbey

Link

Feature Article by email ChuckCook / 05-31-2006

Ever since June 2005, when RateBeer (a rating-centric website for beer geeks) touted Westvleteren 12 (considered the "holy grail" amongst über-beer geeks) as the #1 rated beer in the world *, the monks of the Sint-Sixtusabdij van Westvleteren, West Flanders, Belgium have been inundated with requests for media interviews, to produce more beer, to raise their beer prices, and many other things. Things which are unwanted annoyances for the monks, who simply wish to lead their lives in the quest for finding God.

Perhaps the most significant problem has been the large traffic jams which often occur on the small country roads when the monks offer a batch of beer for sale at the St-Sixtus Abbey drive-through sales point. "The long lines of cars on the small roads here, with people waiting to purchase crates of our beer, is a problem for local people, and also requires the presence of police to make certain everything is ok," Brother Joris, the monk in charge of the brewery, told me this past week.

He continued: "In the future, we have a plan which we hope will remedy this problem. Instead of selling on a first come, first served basis, as we do now, people will have to call the "beerphone" to find out if a batch is going on sale soon, and, if so, we will tell them the day and the hour they may come to pick up their crates (assuming all the crates are not spoken for when the person calls.) We will be able to spread the sale of a batch of beer over several days of one week, instead of selling out in one or two days. This should help alleviate the traffic problems which now exist."

"The number of crates allotted per car will still be limited, as it is now, to ensure that as many customers as possible can purchase our beer. Also, there will only be one type of beer on sale at the same time, whether it is Blond, 8 or 12."

As to when this will take effect, Brother Joris said, "This new system will begin on September 25th. From that date, it will no longer be possible to buy crates without a reservation. The registration of the customers will be done by means of the license-plate number of their vehicle. Occasional passers-by will have to visit the shop at In de Vrede if they wish to purchase our beer. The sales system will not change at the café."

How will this affect the local people who buy Westvleteren beer at the Abbey sales point? "For the usual customers, we hope this system will result in a serious reduction in the amount of time spent waiting in line, and also that purchasers will be happy with the knowledge that there will be beer available for them when they arrive." Brother Joris commented.

Just to clarify a point about the position of the monks (re: the export of their beers), they are opposed to the re-selling of their brews, wherever it may occur. It could be within Belgium, or Outer Mongolia, for that matter. The monks are not really concerned with people who purchase beer for personal use at the In de Vrede café or Abbey sales point, then carry it home to share with friends, or perhaps to trade for some other rare beer. Therefore, if you make the pilgrimage to Westvleteren and bring beer home with you to the U.S. or other country, there is no need to feel guilty about doing so. So long as you buy the beer at one of the two official sales-points, and don't re-sell the beer, it is not against their wishes.

Went to a Beer tasting the other day
I don't know if it is good or bad that, despite the blurry photo, I can immediately recognize five of those beers.
Ommegang Abbey, Hennepin, Three Philosphers, and Witte.Allagash Triple and Grand Cru.

The third from the right is a Lost Coast Great White Beer (I think).

The first one on the right might be a Pranqster.

The only ones I don't know are the fourth and fifth ones from the left, but I am guessing they are belgian style.

I didn't even know they made Belgian style ales. I'm still ticked that even though they have opened up the beer laws here that I still haven't seen any Hop Ottin.

Certainly. I like the double more than the triple (but I really not fond of triples)

Had the double on tap at Mahar's a few weeks back. Pretty damned solid effort.Starting off with the Old Town Amber that potsie sent in the BIF. Pretty decent - has a slight vegetal thing going on that I can't quite figure out, but would love to try this fresh on cask. Would be an excellent session brew that way.

Need to find something to follow it up, but nothing's appropriate in the beer fridge. Wait... there IS an Arrogant ******* in there, come to think of it... bless you, potsie!! NEXT!!! :banned:

This guy knows his stuff!!! I love Bells Oberon, I have also been drinking it since it was Solsun, it has changed over the years, but still a great beer none the less.

I'm putting away a few IPA's that I brewed tonight... Good stuff :banned:
