What kind of WINE did you drink last night? (1 Viewer)

From Trader's Joes, 2005 Gamay Beaujolais for $2. This is a great wine if are looking for a simple, drinkable wine. I can drink it with any meal since it isn't acidic or have a lot of tannins. My favorite table wine.Info about this type of wine:

Gamay BeaujolaisFood to Eat with a Gamay (Beaujolais)The Gamay grape is the basis for Beaujolais. While nobody puts Gamay in the same category as classified Bordeaux or Grand Cru red Burgundy, it's nonetheless a fun, enjoyable grape that goes very well with food. Soft and easy tannins, bright zingy acidity and forward, easy fruit make it a winner at the table. Many everyday foods like beef, steak, lamb, veal, chicken, venison or elk hamburgers and even wild turkey are prime candidates for Gamay. You can even drink it with flavorful fish like Tuna.Gamay is inexpensive and tasty and extrordinarily drinkable. More "serious" French examples (Brouilly and Fleurie, St Amour, Morgan, and Chirobles for example) can be rich, succulent and even capable of aging ten years or more. These stand up to stronger-flavored savory recipes, including venison and elk stews and steaks.History and CharacteristicsThe full name of this Beaujolais grape is Gamay Noir a'Jus Blanc. Gamay grapes are 98 percent of all vines planted in the Beaujolais region. It is immediately drinkable, light- to medium-weight wines with high acidity and low tannins. Gamay is grown in other parts of Burgundy, such as the côte chalonnaise, where a blend of pinot noir and not more than two-thirds Gamay is known as bourgogne passe-tout-grain.In the Loire Anjou produces Anjou Gamay and from Touraine comes Gamay de Touraine. There is very little true Gamay cultivated in California. For years California vintners grew what they thought was true Gamay Noir a'Jus Blanc, calling the resulting wines gamay Beaujolais. However, DNA testing identified it as a clone of Pinot Noir. California's Napa Gamay is Valdiguie, a varietal from Southern France's Languedoc-Roussillon region. It is a light- to medium-bodied wine in a style similar to true Gamay from Beajolais.Because of historic practice, both California wines are sometimes still called Gamay Beaujolais. Blaufränkisch, a variety grown in Austria is also sometimes mistakenly called Gamay. Other names for Gamay include Bourguignon Noir and Petit Gamai. All in all, when the soil is right, it is a deliciously juicy, easy drinking, gulpable wines.

Finally, a post for the civilized fantasy football meathead. Thank goodness.

For the record, I had a $2 bottle of wine last night that my fiance picked up from Trader Joe's. It tasted like it was aged in someone's crack.

Just got my cakebread wine of the month club bottles yesterday.

2002 benchland Cabernet -
Haven't had the pleasure of trying anything from Cakebread, but I hear very good things. Their wines are a bit more pricey, but I hear worth every penny. Let us know how the Cab rates when you pull the cork.
I have a case of their '97 Cabernet and '01 Merlot

Here are some of my faves...

Qupe Syrah ($15)

Ben Marco Malbec ($20)

BR Cohn Silver Label Cabernet ($25)
If you want a great value in Syrah I have one that I loveLos Planos Syrah

From the largest winery of Aragón.

They make about 6,000 cases a year and I have plenty of this in my collection. About 10 bucks a bottle. In it you will find blackberry, smoke, and white chocolate and a real forward, fruity, medium-body. Find this one and ENJOY!

Cabernet?

I will always be a fan of Staglin but my all time favorite Cab is from Washington. Quilceda Creek Cab is the best one, to me, that this country produces. The '02 cab I have is my ultimate baby. I also have one case left of the '97 Cab that I have cracked a few bottles but I am holding out a few more years. GOD I love this wine.

If you want some great value wines check out Sutton Table Wine. No more then 10-12 per bottle and he made Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Sadly, with the high increase of Pinot Grapes he is not making the Pinot anymore since he can't keep the cost down. This was a great tasting AND inexpensive Pinot. Sure I have my '98 Grace Vineyard Pinot Noir from Domaine Serene that is my baby but I drank the Sutton quite often and had no problem drinking with the guy down the street who owns the liquor store that I think is one of the best in the upper midwest for wine. In fact he showed it to me about a year ago.

The Sutton Table Merlot is a blend of Merlot and Cab Franc which gives it a nice note of spiciness with chocolate and berries.

Try the Chardonnay because it's blended with a little Viognier.

Also wanted to add that I just got back from Italy where I drank some great Amarone, Valpocella, Chianti, and some very old and very good Brunellos.

Ate some great food also.

I now have to give my liver a two week break and get back into working out to lose some of this poundage I put on.

I've tasted 12 pinot noirs this week, 8 cabs, 6 merlots, 8 zins, and a slew of chardonnays (by slew I mean at least 10) this week.

Saintsbury Brown Ranch Pinot Noir. About $42 wholesale or $55 retail.

It is the single best Pinot I have tried all year.

BTW...don't expect much from the 2005 Napas...their rain this past fall could not have come at a worse time. (I've heard this from 3 different winemakers in the last month).

Drunk & going to bed. :bye:

Just had a couple glasses of Loloinis 2002 merlot (Redwood Valley). Decent merlot, a little more acidic than I like but overall a good glass.

Tonight, going to open a 2002 Rioja. Called Marques de Caceres.
Top 10 affordable wines of all time.
Tipsy,I really would like to send you some information from a company I know that purchases small production wines. Good friends of mine. I will have to check out if they are licensed in LA or not.

I just had one of their Malat Das Beste Vom Riesling 2002 from Austria. It was from Malat. Anyone know who he was?

i had the serious pleasure of having lunch with bob bertheau, the head wine maker from chateau st michelle in WA, & ernst loosen, one of the highest regarded wine makers in the world last week. i was at a tasting sponsered by CSM & tasted 18 different reislings from all over the world, including austrian, german, australian, & of course a 5 year vertical of the 'eroica'(the wine co-produced by CSM & loosen). we also were able to try the $$$ late harvest wines by CSM.

when we broke for lunch bob & ernst chose to sit at our table! very cool down to earth dudes who love to make wine & drink their asses off! had a blast & got mildy tanked, damn work!

We went with:

La Motte Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (South African)

Then Cousino Maçul - Antiguas Reserva 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon(Chilean)

Then for the ladies a Valpollicella, Bertani 1997 (Italian)

And for the men a 2002 Salentein Roble Merlot (Argentinian)

Boones Farm - Strawberry Hill. Nice bouquet. Beatiful pink appearence. Overtly cloying taste that lingers on the pallete. Two thumbs up.

2004 Blue Nun - Qualitatswein ....

It's cheap but I like it. Out of my 10 bottles on my wine rack, 4 are the Blue Nun.

Next Friday I am hosting a Bavarian Wine Dinner where we are serving some small case production German and Austrian wines.

I will be meeting with this company and will give them your address where they can send a wine list and ask you what kind of wine you are looking for.

I really like this company for what they can offer.

FWIW, I could probably name 10 wineries within 10 miles of CSM that I personally prefer, and some by a good bit. CSM isn't bad, but it certainly isn't top tier around here - it does have the name though.
good for you. you'll notice i didn't pimp their wine just the fact that i had lunch with 2 pretty cool winemakers. especially ernst loosenhad a 91 caymus ss

95 opus sadly it had flattened out :(

also tasted a a horizontal of sebastiani's 03 vintage. chard, merlot, cab & barbera  i liked the chard, not too much ML & the merlot was surprisingly good.

jules, i'd like that name also. thanks

Chef & I continue our week long wine binge tonight:

1989 Monticello Cellars "Corley Reserve" Cabernet Sauvignon.

I had real good potential, but it wasn't stored right & lost all its structure about 10 minutes after we opened it. Still drinkable, but just lost its spine. The tannins I first detected led me to believe this one had held up very well. I let it sit 5 minutes & could tell it was already losing it. Glad it was free!!!

Got to talk about the bad ones too. :(

Alright, I guarantee this thread breaks out into fights over Bush and/or religion by the fourth page.

it was at the balboa bay club.

Catena Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (Argentina) - the Malbec is better but stilla good wine
Argentina (Malbec) is the next Australia (Shiraz). Book it. BTW, I had a little glass of a Michael Torino Malbec last night at a little Italian place. Very nice. Didn't catch the vintage but it was probably in the last couple of years. Fruity burst but soft on the palette. Nicely balanced I thought.

Fonseca Porto Bin #27

Not the finest port I've ever had, but for $20, definitely the best value in port that I've ever drank.

Goes darn good with the chocolate out of my kid's Easter baskets, too!

Last nite was a good one.Good friend brought a '90 Lafite and a '77 Dows Port.

A nice Boodles Martini before dinner

14 oz Bone-In Tenderloins with Bakers and Asparagus with the Lafite

2 nice glasses of Dows after dinner. Too bad he doesn't smoke cigars :(

A 1995 Pomerol, Ch Ferrand...

Not bad, but past its best. A little thin, with a slightly dusty finish.

Tonight, a bottle of Prince Pirate Semillon/Sauvignon Blance. Wheat straw color and the taste of green apples. A nice sipping wine before dinner.

With dinner, a bottle of 2004 Wyndham Estate Bin 333 Pinot Noir. A bit thin on the flavour and the colour. Probably wouldn't buy it again.

Had some steaks and a bottle of Clos La Chance 2002 Zinfandel.

I like this wine for the price ($16). Has that nice strawberry thing going on....but not too fruity (which usually makes a wine taste cheap).

Let's see....

Friday my gf and I had a bottle of Eroica riesling with dinner. Actually, she pretty much drank half the bottle in a half hour and I had a couple sips. I ended up drinking Amstel the rest of the night (from my brother's kegerator, my wedding present to him - I digress). She ended up finishing the bottle.

I had 2 bottles of Coppola 2004 Rosso. It was $7 and for that price it was a great wine. Been drinking a lot of Zin's lately and that one is mixed 47% zin, 32% cab sav and 21% syrah. Good stuff.

Also bought a bottle of 98 Frogs Leap cabernet. Very good.

Today I drank a bottle of 2000 Santa Cristina from Antinori. Past it's prime, IMO. I think the Santa Cristina's are a good value but better to drink the most recent vintages, ie 2004 now.

My gf got me a membership to CSM's wine club. We get a white and a red every 3 months. The UNO chardonnay was great as was their Ophelin Rhone-style blend. I have a 2003 Cold Creek Cabernet waiting to be opened. Wasn't all that impressed with their 2002 Cold Creek so we will see..

Had a bottle of Monkey Bay Chard. Tastes more like a Sav Blanc than a Chard. A little too sweet for me. It was cheap tho at about $10 at the GC. And being sweet the non wine drinkers really liked it....

2002 Summers Charbono. Outstanding stuff. I love all their wines, but this one is probably my favorite. I got drunk Easter night, and I gotta say this morning I may have an idea what the resurrection felt like.

Amen!

I have not seen Chianti mentioned. My favorite :banned: Ruffino is solid
