What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

Hey Heckmann, I see you lurking...few homebrew questions.

Does malt extract go bad? I have a bag and can that have been around for a few years. Planned on making one gallon batches with them and never did.

Whats the best way to use herbs, specifically mint? I'd like a recognizable mint flavor with out being over bearing.
I was just on briefly last night - spotty/slow wi-fi at the hotel, and a belly full of burnt ends from Arthur Bryant's had me kinda sleepy.Anyway, the dry malt should be fine, assuming it's still dry. The syrup I've heard will darken some with age, but should also make decent beer - just may not be the color you're expecting. I wouldn't expect any other problems.

For herbs, you definitely want to minimize (actually avoid) boiling, so you could drop them in after you finish the boil. That will keep volatiles from being driven off with steam. You could even try to "dry hop" with them - put them in the fermenter after fermentation is mostly complete.

Another technique I've heard if is mixing the herbs with a small amount of vodka, letting it soak for a few days, and then adding the liquid to the beer.

I haven't actually brewed with herbs, so I can't say which of these would work best. What are you thinking for the mint beer? I kicked around the idea of a chocolate-mint stout once, but never brewed it.
Other herbs can be mixed with vodka as well.

what can one expect to pay for a 12oz bottle of Unibroue's La Fin du Monde?

local is carrying them for $1.79 a bottle. is this high? low? average?

Never seen it in a 12oz, but that doesn't sound like a bad price at all.

Sounds like a decent deal. I've never bought it as a single, but 4 packs of 12oz bottles go for $7.99 usually around here, IIRC.

Finishing off a St Bernardus Abt 12.
:hot: thoughts?
I wish I had another. Easy drinking, sipping beer. Smooth. Lots of flavors going on. If Westy is better, I really gotta find one.
 essentially the same thing i said.. that is one mighty fine beer. as much as i like the Fantome Saison (and it's a LOT) i liked this one more.

freaking great beer.

this a beer worth getting?the way my local works i can get a 6 pack of these for $7.69

they don't check the bottles.. they just ring the 6er. :bag:

i can get ####### ##### which is $9.99 a 6-pack, for $7.69 if i just switch the bottles to a different 6-pack box.

If any of youse make it out to Monterey, look up Peter B's.

Hidden little gem of a brewpub.

Back of the Portola Plaza Hotel, in the main plaza at the foot of Fisherman's Wharf.

Actually, food and ambience are, eh, but the brews are top notch.

No. No bottling (yet).

Excellent IPA and 7-Malt Stout.

(Had one of each after work).

Now at home sipping an Acme IPA.

Cheers and Happy Friday Y'all!

:banned:

The DFH 90min is great. First time trying it and will be trading for it more...

ETA: I love the label, ...It's balanced by a ridiculous amount of English two-row barley.

:lmao:

Tonight I'm drinking on some New Castle  . Haven't had it in awhile. A month ago, i was drinking Red Dog beer from 40 ounce bottles that i smuggled onto the plane in my check-in bag coming home from Vegas. I know a place that sells it there on the way from the airport to the Strip. Anyone else like/hate/remember this beer/malt liquor? It's cheap as hell and fairly smooth. But, i cannot find a single place in Los Angeles that sells it.

thought they stopped making Red Dog in the 90s.you might've wanted to check the dates on those beers.

Currently drinking one of the Mendocino hawk beers.  Not sure which.
Red?White?

Eye of the?
It would actually require me to get off my ### to know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it the Eye of the Hawk. None are too impressing. I gave it another chance at the beer store this evening. I should have grabbed something else.

Having a Green Flash Ruby Red ale. Thought about shipping it in the BIF but after tasting it I've decided it won't be making the cut

Beers from our region can rock sometimes. I just had an Anchor Steam yesterday.
I have no doubt that NorCal is the best place on the planet for good beer, but Mendocino isn't one of them. Dude, you're in Santa Rosa. Russian ####### River, bro!!!

:lmao: I thought the same thing until a cabbie told me he'd take me to this place in Vegas that sold the coldest beer in town on my way to the hotel. I looked it up and found out it's still being brewed in the same place that brews Icehouse beer. Plank Road Brewery.

They sure as hell don't ship it west far enough to reach California. I remember when it first came out, the bottles came with some kind of collectable bottle cap thing.

Mendo deserves respect, because I remember a time when them and Anchor were pretty much the only game in town.Sadly, they haven't kept up with the youngins, but they still have a spot in my fridge, due to the nostalgia factor, and will still happily sip a Red Tail or EoTH if given the chance. Also, one of the coolest places there is to hang out on a summer afternoon.

ok, so today I'm too lazy today to drive 45 mins. to Buster's (the store that FatMax found for me :bag: ) so I check the liquor store a mile or so from my work in Memphis (has a sign out front that says they have big beer). Yeah, they have singles of Chimay and a few others in a little 3' section but that's about it.

On the way home I call the liquor store that just opened about 10 miles from home (I live in the sticks) and ask them if they carry any big beer. The owner's response - "Not yet but what do you like? I'm going to look into ordering some stuff next week." :excited: The problem is that I have no idea at this point (of the "big" beers I've only tried Celebrator, Duvel and La Fin Du Monde) so I tell him that I'm not sure.

Tonight's assignment for the beer dudes: If you liked the malty stuff (not the hoppy) what would be a few good recommendations for him?

You guys are too high class of beer drinkers for me..

If I want to compare taste of high brow alcoholic beverages I'll join a wine tasting club.

GB the stuff that gets you so tore up that you lose you underwear and wake up next to a coyote-ugly chick!

That's when you know you are drinking good beer!

Nothing wrong with a little 8-ball! I remember many a nights where we would chug down a 40 of that stuff before going out to the clubs. Made it a lot cheaper to get drunk!

Both of those are Pale Belgians (not knocking them at all .. Duvel is one of my favorite beers in the world). Have you ever had a Belgian dark (quadruppel)? St. Bernardus, Rochefort 10, Allagash four, etc?

I can't argue with that. I did the same thing. GB college.
