Wow.

Avery The Beast Grand Cru 2005 (2005 14.9% vintage)Was probably about 60 degrees when I opened and poured it. Used a cognac glass for the beast.Light, delicate head barely clings to the top of the beer but keeps itself prominent at the edge of the glass. Just fine for this style. Aroma is sweet, raisiny. Suprisingly can't smell the alcohol.Taste is sweet...really sweet. Maybe the sweetest tasting beer I've ever had. And with sweet comes an overly cloying taste. Super thick mouth feel. Too much.I'm not a fan, this beer is pretty brutal. The other one I have needs another 2 years to round before I open in. Maybe then it will be drinkable.

Wow.
I bought a 12oz for $7 a few months back....It was a bit much but I wasnt ready for that kind of beer at the time. When the new release comes out Im gonna buy another and revisit it. It was WAYYYY too sweet for my taste, but its not like regular beer. The one I had was 21% if I remember correctly.

I may pick up a few bottles to send out in trades.

I felt the same way about DFH 120minuteAny beer with super high ABV is gonna be cloyingly sweet. .

Just poured another draft Bentleybrew Pale Ale, and the extra week's worth of maturing from last weekend's sample has done this thing a world of good. It's a lot hoppier now. The only problem may be the fact that I've got six liters of this stuff in the fridge now so I may be slightly...unconscious by the time the night is done.

Those two saisons make for an interesting comparison.

Dupont is a very consistent product, and consistently excellent, IMO. My target when I've tried homebrewing a saison.

Fantome makes at least 4 different saisons thru the year, and they vary wildly. (They may also vary from year to year for the same "season".) I've tried two Fantomes, both bottled; one was so "funky" as to be undrinkable, the other absolutely fantastic. I need to grab another one sometime to break the tie.

Goes to demonstrate how broad the Saison style can be.
maybe it's because finding Fantome is so rare (almost as rare as finding someone else who has sampled it!) maybe i'm biased. .. but i am willing to say that Fantome is my favorite brewery.just ridiculously good every time.

Wow.
Yup. I have a bottle of the '04 in the fridge. They also make Worldwide Stout, an imperial stout of about the same strength. Both, just freaking massive beers.'Round here, they go for $9-10 for a 12-oz bottle.

Cascade. I'd like to branch out, but I don't know enough about other what other hops taste like/do to really do it.
I've used Amarillo, Centennial, and Columbus with good success in Pale Ales. One of my favorite pale ales uses all 4 (those 3 and the Cascade).

Oh boy. I just got some awesome news today from 2 people.

First, a buddy of mine is going to Indiana in 2 weeks and hes gonna bring me back a few bombers of 3 Floyds Dreadnaught IPA and a couple other beers I ask him to pick up (havent decided on what else yet, but I cant overdo it...just a couple of bottles). So in a few weeks Ill have a couple of great beers from that region to try.

Second, and this one is pretty damn awesome. I work with a guy who's wife is Belgian and works in the travel industry, so they travel alot. They go to Belgium 1 or 2 times a year as well as many other places (Amsterdam, Germany, etc etc). I was talking to him about Trappist beers (he calls em Monk Beers), and he said theres ALWAYS someone in her family going to or coming back from Belgium. He said any Belgian beer I want he would get for me (personally or via a family member whos returning to the states). I gave him a printout of info on Westy 12 and he said hed get me a few bottles, and possibly even some Andechs Dopplebock.

:pickle: :pickle:

So even though I dont know exactly when (I know it will be within a few months), I will have a few bottles of the precious and near impossible to get Westy 12, and hopefully the legendary Andechs.

Excellent. [Note to self...get on the good side of Wingnut] :D

Bought a couple of bottles of this today and a 4 pack of celebrator. At $3.50 a 12oz bottle, I won't be buying much of the DFH but figured I might as well try it. Someone, me, is going to get very drunk during/after the big game tomorrow. Either celebrating a Steelers win or drowning in my sorrow.

Went to Fathers Office in Santa Monica for a late lunch today. Great beers on tap...

Had myself a Russian River Pliny the Elder then a Craftsman Aurora Borealis.

The wife had a Maredsous 8 then a Russian River IPA.

Nice start to the evening.

Having a new beer. Blue & Gray Classic Lager. Nothing to write home about. I did pick up some of my favorites tonight to have on hand for the game though. Titan IPA, Hercules, Racer 5 and Alpha King. Also picked up a bottle of Hop Rye and Legend Hopfest. Haven't had either before.

One of these too.
That Green Flash IPA sounds like a great beer. Let us know how it is!
Nice two finger head after an aggressive pour into a pint glass. Nice head retention and lacing on the glass. Nice hoppy beer. Pretty bitter, but mellowed as it warmed and my tastebuds adjusted. Too bad I only had one. I'd buy it again w/o hesitation. A very good APA.

Its funny...I see that beer everytime I go to the beer store but for some reason I never pick it up. Good to know.

By the way, for those of you using Firefox...you know the search tool in the top right hand corner? Both BA and Ratebeer have their engine tied into this thing. You can get them here. Search for their names and install.

Many a time someone has mentioned a beer that I have never heard of. A quick copy and paste and off you go to find out more about it.

I look for new stuff everytime. That was one of 2 when I went to one place I frequent. Can't remember the name of the other one, but my beer pimp said to give this one a try.

Charles Wells Premium Lager from the U.K. Went on an international beer buying spree for Christmas-New Years holidays and still working through it. Next up, Tiger Beer.

Middle Ages makes a draft-only pale ale using 100% Centennial. Awesome summer session brew.Try Simcoe sometime. If you want to know a hop's characteristics, check out the Hop Union data book. One great resource for beer lovers.

Tonight's brew is a one-year-old cold-aged Dominion Imperial stout - chewy chocolatey goodness. To be followed by the St. George's porter from 3C's shipment.

Im having a staredown with my bottle of Double ******* right now.

He knows Im gonna pop the top in a few minutes, but I want to psych him out a bit first....to show him Im not intimidated.

3 16oz Saranac Black Forest Drafts

2 Ithaca Apricot Wheat

2 16oz Magic Hat #9 Drafts

1 750ML Ommegang Three Philosophers

4 Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale

Good drinking night.

Just finishing up my first ever Stone Double *******.

Expertly crafted beer, and fantastic, but I think I like the Arrogant ******* better. Not because its not as strong abv-wise, but because the ABs taste is more in-your-face, raw, and untamed. The DBs taste is more refined and organized. The AB made my tongue feel like it ran a marathon, while the DB made it feel like it jogged around the block. In the ******* family, the AB, and NOT the DB, should hold the title as Most Arrogant.

That said, this beer is awesome. I just like the taste of Arrogant ******* better. Its more of a train wreck assault on the senses, while the Double ******* seems more calculated and focused.

Does that even make sense?!?!?!

And now I have fallen back to my go-to beer, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. This stuff is friggin unreal. Fantastic. Sublime.

Yeah, it make sense. I too like AB more than DB. Glad you had the chance to try both. I'm too drunk to come up with anything that resembles sentence structure right now, so I'll add more thoughts tomorrow.FatMax (passed)out

After reading a couple of the BA reviews, I think I'll let the second one age for a while. Gonna have the other one today sometime. Here's a couple of crappy pictures from my cell phone. I tried to pull the label off so I could get it all in one picture, but the label wasn't cooperating.Pic1

Cool, thanks for the scans 3C's.

Super Sunday I pretty much did a few bonghits and the only beer I drank was:

A bomber of Rogue Chocolate Stout and a Dogfish Head 60min. I ate too much munchies and left no room for beer.

Ow!! My head hurts. I figured I'd be doing a lot of drinking, so I went with cheap lagers first. 6 Mooseheads and 2 Otter Creek Lagers. Then 1 Titan IPA. Then 1 22oz Hop Rod Rye. Then 2 Celebrators to celebrate the Steelers win. I have a feeling I won't be drinking tonight.

Last week grabbed a 6-pack of Mendocino Brewing Co.'s Blue Heron Ale.

As with the White Hawk IPA, I was left a little disappointed.

Not bad (and definitely better than a lot of stuff that's out there), just not top notch.

Definitely not up to par with some of their other brews (Red Tail & Eye of the Hawk)

Yesterday grabbed a sixer of an old favorite: North Coast Brewing Co.'s Red Seal.

Oh man!

It had been awhile since I had had one of these.

I forgot just how good this brew is!

If you haven't tried it.

Do it!

You won't regret it.

:wall: My local beer store has stocked Red Seals for awhile now, but I never looked closely enough to realize that it was put out by North Coast, and thus I have never tried one. I'm an idiot. I will correct that ASAP (probably this evening).

I have also seen Blue Heron around, but never gave it a try. Other than their seasonal, I'm not a big fan of Mendocino Brewing. To me, even the Red Tail and Eye of the Hawk are just OK. Nothing spectacular.

For the Super Bowl, I drank one bomber of AB and about a sixer of Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale. Mirror Pond is another beer that I feel doesn't get enough love. It isn't a big hopped PA like Sierra Nevada PA, but it still has a very good taste and works great as a session beer.

Its been a really long time since I had the Younger, I don't remember the subtleties anymore. For some reason I can't seem to find it down here anymore.

Mendocino's 2005 Winter Ale is(was) insanely good. A great DIPA. I still have 10 bottles left from 2 cases I bought early December. Im having one right now. I havent been impressed with their regular beers, either. The IPA isnt horrible, but nowhere close to top notch.

My local store also carries Red Seal Ale. Im gonna add a couple to my next mixed 6 pack.

This is the best thread going right now.

We'll get another trade going soon FatMax. I can send you all the 90minute you want. Have you attacked Hercules yet? If so, whad'ya think?

Just finishing up the 1st Hop Ottin IPA. A pretty standard Northwest IPA. Good beer, just nothing new or exciting. Extreme hop bitterness, which I like in a beer. Really thirst quenching and easy drinking. Id like a tad more malt for more balance, but for flat out hoppiness, this beer fits the bill. Its a true Hop Bomb. Im glad I finally got my hands on some though, Ive been wanting to try ot for a while. I think Ill rev up the Racer 5 next.

:banned:
I did drink the Hercules last night. Wow. That might be the hoppiest beer I've sampled to date. If Hop Ottin is a true hop bomb, Hercules is a freakin' ICBM. The first drink made my eyes water (not joking). Very good, but for me, it's not a beer that I would want more one of at a sitting. It's almost too much. Almost. Very good, however. Not all that complex, but it is what it is. A hoppin' nuke. I followed it with a SNPA, and I couldn't even taste it.I feel the same way as you about Hop Ottin'. It's a very good beer, but it is not all that complex and could use a bit more balance (like Racer 5). That said, it is still in my top five IPAs and is a beer that hop lovers must try. I'm glad that you got the chance.

I'm saving my last DFH 90 for awhile.
Im drinking a Hercules right now - my store just got a case in today, so I now carry this beer!!! Available anytime. Im lovin that. The DFH distributor in the area is pushing for my store to carry Avery, Boulder, and DFH beers. If that happens Im gonna #### a purple twinkie.Did you taste any sweetness in the Herc I sent? The one Im drinking definately is hoppy, but has a sweetness not far off from the DFH 90 minute, IMO. Im starting to wonder if the Herc I sent didnt get cooked along the way, but seeing how the others tasted alright, thats probably not the case.. I may need to send you another though because I experienced something similar with the 2 Racer 5 bombers I had (the 1st from the brewery via mail order, the 2nd from you) - The first one I drank I didnt taste much sweetness or balance at all until near the end of the bomber....I thought it was alot like the Hop-Ottin IPA - hops, hops, more hops, and not much behind them. But when I drank the one YOU sent, right off the bat the flowery sweetness was noticeable. VERY balanced. So I think you may need to try another bomber and revisit this beer. Its right up there with 90minute, but with a *tad* less sweetness. Its definately a little more bitter/hoppy than the 90min but not by a landslide. Its got great balance.
