Yeah, the Four's a 10%. Been drinking a bit too much already to be breaking into a beer of that magnitude at this point. The DFH Fort at 2pm this afternoon may not go down in history as one of my strongest calls. That's OK. I'm still sitting on the Speedway Stout. At 12% abv, I have to make sure I don't have anything to do before cracking that badboy.
To me, Franziskaner is the best Hefe out there. Very light, very easy to drink, lots of fruit (NTTAWWT) and overall and nice beer to drink. One of my favorite beer glasses is a Franziskaner glass from Germany that a friend (RIP) got many years ago. He willed the glass to me when he passed.Tonight I'm having:

as I'm learning my way with "good " beer I've already picked up that I like the wheats. The Franziskaner is nice.To me, Franziskaner is the best Hefe out there. Ya know, I wasn't impressed with Orval either. I made 3 separate attempts at it, never did much for me.Ahh Rochefort, excellent beer. I had my first Orval tonight and wasn't impressed. The Trappist beers are normally top notch. I wasn't all that impressed with Orval.Just opened a Trappiste Rochefort 10.......Heaven.
Very cool. Last year for my birthday, my wife bought me half a dozen different kinds of beer glasses, the first in my "collection". Just a great idea on her part as I'd never thought to buy any before. To me, Franziskaner is the best Hefe out there. I had the Franszikaner Hefe tonight too.....I have had that one 2 weeks in a row. Awesome. Try the Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen if you can get it.......I love that one too.Tonight I'm having:

Not usually. They usually have banana and clove aromas. The Franziskaner has a hint of a skunky smell. Is that normal?

I bought a pack a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Florida and had one the other day. Do NOT be scared away from this beer because of the apricots. I really doubt you'll notice them that much, and this is a quality brew.Anyone try the Dogfish Head ApriHop? I am not a big Apricot fan so I haven't tried it.
I agree. I don't like apricots at all, but I liked this beer quite a bit. The second time, I had two or three and the sweetness got to me a bit, but one is just right.I bought a pack a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Florida and had one the other day. Some things never changeSierra Nevada IPA here.
Yeah, they don't have a very long shelf life. About 9 months.might have been on the shelf a little too long. Not usually. They usually have banana and clove aromas. The Franziskaner has a hint of a skunky smell. Is that normal?
You missed the I in front of the PA. Unfortunately, my wife went to the beer store with me. That curtailed the shopping spree I was intending on having a bit.I was very pleasantly surprised when we went to dinner at my wife's favorite mexican food restaurant. I asked if they had any new beer on tap, and the waitress told me that they had a new beer by Dogfish that was "a 60 on the hop scale."Some things never changeSierra Nevada IPA here.
'Hop scale' no waitress I have ever encountered knew WTF that was.You missed the I in front of the PA. Unfortunately, my wife went to the beer store with me. Wow, you are right. So what did you think? Personally I was disappointed with the I PA. From a brewco like SN I suppose I expect the world and instead I got Bolivia. I don't think I'll be buying it again. You missed the I in front of the PA. Unfortunately, my wife went to the beer store with me. It's decent enough, but I don't think I'll drink much more of it. I was disappointed from the first whiff. Especially compared to the fresh DFH 60 Minute I had last night. I didn't started drinking it for a few minutes just because it smelled so damn good.It serves its purpose tonight, though. Something to drink while playing poker while eating popcorn and malted milkballs.Wow, you are right. So what did you think? Personally I was disappointed with the I PA. Are you going to tell WYB that DFH is "60 minute" and not "60 on the IBU scale" or should I?
I know what an IBU is......I can't get the beer in the bottle and you get the friggin' beer of tap. What kind of #### is that? It's decent enough, but I don't think I'll drink much more of it. i think Dany at Fantome still uses all those ingredients in his beers.definitely dandelions in the SaisonThats good reading. I particularly liked this line
"Early brewers used herbals like balsam, hay, dandelion, mint, and wormwood seeds, horehound juice, and even crab claws & oyster shells for flavorings."
threw me off on first sip. neither beer is all too stunning.. just average.I'm not big into soccer...can I assume that the world cup is taking place in Germany? I'd be pissed if the worldcup was being held in the United States and all I could drink was Becks.Fight for your right for Coors light!!!I was reading the WSJ today and there was a big article about how pissed the Germans were that Bud was the only beer being sold at the World Cup. Interesting that the country that invented watery mass produced lagers would be upset about a watery massed produced lager.
Yes. And I completely understand that perspective. But, the tenor of the story was that Germans all drink high-quality handcrafted beer and shouldn't be forced to drink Budweiser, which is beneath them. The other part of the story is that they can't call it "Budweiser" in Germany because of their dispute with Budvar, just as Budvar has to be sold as "Czechvar" in the US.I'm not big into soccer...can I assume that the world cup is taking place in Germany? I really like dogfish IPAs. One of these days those m-fers should decide to import something to California. We need somebody in the know to give us updates when the expansion of the brewery is complete....when they will start distributing to the west coast. We're taking volunteersI can't get the beer in the bottle and you get the friggin' beer of tap. I keep looking at Orval every time I make a beer run, but never wind up getting it. They are charging $5.99 a bottle for it, while St. Bernardus 12 is $4.49 or $8.00 for the 750ml. I doubt I'll ever wind up getting it, given this review and others I've read at BA, which suggest that it is just an average Belgian.Ahh Rochefort, excellent beer. I had my first Orval tonight and wasn't impressed. The Trappist beers are normally top notch. I wasn't all that impressed with Orval.Just opened a Trappiste Rochefort 10.......Heaven.
My avatar is pleasedSt. Bernardus Abt 12. My first Belgian in sometime, and after this one, I doubt I'll wait so long for another.

We had hoped to get to GA by the end of 2006 but construction delay in
doubling our brewery means the first part of 2007, sorry. We are looking forward to coming there and being able to get enough beer for the requests we have gotten. I use to live there and am looking forward to coming back to visit.
Cheers,

here.. i'm being serious. it just doesn't seem possible that you could 1) pick up that many flavors from it, 2) make a beer that has 12 different flavors mixed in to one bottle.Glad to be back. I haven't been drinking very creatively lately, so I haven't had much to say, but I've enjoyed reading what everyone has picked up.Welcome back Bentley. You've been gone too long the beer thread.
I feel the same way fairly often. I can get categories of flavor, like if something has a floral taste, a fruity one, etc. Unless someone's a brewer and knows what flavors to look for, I find it hard to believe that they can pick individual things out to that level.can someone tell me if my tastebuds are dead?
when i drink a beer, either i like it or i don't.. the flavors that stand out to me at all are chocolate and coffee. otherwise it's either "thin", "thick", "bitter", "sweet" or, now, "piney"
why do i keep reading these insane flavor profiles over at the beeradvocate site?
i just picked up a bomber of New Holland's Dragon's Milk on a recommendation.. wanted to see what i was getting in to so i looked over the reviews
"What an unusual and unexpected flavor combination, the vanilla and almond/amaretto followed from the aroma, but its also very sour like sour milk, but not sickening, even has a slight chocolate twang"
and
"The aroma is oakey and vinous with a big chocolate and peat malt base and a touch of tart and sour dark fruits. As it warms, old cheese and strong alcohol comes out.
The flavor is sweet chocolate malts with some vinous alcohol and plums. It has a smooth woody finish."
and
"Taste some roasted flavors hints of chocolate then strong cherry flavors come on sour wine like again light vanilla and bourbon flavors with some sour vinegar notes mixed with cherry."
so all in all we've got vanilla, almond, sour milk, chocolate, cheese, plums, wine, bourbon, cherry, wood and vinegar.
am i ####### high or is that completely impossible? I realize that there are some beers with a nice complex flavor.. but let's be honest here. it can't taste like "vinegar" and "cherry" and "vanilla" and "plums". and how the hell can it range from "wood" to "vinegar"????
are people making this #### up to sound smart?

Thats good reading. The flavors are undertones. The brewer achieves an undertone without actually adding the ingredient. Take vanilla for example...you can make beers with vanilla beans and that would definately "taste" like vanilla. But if you age a dark beer in charred bourbon barrels, you will definately pick up on vanilla undertones. They didn't add vanilla, but its there.Yes.are people making this #### up to sound smart?
Its a journey. It doesn't help that its 750ml's too.Oh, and I just finished my first Alesmith Speedway Stout. HUGE beer. HUGE! I'm not kidding when I say that is the biggest beer I have ever tackled. My God.
Excellent beer though. I can see why it gets its high ratings, but there is no ####### way that it could be an everyday drinker.
