Until recently, I needed the TV on to fall asleep, but it would then wake me throughout the night. Now I'm pitch black dark guy.
I found it also will bring out of starting to fall asleep when the tone changes or I start listening to the words and it brings me out of sleep mode.

Darker the better but I need sound to fall asleep, both to settle the mind and drown out the ringing in the ears, so sometimes having a TV on is good.
What about a fan of some sort or a white noise generator? I find that a TV changes pitch/tone too much and then I start focusing on what is being said and it wakes me up a bit.
I have a air purifier that puts out just enough wind noise to block out most outside noises.

We have a ceiling fan and it's not enough (not complaining about a nice quiet ceiling fan though). I do use these videos quite a bit on a timer and they help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOe_xuSuZyM&t=5303s

I have one of those as well but it's in the man cave (the air out there needs "purifying" some times ) ; I do sleep out there some nights though.

I fall asleep with ceiling fan light on and TV on. Wife turns it off when she comes to bed. I don't really care if there is light on - if I'm tired, I'll sleep. I selected Darker is better since I'd probably prefer dark to light, but I'm not one of those freaks that has to put blackout curtains up.

I don't want a nightlight or tv or anything, but I very strongly prefer some ambient light -- the kind that would peek through any normal window treatment -- to complete darkness.

Hello darkness my old friend. I’ve come to sleep in you again…

My wife needs the tv to fall asleep. I need darkness and my CPAP. she goes to sleep around midnight. I go to sleep around 10. She sleeps in a different room now. 😴

I sleep with my TV on. Probably not good for my quality of sleep but I need it.
I used to. Really just needed it to fall asleep. It helped to keep my mind from racing. I've been able to fall asleep better with some breathing exercises and limiting my late evening caffeine

It can be dark or with ambient light (TV, etc). It can be quiet or noisy (Can't hear out of my left ear, so I'll just lay on my right side to regulate volume). I prefer a fan or some air movement. In general I can sleep as long as I'm actually tired and have had a productive day...but it absolutely can't be too hot. I can't sleep when I'm hot.

I like complete darkness, but I have a salt lamp set on super low sometimes that provides some nice ambiance.

Complete darkness and white noise guy now.

My wife bought a couple white noise machines 20 years ago when our kids were born to help them sleep. She uses them now in our bedroom to help herself sleep by muffling the noise from my snoring.

I prefer cool, dark, and quiet. I recently started using a sleeping mask which has been great -- the darkness really helps me return to sleep quickly after waking up in the night. Without it I'll often wake myself up further by looking around and thinking while I lay there.

Strongly prefer darkness and silence. That said, my roommate in college always had the TV on and my wife likes the TV on at night as well as some sort of ambient noise so I've grown accustomed to falling asleep with the glow of the TV and some noise.

Complete darkness and I have to have my sound machine. I also cannot be touching anything other than the bed/sheets or I wont sleep. My wife loves that one. I am the world's most finicky sleeper.

I like darkness and some sound to distract me, so I usually sleep with headphones on and the phone tucked under the pillow.

I run the risk of strangling myself in my sleep or setting the bed on fire when the phone overheats but I sleep like a baby.

I dunno..When I close my eyes, it's dark. So I don't care so much about that. Cool feature.
Like a fan blowing however.

Wireless earbuds/headphones down? Or THIS?

Doesn’t really matter, i prefer a tv for some light / background noise.

Also reminds me of the classic joke

What’s the difference between Light and Hard?

You can sleep with a light on

This. My wife and have a fan at night for cooling but especially for white noise. When we travel, we use a white noise app.

Back before white noise machines it was either a fan or finding a tv or radio station that was off the air. If you listened close there would be wafts of audio from some far away station. Oddly relaxing. 📡

I'm fortunate that I don't have sleep issues. I can fall asleep quickly and generally sleep well. I do wake up a few times during the night, usually just adjusting a pillow or turning on my other side, but fall right back asleep.

I prefer dark, but a little light is ok. Unfortunately, light that comes in the morning from outside will wake me up earlier than I otherwise would get up. During the summer with longer daylight hours, I make sure everything is closed.

I prefer quiet, but I can sleep with noise as well. I can sleep when it's warm or when it's cold, but if a room is too cold, that's the most difficult for me to sleep in.

The only musts I have to sleep are:

1. I need a cover. Even if it's just a sheet. It can be 80+ degrees and I'll sleep fine with a sheet. If it's cold, I need adequate cover to not feel cold or I'll wake up all night long and be miserable.

2. I need 3 pillows to sleep. It's pretty non negotiable. One under my head (can't be too thick), one to hold, and one between legs. I can sleep on either side. But without those, I'll wake up constantly.

Full on white noise and deep, pitch black is the only way I can go down. Unless I'm not sober, then it's whatever.

I need tv or music, preferably tv. I can fall asleep in darkness if I must but if I have a preference I go for first world energy wasting.

Blackout curtains are a top-3 all-time Amazon purchase for me. Where pitch dark rooms and theoretical physics podcasts meet is where sleep thrives.

While I have preferences (dark, white noise, several pillows) my data says that as long as I'm sober I sleep well in all but warm/humid conditions. Without climate control my sleep is total garbage though.

Need tv to get to sleep. Cool room. Once asleep prefer a dark room. Also like lighter blankets… I feel the weight of it on my beautiful feet ( @offdee )

Need as pitch black as possible. Sleep much better without any light at all.

Occasionally will turn on my spotify play list to help me fall asleep. Some times my phone "sleep timer" app doesn't work and I wake up to the music at 4am.

Absolutely no fan on at all. It will activate my acute bronchitis in a horrible way. I have to turn off the AC in Vegas hotel rooms at night because of this, so i crank it all day long while out.

At home, do need a window open for fresh air. Can't sleep if air is not circulating in the room, especially when it's warm outside.

Had a friend give me sleep gummies last month. They have been incredible. Much deeper sleep and feel way more refreshed in the morning.

Darker the better. It is not a huge issue for me going to sleep, but the light is a bigger problem in the AM if I want to stay asleep.

If your house is too warm at night and you cannot win the battle of the thermostat I highly recommend the below product. It is an air conditioner for your mattress and it works really well. It is kindy pricey up front, i think i paid around 500 dollars give your take.

Pitch black is the only way to sleep.
do you have to add ice and water to these every night?

You have to add a small amount of distilled water once every other week.

Clock radio light; small white light from the television box.....but other than that nothing else. I do sleep with a noise app; either ocean waves or nighttime sounds (crickets & wind).
