What Super Bowl Champ had the best defense? (1 Viewer)

not just during the SB game, entire year

  • 1985 Bears

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • 2000 Ravens

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • 2002 Buccaneers

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters

2002 Buccaneers [ 1 ] [25.00%]

I'm not sure what's funnier, the fact that they are even an option or that they actually got a vote.

85 Bears 12.4 ppg allowed regular season, 3.3 postseason

00 Ravens 10.3 ppg allowed regular season, 5.8 postseason

02 Bucs 12.3 ppg allowed regular season, 12.3 postseason

I voted for '85 Bears but now that I think about the 2000 Ravens defense scored a lot of points that were badly needed because their offense wasn't very good.

If I could vote again I think I would switch to the Ravens.

This was my reasoning, too. The Ravens had the added pressure knowing that their offense, at least early in the season, wasn't going to help them out much. Then again, there is something to be said for the strength of NFC teams in the 1980s vs. the strength of the Bengals and Browns in 2000, but I think you can at least make a case for the Ravens here. :bag:

preetttty bad poll.
:bag:
None of the 70s Steelers teams on this list?
And that's why. The '74 and '75 Stillers allowed 6 and 17 points in the Super Bowl respectively. Incidentally, some QBs you've probably heard of (Tarkenton and Staubach) were each picked off 3 times. Of course it'd still be tough to vote against the Bears, who held the Patriots to -19 yards of offense in the first half of SB XX (yes, that's a minus sign). You could simply change the poll to say what "80's forward..." or just redo the poll to include the Steel Curtain.

2002 Buccaneers [ 3 ] [8.33%] So Cappy and QUEZILLA are acconuted for. Who's the third :lmao: ?
I was number 4. I think that Buc D doesn't get nearly enough credit. Of these three randomly ordered choices, which do you think is best?ETA: I think there a quite a few choices missing from the poll, but I went with what was given.

76 Steelers had the best defense...but they lost in the AFC Championship game that year to the Raiders.75 Steelers D was pretty good though...and they DID win a SB.
Didnt that 76 team give up something like 9 points over a 5 game stretch?
Yes. They had 5 shutouts that season and two games where the opponent only scored 3.
After starting the season 1-4 the 76 Steeler defense gave up a mere 28 points over the next 9 games, unreal. The Raven D was a great defense but for sheer terror you got to like the 85 Bears. How many QBs did they KO? like 9 or 10.I still remember with fondness when they played the Cowboys (44-0) and left Danny White in a cdrumpled heap 3 times, (he kept coming back though). White was asked after the season who the best defense was that he had faced that season and he replyed the Rams, the interviewer remarked that White didnt remember playing the Bears. Man he got his head kicked in, in that game.

Including the playoffs, both the Ravens & Bears only allowed opponents to equal or surpass the 20 point mark three times in their years listed. The Bucs gave up more than 20 six times.

Statistically, Bears & Ravens are pretty tight. An argument could be made either way. Ravens gave up 2.69 YPR, which is just sick. I had to go with the Bears based on a combination of factors, including the deployment of the 46 defense, playoff dominance, and of course, music video.

the Ravens D actually only gave up 4 points per game in the postseason because the 7 points against the Giants in the SB was due to a kickoff return and not against their D.

I have to admit I think the 2000 Ravens defense is always a bit overrated. Any defense that allows Vinny Testaverde to throw for 481 yards in a game doesn't strike me as immovable.

Can't we just say the Ravens were the best D ever against the run, the Bucs were the best D ever against the pass, and the Bears was the best big play D ever?

Baltimore in the three games they gave up 20+ = 3-0Chicago in the three games they gave up 20+ = 2-1 (38 vs. Miami was only loss)Tampa Bay in six games they gave up 20+ = 3-3

I thought that Raven offense was one of the worst ever and that's why their D gets so much love? Statistically, the 02 Buc offense is the worst of the 3 choices in this poll. They only rushed for ~1500 yds, which is a key component of keeping your D off the field.

:hijacked: I think Chase hit the nail on the head when discussing these three teams.ETA: I'm a Tampa homer, but I have a Ray Lewis jersey hanging in my closet. Their rush D that year was filthy.
