What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Starting off on a strange note: Heavyweight Two Druids Gruit. No or limited hops, but instead it has yarrow, sweet gale, and rosemary.

Most bizarre smelling brew I've ever whiffed. There are no words to describe this aroma. And it changes over distance: from a foot away, it's almost like soured Old Spice cologne, but in a good way. In the snifter, it's tart, spicy, aromatic as hell, definitely can smell the rosemary but a bunch of completely strange aromas as well.

Wow. Like an herbal geueze. Freaking A wild stuff.

DAMMIT, TOM, DON'T CLOSE THAT BREWERY!!!!

Question I had while buying beer tonight. Is $13 too much to pay for a 6 pack? How about $16?
Depends on the beer. Is $28 too much for a growler fill, not including the growler? Before you answer, that's what the local beer store was getting for growler fills of DFH Worldwide Stout two summers ago.

I'm trying to picture a rosemary smell in a beer and I can't do it. Either way, sounds like something worth trying.

BTW, I agree with Skylords review of Big Bear..."Not a bad beer but I wouldn't search it out." Thin. Not much going on. A bit of a letdown considering the rating on BA. I get the feeling people are afraid to give a beer from a respected brewery like Bear Republic bad ratings.

I'm heading back to the beer store tomorrow and buying up whatever he has left, if any, 'cause once it's gone there ain't no more. :( Hopefully I'll have a few for trades.

Having a Marin White Knuckle DIPA.

Very good citrusy hoppy beer. When are some of these West Coast guys going to start distributing here?

Thanks again Fro.

Here's why I ask. I picked up a 6 pack of Oskar Blues Gordon months ago. It was about $13. Really good, but I thought $13 was a bit much for a 6 pack. $8 or $9 for a 6 pack is "ok" but still on the higher end. Meaning it's good beer. Maybe not great. A 6 pack of 60 minute is about $8. A 4 pack of 90 minute is about $8 or $9 (I think). So, on the way home tonight I got a bomber of Legend Golden Ale for $3.69 and a bomber of Arrogant ******* for $3.99. The Legend wasn't very good. The bomber price equated to about $12 for a 6 pack. I wouldn't pay $5. Then I was thinking how good a deal AB was compared to the Legend. But still, that comes to $13 for a 6 pack. It might be worth it, but I'm not sure others are. Then there are bombers that sell for quite a bit more. A $7 bomber is a $23 6 pack.

And I used to think a $5 6 pack of Michelob was a lot to pay.

Hard fact = good beer costs money. It sucks, but I always break down and pay it. I have a TON on hand right now, so it's time to sit and drink down the supply... :banned:

No doubt. I also brought it up because when I was "shopping for beer" (actually just wanted one for the drive home  ) I started to buy a 6 pack of Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout. It was $7 for a 6 pack. But I didn't. I knew I had this cold bomber of Big Bear on hand. It was $5, I think. That's about $16 on a 6 pack scale. I'd rather have the OD.

Edit: Actually thinking back, the Oskar Blues was $13 for a 4 pack.

I've never had a problem paying for beer. I'm fairly frugal in most other departments, but I'll drop $17 for a 750ml of a beer I've never had any day.

Yeah, for a beer you've never had. And hopefully an outstanding beer. What about an everyday sort of beer? Bombers are kind of everyday sort of beer for us beer snobs. ;)

I really liked it. The 'thinness' really added to its drinkability. It could almost be an Imperial Porter. My thoughts on this beer from when FatMax traded with me many moons ago:
One of the more balanced imperial stouts I have tasted. Hints of chocolate and coffee are present, and the hops are there but do not overwhelm. Really smooth finish, and the alcohol is pretty well hidden, with only a hint of burn on the finish. Not as sweet as some Stouts I have had, but that isn't a bad thing. One of the easier drinking big stouts.

I was giving Gator a hard time. You had an alias? I can never figure that stuff out. I had to look up how to spell aliai. ;)

I have no idea what my number was on old yeller. I was around way back when, but was scared to join these weirdo message boards. So I lurked for a long time.

You must have missed the day I came out. I created mr furley (no .) and had a great time with the alias before everyone and his brother ended up with a version of furley or some other BIFer. I guess I am to blame for the craziness with had for a couple days there...

Guess you made sure to make up for it by getting in right away when the new board came up. I was stuck at work with no internet. Got in the first day, but not early at all.

Thanks, I enjoyed it and sort of started the :loco: at the same time.

Starting big tonight - Allagash Tripel Reserve. I hadn't sampled it before, and now after drinking a bit of it, I wish I would have made it a regular. Very good beer.
I definitely preferred this one to Dubbel Reserve and FOUR when I hit the brewery the other day. I think Allagash White was my favorite of the four though.

How much do you think I'll be able to sell a bomber of 02.02.02 - 12.12.12?
http://beeradvocate.com/forum/read/746284Escondido, San Diego County, CA --- On a day that is never the same, but always consistent, Stone Brewing Co. releases a beer that is never the same, but always consistent. Fans of the innovative brewery know that when the day, month, and year are all the same on the calendar something special is about to happen. This year Stone will release the fifth in a series of eleven different beers on June 6th: the Stone 06.06.06 Vertical Epic Ale.

Stone Brewing first released the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series on February 2nd, 2002 and has done so consecutively, for five years now, one year, one month, and one day after the last edition. This year's version happens to come out on June 6th, 2006, next year's edition will be released July 7th, 2007, followed by August 8th, 2008, all the way to December 12th, 2012.

Stone’s “Epic” saga isn’t even half way over, but is already taking the beer community by storm. A beer that started as an original, quirky concept has morphed into an enigmatic quest for beer enthusiasts everywhere. The early years of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale are actually so revered by beer geeks worldwide that single bottles are commanding prices of $400 or more per bottle, and according to the Wall Street Journal, the Stone 02.02.02 Vertical Epic Ale is one of the rarest craft beers in America.

The grand premise of the series is that each edition is to be brewed in a different style from the previous year, and since the beers are bottle conditioned (naturally carbonated in the bottle) they will mature when cellared, providing the beer enthusiast with a Stone Vertical Epic Ale tasting to look forward to sometime after 12.12.12 when the last edition is released. To aid these beer enthusiasts, Stone Brewing lists the areas of the country that are slated to get an allocation of the Stone 06.06.06 Vertical Epic Ale. For some of the 19 states, that are getting it, the company's website goes even further to provide a list of retailers.

As with previous editions of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series, Stone is again posting a detailed homebrewing recipe complete with hints, anecdotes and words of wisdom courtesy of Head Brewer, Mitch Steele and Lead Brewer, John Egan. Additionally, Stone is challenging homebrewers to brew their favorite Stone Vertical Epic Ale and submit it to the brewery for a competitive judging. The recipes and competition guidelines can be found here.

Stone Brewing Co. is located in Escondido, CA and is one of the fastest growing breweries in the country. Additionally, Stone Brewing is one of the highest rated breweries in the world according to both RateBeer.com and BeerAdvocate.com. Stone Brewing is open for tours and tastings Monday-Friday from Noon-6pm and on Saturdays from11am-5pm. For more info go to http://www.stonebrew.com or call the brewery at 760.471.4999, x1500
F*** the stock market. Wait, how much does a case cost again? They have distribution in Boston and Cambridge, MA but I won't be living there for another 3 weeks. I'm guessing this is the type of stuff that sells out within a few days?

Besides chatting with friends, the only thing that got me through the Sox douching tonight: Cadillac Mountain Stout. It was pretty tasty but a disappointment after reading that it was the top competitor to the Allagash brews here in Maine.

I sampled some Allagash last week and tried this tonight. All these beers taste very rich, but almost too rich. I'm just wondering if I should be starting lower on the food chain so to speak. I'm only 21 so if I come off as not appreciating these complex beers, that's why. I guess drinking real beer has come as sort of a shock after drinking watery domestics for so long.

I'm hoping to hit up the D.L. Geary's and Casco Bay breweries this week.
Four words:CASCO BAY RIPTIDE RED.

You'll thank me later. :banned:
I've read good things about the ole Riptide Red.Not sure I will be able to make it to the breweries for sampling tomorrow as I haven't called in advance to book it. Hopefully they'll be cool with it. Even if I can't, I found the local beer goldmine last night and can pick up a bomber there within the next couple days.

So, last beer of the night is a St. George American Brown Ale. Not bad. Not great.
That is pretty much my opinion of most Brown Ales. I do like Fat Squirrel from New Glarus better than most though.
