What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (19 Viewers)

can someone tell me if my tastebuds are dead?

when i drink a beer, either i like it or i don't.. the flavors that stand out to me at all are chocolate and coffee. otherwise it's either "thin", "thick", "bitter", "sweet" or, now, "piney"

why do i keep reading these insane flavor profiles over at the beeradvocate site?

i just picked up a bomber of New Holland's Dragon's Milk on a recommendation.. wanted to see what i was getting in to so i looked over the reviews

"What an unusual and unexpected flavor combination, the vanilla and almond/amaretto followed from the aroma, but its also very sour like sour milk, but not sickening, even has a slight chocolate twang"

and

"The aroma is oakey and vinous with a big chocolate and peat malt base and a touch of tart and sour dark fruits. As it warms, old cheese and strong alcohol comes out.

The flavor is sweet chocolate malts with some vinous alcohol and plums. It has a smooth woody finish."

and

"Taste some roasted flavors hints of chocolate then strong cherry flavors come on sour wine like again light vanilla and bourbon flavors with some sour vinegar notes mixed with cherry."

so all in all we've got vanilla, almond, sour milk, chocolate, cheese, plums, wine, bourbon, cherry, wood and vinegar.

am i ####### high or is that completely impossible? I realize that there are some beers with a nice complex flavor.. but let's be honest here. it can't taste like "vinegar" and "cherry" and "vanilla" and "plums". and how the hell can it range from "wood" to "vinegar"????

are people making this #### up to sound smart?

no :fishing: here.. i'm being serious. it just doesn't seem possible that you could 1) pick up that many flavors from it, 2) make a beer that has 12 different flavors mixed in to one bottle.
In addition to what the others have said in response to this post, what it comes down to is different people have different palates. One guy might taste plums, and another might not get plums but instead taste vanilla, while yet another gets something else. What I like to do when I get a new beer is read a few reviews over at BA and see what others are tasting in it, then when I drink it, I try to nail down a few of those flavors, as well as others I may notice myself...

Of course, being a big time Hop Head, my taste buds probably cant pick out as many sublte nuances as someone who has a more refined palate. My taste buds have taken a beating over the last year with all the hops I throw at em almost daily.

And to stay on topic, I just cracked my lone Troegs Nuggest Nectar.

Oh, and if you want to know the vanilla taste in beer, drink anything that has been Oak-aged.
the Tyranena Rocky's Revenge is aged in bourbon barrels.. the flavor definitely comes through in that one.

the way i drink a beer definitely lends itself to being able to spot the flavors should they be there... but it's just not happening. unless it's overwhelming, i don't get 14 flavors in a beer.

and i'm an eater. i love food.. love flavor.. though i have to confess that i tend to call things out differently than my friends (for instance, wine tastes like bread and butter to me). still.. i think 75% of it is BS and 25% is truth.

if i were to review the Rocky's i'd call out the bourbon taste.. the Falls Nut Brown Ale.. well, tastes like mixed nuts and chocolate.

but all this nonsense about "vinegar" and "wood".. come on now.

I haven't had the beer that you were tasting earlier in the thread so I can't comment. Vinegar isn't a common flavor in beer unless something has gone wrong.

You mean you can't tell the difference between birch and oak? Jeebus, man, go back to Budweiser!!! ;) I like to finish half the brew, see what flavors I can pick out, then look at some BA reviews if I can't place a flavor. It's a fun way to educate the palate and the buzz is just a bonus. I can nail a number of flavors and a lot of hops, but by no means have a palate like Venom (one seriously great guy, btw - he's into beer like Otis is into women) or some of the other long term BAs. I've been in a long non-reviewing mode - probably should start that up again.

Right now I'm drinking a Dominion Oak Aged Millenium - aroma of toast, tobacco, vanilla, bourbon-like alcohol fumes, toffee, and a earthiness that indicates East Kent Goldings hops. Flavor starts with vanilla and toffee-apple malt, with tea-like flavors that I attribute to Liberty hops (had an astounding all-Liberty cask ale at Cambridge Brewing Co once that had me wanting to abscond with the cask - talked with Will Meyer, the brewer, who explained what flavor notes were due to what components and have never forgotten that flavor) then gets a peppery alcohol flavor going mid-sip, followed by a slightly tongue-numbing sensation (alcohol? phenols?) with bourbon flavor notes and a non-aggresive bitterness (Perle hops), with a long vanilla and apples/apricots finish with slight hints of licorice.

No BS, just the flavors I'm tasting. You may try it and find different flavors. The wonders of beer. :banned:

My wife and I were taking a walk through the neighborhood earlier and my neighbor came out and "forced" a couple bottles of a Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout clone that he'd brewed. It was pretty good.

Page freaking 6?!?!?!?

Slackin #####es....

Im looking at Heckman's APril BOTM stout....waiting for it to give me a sign that it was shaken off the cold and reached proper drinking temp.....

:coffee:

Speakeasy IPA. Decent, but I've had better.

Still trying to find the Stone RIS. :kicksrock:
Where are you located?I was going to crack it tonight but at 10.8% alcohol I sort of chickened out for a Monday night :bag:

SE Va. Called my beer guy and he said he normally doesn't get it until July. I was like  There are people in Ohio and Mass claiming to have it in stores. He's going to check with the distributor and call me back. :fingerscrossed:

:goodposting: Bad enough that I won't be enjoying any of those on draft day, but I'm on call so I won't be enjoying any beer.

Drinking a Homebrewed Oatmeal Stout I got from a buddy in the mail....

I gotta say, once the rediculously aggressive head setteled down (after rising over the edge of the glass) and I could actually drink it, this stuff is pretty good.

Nice biscuity flavor, with juuust enough bitterness. Very smooth beer. Im not sure, but there may be a slight hoppiness in the finish. I could drink a few of these easily. I wish I knew the gravity, but it feels around the 5-6 ABV range. Damn I like me a good oatmeal stout, and this is good. I wish I had more, but Ill enjoy this one to the last drop!

GB homebrewers

Wide variety of beers tonight while hosting my monday night poker game. New Glarus Hop Hearty, New Glarus Belgian Red, Three Floyd's Dreadnaught, DFH 90 Minute, Bell's Third Coast Ale.

Belgian Red is the SHIZNIT. I freakin love that stuff. Furley sent me a bottle last month. Freakin dessert in a bottle.

Guess Im lone sharkin it tonight...

After the Mad Anthony Stout, a Homebrewed Oatmeal Stout, and a North Coast Rasputin stout, Im gonna move on to a Boulder Hazed & Infused, one of my favorite quenchers.

Looks like most of the beer guys have turned in for the night expect for the west coaster, Skylord, who is still lingering...

BTW, Skylord, I havent had the Hopsickle yet...I just put it in the fridge for tomorrow night. I was gonna take it to the beach with me but decided Id be better off drinking something Ive had beforem like Hazed & Infuzed, Mojo IPA and Aprihop. That way I wouldnt have to take notes for a BA review, cause I really want to review that one.

 the whole concept of a cherry or raspberry flavored beer seems strange to me.. but it's been a hot request. sent one to Winston Smith as well.

call me stupid, but, do Oatmeal Stout's taste at all like oatmeal?

Stupid. :P :D Nah. The oats add a little bit of sweetness. I don't think they taste like oatmeal though. Of course, maybe my tastebuds aren't as defined/refined as they could be. Oatmeal Stouts tend to be a little sweeter than other stouts. A good one, like Sammy Smith, is nice and smooth.

When I think of oatmeal stouts, it is not so much the taste of the oatmeal as it is the change in the mouthfeel of the beer. A good oatmeal stout should be more creamy, almost silky in taste as compared to a regular stout.

well, this is pretty much exactly what i'm looking for from a stout.. but i've always been afraid because i thought it'd taste like oatmeal :X

so, for example, the Kentucky Breakfast Stout would be a creamy stout?

Good call. Oatmeal stouts are generally sweeter, but that's not really from the oatmeal. They're generally brewed more like a sweet stout (e.g., Mackeson's) than a dry stout (e.g., Guinness or Murphy's).The oil content of the oats does affect the mouthfeel and texture of the beer. I think that matches up better with the sweet style than the dry, and that's why you'll usually see oatmeal stouts on the sweeter side.

Yes. A creamy stout with coffee and bourbon. Lots going on in that beer!

Have you had that? I had a sample of it at a BA Fest, and man was it outstanding! Try it if you haven't already.

First of all, run out and buy that beer. I have heard great things.Secondly, a lot of stouts are creamy, even if they aren't Oatmeal stouts. My love is big stouts, and they don't necessarily have to be creamy to be good. If you get a chance, try a milk stout for another interesting take on the style. And yes, the lactose will make the beer sweet in a 'milky' sort of way. These are usually smooth and very sweet beers with less emphasis on hops.

i've got a few milk stouts on my "wants" list over at the BA.

and i know of at least one locally brewed Milk Stout (Slab City Milkhouse Stout). but the KY Breakfast and the Slab City are at two different stores on opposite ends of the city about 25 minutes apart.

guh

well... i know what i have to do.

When you get the Kentucky Breakfast, see if they also have Devil Dancer (same brewery - Founders). The DD is a "triple" IPA - 13% abv, and ~200 IBU. Believe it or not, this is a balanced, drinkable (well, sippable) beer.

I'm taking notes. Is the DD a seasonal? I'm going to be in Founder's distribution area in a couple months. I'm looking to pick up the stout, and now I have added the Devil Dancer to the list. Also going to get some Bell's Two-Hearted, and hopefully Dreadnaught if I can find it.

I'm getting that feeling.  You know that feeling.  It's that feeling when your girlfriend/wife is working late, there ain't #### on TV, and you just cracked a beer and it's tasting very good.  God, I hope I'm not alone this evening.

Okocim Porter right now.  Very good stuff.

Kilgore, have you ever had one of these?
Bump for Trout, if he is still around.

You need to hook up with Skylord for some Speedway then. That beer makes Old Rasputin look like a little biotch.

Sorry I missed this. No, I haven't tried it, nor have I seen it in these parts (but maybe I wasn't looking very hard). I've actually never had a Baltic Porter of any type. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it.And as far as the Speedway Stout is concerned, it is high on my list of beers I want to try. I think I even asked if you could get it the last time we traded. I wonder if their beer makes it up to Portland, since I will be there in July.

That Okocim was very good. It started like a Belgian and finished malty. In the most non-homosexual way possible, I thought about you when I was drinking it. It just seemed like a beer that you would really dig.I don't think Alesmith makes it too far out of Southern California, unfortunately.

Not sure. A friend of mine snagged a 4-pack for me a month or so ago.Previously, I've only had it on draft at the Great Taste of the Midwest festival in Madison.

When you start thinking about me in the shower, then we can worry.I'll definitely keep my eye out for it. I know one beer store that specializes in imports, so I will have to check them out.
