I love parts of Detroit. No votes for Detroit yet? This board is slipping.
I've never been but from everything I've read....

You obviously have never been to Tennessee.I'd probably vote for Tenn, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma.
I was in Midland a year and a half ago. The parts I was in were extremely wealthy. Odessa was a dump, but if you haven't been to Midland in awhile, it's a pretty rich area and could in no way be considered a dump.Odessa-Midland is the same place, awful in every way. Texas in general is a terrible state. Hot, no trees and no water except some man-made cess pools they call "lakes." Low taxes, cheap living and nice folk makes Texas. Same with Oklahoma. Those are just sleepy towns on the south plains. Boring but not awful.El Paso is great. Aren't you from California? Inland Empire and Stockton-Modesto along with Fresno are way worse.cstu said:I have not been to Detroit, but of the places I've seen it's El Paso.
San Angelo, Lubbock and Midland worse than El Paso.
Odessa on the other hand...

Seriously. Just look at google images of that place.I have to assume that everyone who put Newark has never been to Camden. Newark is your run-of-the-mill bad inner-city environment. Camden looks like Mogadishu, circa 1993.

This is what upsets me about politics. You can send millions over seas, how about taking care of Camden?Another vote for Camden. Trenton is bad but is not that big of a town. Newark is bad but actually has a nice look at the city and some pretty cool buildings. Having said said that, NJ has some very good looking towns. I think most of Florida is a dump.
That's actually what I was thinking of instead of Bakersfield. Regarding that, leave downtown St. Louis and take the 15-minute drive on I-70 West towards the airport and look at most of the housing along the way...that is what I thought of when I read that. Just an awful-looking area. I used to have relatives that lived in Ferguson and Jennings when I was a kid, and those were good areas at the time, but now they are some of the worst in the entire St. Louis area.Having lived in Denver all my life I am shocked when I travel to Midwest cities and the East Coast. There are parts of St. Louis that look like what I imagine war zones look like. There is no where in Denver that can touch East St. Louis for dump status. Move West people.
I live in the Inland Empire, but in a good part of it. Riverside, San Berdu, Colton, Moreno Valley all suck.El Paso is great. Aren't you from California? Inland Empire and Stockton-Modesto along with Fresno are way worse.cstu said:I have not been to Detroit, but of the places I've seen it's El Paso.

Sacramento is not one of the country's finest destinations by any stretch butyeah, I was kind of surprised when I was there. Downtown Sacramento is not a place you want to be late at nightSacramento
at it appearing on this list.Florida.
I can tell you that Akron>Toledo>Detroit.i can't think of one redeeming quality about any of Toledo, Akron, Dayton, and Youngstown.I live between Cleveland, Akron, and Toledo. Those cities are vacation destinations for people living in Detroit.Only two of the four #### holes in Ohio so far? I'll take care of the others. Toledo and Akron.
i am going to nitpick because it doesn't fit my narrative. That airport is in canton. And you're totally right. Rarely fly out of Cleveland, try to only fly out of there. The Akron airport is awesome because you can park 17 inches from the front door. It felt like a lego village.
So Detroit's a great place to live, just as long as you don't actually live there.Yeah but people are listing Detroit when Livonia a Detroit suburb of 97k, is one of the ten safest places to live in the U.S. Same with Canton, Novi and most of the Northern suburbs.
Detroit drags the entire state down.Nope, they are the same city in every way. Flint only worse because they don't have sports teams.A lot of votes for Detroit, but I think Flint is worse.
Detroit metro is great btw.
WTF are you talking about? Detroit metro has four million people and is the 11th largest metro area in America. Even in a decline it'll still be a top 20 metro area in your lifetime.I grew up and lived in a suburb on the outskirts of Detroit most of my life. I worked in the hood of Detroit in my 20's & 30's (80's & 90's) and enjoyed hanging out with my co-workers from Detroit and also enjoyed going to the entertainment districts at night but that ship has sailed years ago.
Once my kids graduated high school I pounced on the opportunity to remove ourselves from Detroit (Wayne County suburbs) as the area is going downhill fast.
There is still a group of supporters trying to stage a resurgence and I truly admire that but I just don't see things turning around. Unfortunately the Coleman Young and Kwame Kilpatrick regime were able to play the race card and convince the city of Detroit to believe in them while they stole the entire city and their people blind.
With that said most of the areas outside of Detroit do offer the opportunity for quality living but can the area survive without a thriving major city?
Michigan is one of the best states in the union, people forget Detroit is in Michigan. Longest fresh water coastline in the world, trees, lakes, everything. Where did you "remove yourself" to? DO NOT SAY FLORIDA.

It's amazing to me to go to the waterfront in Camden, and then see the rest of it. The aquarium is nice, it feels safe, and there's a great concert venue...then you go back 3-4 blocks and it's like an urban war zone. That is the area I had in mind when I wrote that. And the thing is it just goes on and on.Regarding that, leave downtown St. Louis and take the 15-minute drive on I-70 West towards the airport and look at most of the housing along the way...that is what I thought of when I read that. A friend lived in Ferguson until about a year ago. She is, by her own admission, pretty ghetto, but even she got out of there because she was scared ####less of how dangerous the area had became. Granted, she didn't use those exact words, but she all but said it. She has two young daughters, and hearing gunfire on a regular basis when driving around her neighborhood was her last straw. That is the area I had in mind when I wrote that. And the thing is it just goes on and on.Regarding that, leave downtown St. Louis and take the 15-minute drive on I-70 West towards the airport and look at most of the housing along the way...that is what I thought of when I read that. Could not agree more. DO NOT COME HERE. Especially Palm Beach County.Florida.![]()
The place is a pit. Inane humidity. Lousy storms. And the people. My God, the people. Meth-addled toothless inbred hicks. And those are the good ones. Seriously. Whenever you hear about some brain-damaged moron doing something stupid on the news, up to and including some guy hopped up on bath salts going full-on zombie cannibal and trying to eat another dude's face while he's still wearing it, it always happens in Florida. Never fails.
Mosquitos the size of sparrows. Jeebus Florida sucks. "Oh, the weather's nice," they'll say. They are idiots. Los Angeles has nice weather. In Los Angeles you can eat outdoors at a restaurant every day of the year and never shoo a bug away from your food. In Florida you'll be eaten by mosquitos before the entrees arrive. In Florida a gator will crawl out of the freaking swamp and gnaw on your leg while you're waiting for dessert. You never hear of plywood shortages in Los Angeles when a storm is coming, because "storm" in Los Angeles means it might rain for a second day this year. In Florida you got freaking hurricanes and flooding and, oh yeah, the place is still a swamp. Full of the worst white trash in the country. Screw Florida. America's wang.
Yeah, that's how I feel in Morris County. Every town is really nice. Nice parks. Nice people.I'm a VA transplant living in NJ now. I won't argue with the specific NJ cities mentioned here, but let's not lump in the entire state. I live out in Hunterdon County NJ (#4 in 2012), and it's beautiful here. Reminds me of home in VA. Country, land, and easy to get into the city. As a caveat, the reason we're #4 on this list is simple...there's less to bring the average down. Mercer County and some of the Northern NJ counties all have a mix of affluent areas and slums. Their affluent areas are a lot nicer than Hunterdon, but we don't have the Trenton/Patterson, etc. areas to average it out.
Don't worry. Now, you don't go hitching up your double-wide and trying to make the move to peaceful & sunny Southern California ever. Ever. We don't want your kind here. The Ref said:Could not agree more. DO NOT COME HERE. Especially Palm Beach County.Sarnoff said:Florida.![]()

In some ways, So Cal is a little like Florida. Except with better people, better culture, better weather, and better drugs. Trust me, you just wouldn't fit in.
