Wicked weed just beat russian river and crooked stave at gbf, holy ####

Wow. Wicked Weed was one of the breweries that impressed me the most this year. I talked to one of their brewers for awhile, who seemed like a really cool guy. They unfortunately weren't pouring their gold medal award-winning sour. Fat Heads Brewing from Middleburg Heights, Ohio was another one of my favorite new brewery discoveries this year, and they just won a 2013 gold medal for their imperial IPA which has to be a bit of an upset. I tried several of their IPAs, including their gold medal-winning Hop Juju, and came away being really impressed with their vibrant super fresh hop flavors. Check out these guys' IPAs.

Decent food too. Can't remember which of their brewpubs I went to though.

A lot of the brewpubs around Denver still have some kegs of special releases that were tapped for special events during GABF week.

Yesterday, I had Avery Tweak (Meph Addict) imperial coffee stout (16% ABV) and Lagunitas High West whiskey barrel-aged Cappuccino imperial stout (13.1% ABV) on tap. I thought both were pretty fantastic. The Tweak had much more prominent roasted expresso flavors than the Cappuccino stout, but I thought the Cappucino stout highlighted a great rye whiskey flavor. Both of the beers managed to hide the high ABV exceptionally well.

I like good beer but I'm also lazy and frugal which means I'm usually drinking some that Costco sells. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale has been my go to beer for at least a year. But my store stopped stocking it but instead they now have the Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. I love it even more. Problem is after 2 cases and about 6 weeks of research I've confirmed drinking just one while relaxing in front of the tv after dinner almost guarantees dozing off for 30-60 minutes. I can drink two light beers instead without issue so it's not the 7.2% ABV. It must be all the hops. I sure hope I build up some tolerance. Anyone else experience this from just a single high hop beer?

I have not experienced this, nor have I ever heard this about hops.

Nothing wrong with Sierra Nevada beers though. As I've gotten older and more "seasoned" in the beer world, I've found myself buying far less of the hype beers and special releases, and sticking more with the sessionable high-quality beers that don't break the bank. I don't drink much of the two you've mentioned, but I'll go through plenty of Celebration in the winter.

My Costco carries Torpedo and the pale ale - both great beers imo. SNPA is the only beer my wife drinks. Torpedo is a heavy, sweet, strong beer, but I've never heard that the hops have that effect. Last time I was at our Costco I was happy to see they now carry Rogue Dead Guy - $28 for a case. That's what I'm drinking tonight.

I know it is probably sacrilege to disparage Trader Joes, but their beer selection up here is pretty weak. I bought an Octoberfest from a brewery called Joseph Brau out of San Jose and it is borderline horrible. Not sure who makes their beer purchases, but this is awful stuff and I'm pretty shocked Trader Joes would stand behind pisswater like this.

Wow, that routinely goes for $9.99 a SIX PACK and I'm not THAT far from the brewery. That's a great price for a beer that is routinely overpriced. It's a good beer, but it is not worth the price, IMO. Not when other local Oregon brewers are making better beers for a cheaper in-store price.

I was going to tell you that I didn't think the hops could be the source of your sleepiness, but I looked it up and apparently hops have been used as an herbal sleep aid.

http://www.sleeppassport.com/herbs-for-sleep.html

However, I've never heard anyone talk about this, nor have I ever experienced it myself. I'm skeptical that your sleepiness is actually caused by the hops.

My guess is that you probably get sleepy after the Torpedo Extra IPA because you catch a slight buzz off the higher ABV beer, and then you get tired when you don't continue drinking and your slight buzz starts wearing off. You will generally get more of a buzz off of one Torpedo Extra IPA than two light beers because you will typically consume the higher ABV beer in less time than it would take to consume two light beers.

Picked up the Night of the Living Dead variety case by Magic Hat from CostCo yesterday. A few meh's but overall I am enjoying it. Definately digging their HI.P.A and Number 9.

9.99 for a 6-pack and $28 for a case doesn't seem incongruous. Most 6-packs of good beer around here (Philadelphia) are like $12 and the case would be about $35.

Feeling much better after my late night Jack binge so moving onto my homemade bacon-jalapeno martinis. Not usually an olive guy (drink them with a twist - not dirty) but these sob's are delicious.

Is there a generic "what are you drinking tonight thread" I couldn't find it.

This is tasting pretty good - by the time I cook dinner it could be drunk uncle time again.

There's a drunk thread and a whisky thread and a scotch thread and a vodka thread and a rum thread, IIRC.

And a wine thread.

Maybe we need a cocktail thread.

Nope, we have one of those too.

My favorite pumkin beer is Good Gourd from Cigar City but it is hard to come by even in Tampa. They have been out of stock most of October. I picked up some bottles of PumKing and it is a pretty good substitute.

I'm drinking Victory's new DirtWolf imperial IPA. I actually like it a lot better than Victory's old Hop Wallop imperial IPA. I'd say that it is more of a West Coast-style IPA with some big tropical, pine, and grassy hops, but with a dry bready, biscuity German malt backbone. I'm a fan.
