What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (10 Viewers)

I'm drinking Oskar Blues Ten Fidy imperial stout aged in Appleton rum barrels. Oskar Blues is apparently aging Ten Fidy in rum barrels for the 2013 GABF, but released an early keg to one of the Denver brewpubs. It is pretty fantastic. It has the same dark chocolate, roasted expresso, and creamy vanilla flavors as the regular Ten Fidy, but with some delicious added Jamaican rum and oak flavors. I am finishing my second 8 oz glass and have a serious buzz going right now. It is advertised on the menu as being 10.5% ABV -- the same as regular Ten Fidy -- but I am pretty sure it picked up a couple more percent ABV during the rum barrel aging process. I think it is much better than Avery's Momi Hiwa rum barrel-aged imperial stout. Awesome stuff.

Great Lakes Erie Monster, not my favorite DIPA I have ever had.
A little too sweet for me.
Agreed, unless Great Lakes has another DIPA. I remember having a Great Lakes DIPA and wasn't that excited. In fact, I'm not sure that I'm that thrilled with man of their beers, but for some reason I keep thinking that they are a really good brewery.
Their dark beers are great, IMO, but their lighter (in terms of color) beers are hit or miss for me. I wouldn't turn down a Dortmunder Gold or Commodore Perry etc, but I won't pick them over most solid craft beer options.

Edmund Fitzgerald, however, is one of my favorite beers ever. Blackout Stout (and BA Blackout) are fantastic as well. I drink many of both of those beers all winter long.

Do beers aged in rum/bourbon/whisky barrels just taste like rum/bourbon/whisky to anyone else? Doesn't seem to be much subtlety in these type of beers, though maybe it's just the few I've tried so far that are like that.

It can impart a pretty strong flavor, but I don't think it necessarily lacks subtlety. What ones have you tried?

Living in Canada, not much that any American would know of. I've also had a couple beers from the Innis & Gunn lineup and thought the same thing though.

I think it depends on various factors like how long the beer is barrel-aged and what type of liquor barrel it is aged in. Rum barrel-aged beers generally have a stronger rum flavor than whiskey/bourbon barrel-aged beers have a whiskey/bourbon flavor because rum distilleries reuse their barrels whereas whiskey/bourbon distilleries are only permitted by law to use the barrel once. I've had some bourbon barrel-aged beers where the taste of the bourbon is very faint, but I've had others where bourbon is a very prominent flavor. Whiskey or bourbon barrel-aged stouts are one of my absolute favorite types of beer.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep that in mind the next time I decide to venture into buying a barrel aged beer.

I dont know that i would have even been able to identify the I & g that I had as beer if I didn't know beforehand.

Up in Wisc so I grabbed a few $7 sixers of Black Top and Moon Man. Usually I go all Wisconsin when I am up here but the Trigs selection didn't impress me today. Ended up also grabbing a 4 pack of Ethos IPA from Tallgrass.

Holy crap is that stuff good. Says it has 110 IBUs. Need to get more of this.

Drank it last night...not this morning. Though I am tempted....

Moon Man is legit. Love it. I never come back from Wisconsin without at least a six-pack. Got some in the fridge right now

Having one now.

Went to Three Floyds on Wednesday. Picked up:

Case of Zombie Dust

12 Alpha King

6 Gumballhead

6 Pride and Joy

2 22 oz bombers of Anicca (IPA collaboration with Half Acre, brewers of Daisy Cutter, using only mosaic hops)

Bottling my Two Hearted clone tomorrow so will dive into the above for sure.
Grew up in Munster, home of Three Floyds (and the Mustangs!), but do not get there anywhere near enough. Easter Saturday 2013 was my last visit with my brother, BIL, and cousins... My FIL has a recent interest in FFF's, so I see another trip very soon!

Got myself a sixer of Sculpin IPA. Going rate $15.99.

The cashier thought it was a price mistake. He said "for the price you don't share that beer" and "I hope it's good"

Oh it is and all six are for this guy. :)

I just picked up a 6-pack of Sculpin IPA myself while in Pennsylvania for the weekend. I'm pretty pumped to try it after all the buzz I've heard about it lately.

Where in pa?

Stone Espresso Russian Imperial Stout, without a doubt the best Stone beer I have ever had.
RuinTen is up there for me but the Espresso RIS is amazing!

Sidenote: I love Sculpin, it's fantastic. But I don't really get the focus on it over Racer 5, Alpine Beer Nelson, Pliny Elder. Just a distribution thing?

I think Sculpin is much better than Racer 5. I don't get the other 3 where I love though. I'd put Sculpin up with Hopslam, Green Flash West Coast, Dreadnaught and Ninja vs Unicorn as the top tier of IPAs I have had.

Bringing about 7 sixers back. About 5 of Black Top as well.

What would you guys think is the best 3Floyds offering?
I don't know. I like a lot of them. I go back and forth between Alpha King and Zombie Dust for their normal offerings. I would say of all of them I was a big fan of Permanent Funeral. It's actually probably easier to name the beers they make that I don't like. Lord Admiral Nelson, Calumet Queen to name a few.

Big fan of Dreadnaught, Broodoo, Apocalypse Cow, Arctic Panzer Wolf and In the Name of Suffering. The one beer I had on tap at the brewery that I haven't seen in bombers or available since was Hell's Black Intelligencer. Awesome coffee stout.

That reminds me. I need to get some Central Waters Brewhouse Coffee Stout while I am up here. Love that stuff.

It is 14.99 in most places here in the SW burbs of Chicago. Cheapest I have seen it was 13.99. I like it but there are a lot of other options available for less. That said, I do make sure to get a sixer every once in awhile.

Wegmans in Mechanicsburg, PA

I have Sculpin IPA and Racer 5 in my fridge I need to setup a blind taste test to see which I like better.

Next I will need to get some Pliny and sone Torpedo for the local flavor and settle my IPA rankings once and for all.

I had some nice selection of stuff over the weekend while visiting my in-laws in PA:

Ballast Point IPA

Troegs Java Head Stout

Founders Double Trouble IPA

Terrapin Hopsecutioner

Terrapin Pumpkinfest

Bells Two Hearted Ale

The Sculpin IPA really was fantastic. It's definitely in the elite tier of IPAs, IMO.
