Over the past week:

Victory Hop Wallop (the name says it all) Imperial IPA

Mad Hatter IPA (New Holland Brewing)

The Poet Oatmeal Stout (New Holland Brewing)

Big fan of The Poet

 
Going to try and brew a Yerba Mate beer on Thursday so I am experimenting. Put some it in some Nugget Nectar and it is tasting great. Now I need to find a good Nugget Nectar clone....

New Glarus Fat Squierrel followed by a Rogue Chocolate Stout, and finishing up a Bells 9000. In my opinion the 9000 has improved iwht age, not as sweet as I remember, seems to have developed a black licorice taste.

I like Stone a lot (their RIS is awesome). Best in the country/world? I think you'll get a lot of disagreement.

Michigan, I have to support my local breweries. Founders Breakfast Stout, Kentucky Bourbon Stout (which is being released in about 3 weeks) and Bells Hopslam are all better than anything Stone makes.

I love me some Stone. Stone, Bells and Founders are my top 3.In fact only had two beers last night before switching to wine and they were Bells Java Stout and Stone Pale Ale. Both are excellent.

FBS is very good, although I don't know that I think it's better than a couple of Stone beers. Now KBS, which I had 2 bottles of three weeks ago from last year's batch, was a top 3 beer of all time for me. Haven't tried Hopslam.

Did not have the Tripel until my first trip to Belgium, it was my first beer I in Brugge and is my favorite. I make sure I have at least one of these cellared for a special time.Side question to everyone, I have a trade in the works a Dark Lord for any of my choice: Boulevard Bourbon Quad, Brooklyn Black Ops, Brooklyn Sorachi Ace, Firestone 14 - Anniversary Ale, or a Firestone Parabola. I am thinking about the Parabola.

Pass on the Black Ops and the Soraichi Ace...each are ok but not THAT great.Boulevard BBBQ has been on my list for awhile, never had it. I greatly enjoyed Firestone XII and XIII courtesy of our GB Gator, but never got my hands on the XIV or the Parabola. I say go with one of those 3....IMO.

It's not that the Black Ops and the Soraichi Ace aren't good...I think it's just an uneven trade based on availability. DL is available basically 1 day a year...I can walk into my local store tomorrow and buy both Black Ops and Soraichi Ace if I wanted to...

 
I drank a couple Bell's Oarsman ales last night. I was at a Bells beer tasting at my local liquor store in Milwaukee last week and we were happily surprised that Larry Bell himself showed up to run the event. I've been to several of these, and the out-of-state breweries typically send a rep or maybe a mid-level brewer. It was a small group so we had a great discussion, Q/A and he told some great stories. I was somewhat disappointed that the 8 beers we sampled were all normal production Bells beers - no special batches or unique beers as I have come to expect at these things. There were a couple I had not had before, and one of them was the Oarsman. Its a session beer that has a very mild sourness to it that I really like. I've been experimenting with sour beers lately and hope to be brewing one myself soon, so am trying lots of different styles of sour beer. I appreciate any recommendations in that area. I am going for more of a natural sourness like I get with the Belgian sours, something that comes more from the yeast and grain than from fruit and other adjuncts.

Its a bad week at work already, so I'm drinking a Raging B***H Belgian IPA from Flying Dog now, and will likely have another.

What are the sours you've had, and what part of the country are you in? My favorite sour is probably Temptation by Russian River. Everything they make is top notch. Also a big fan of anything from Cascade. Those are fruit sours though. Lost Abbey makes some good ones too. Those are all West Coast breweries though. I'm not as up to speed on East Coast or Mid West sours.Cantillon is regarded as the king of sours. They've gotten harder and harder to find though and $$$. I've heard home brewing sours isn't easy. There are some threads on it at homebrewtalk.com

I am a big fan of the Java Stout- easily one of my favorite Bell's beers. Last night I put back a couple Short's Good Humans, it was an interesting mix of a brown and ipa. I really liked it.
 
Pizza Port in OB (~ a mile from my crib) is tapping a keg of Pliny the Younger tomorrow at 4pm. Worth skipping out of work an hour early to get a taste?

 
Have we ever done a Best Micro Brewery discussion? Breweries shouldn't be available every where in the country, but can't be just local either.

Off the top of my head in no particular order, I'd include:

Stone

Bell's

Founders

Great Lakes

Dogfish Head

Russian River

Terrapin

What am I missing?

Half Acre Baume

Big, but not huge at 7%, this American Chocolate Rye Stout fires off a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. Balances well, but rides high on hop character at 60 IBU's while the Rye finishes it dry.

HUGE FAN

 
McSorely's is on sale cheap here right now. It's not a pure premium sort of micro, but at 5 bucks a sixer, it's a steal for St Paddy's day. Good for what ale's ya.

 
It's strange. Something that turns me off about some beers is their packaging. I don't want some crazy character on the label with "Hop to the max!!!" on it. I want a classy label (IMO) like Sierra Nevada. Guess I'm just gettin' old.
