:lmao:  The responses in this thread are awesome.

I don't think I've ever tried putting socks on while standing ever in my life.  Now that I'm older, not as fit and 3 knee surgeries later, no way would I even try it.  How embarrassing would it be to go back to the orthopedic doc and explain that I blew my knee out again "Putting on my socks standing up".  I'd have to make up some BS story.

That being said I did change my clothes including my socks while driving down the highway late for work when I was in my early 20s.  And they say texting and driving is dangerous...

Do you bend over and tie while the bottom of your foot is still on the floor, like touching your toes?  or do you couch down?  Or go into some weird balance figure 4 leg model and tie it while it's resting on your knee?
Either crouch down/bend over to tie or tie while the foot is elevated in the air. Some shoes I can just slip on though and don't require tying.

leg straight out right angle to body, parallel to the floor and knee straight.

Oh, Sure.  Why didn't I include that as an option?

Sometimes when I put my socks on I like to throw them both up into the air and then do a double backflip spring of the bed and launch both feet into them before they hit the floor.

exactly so.

or, cross the shoe-tying/foot-socking foot over the standing leg... do my business.

I don't have any feet.

Thanks for the painful reminder at a place I retreat to to try to forget....

Weirdo here. If I am business attire I sit, jeans or shorts I stand. So basically sit M-F morning, standing M-F after work and weekends.

I will also add that just recently I noticed a little loss of balance when putting my socks on while standing. I will also admit that it has me a little freaked out. I am starting to notice a decline in my body and what I can do. I have always with relative ease put socks on while standing up to about 2 mos ago. Im still doing it but with less confidence.

Has anyone done the sit down on the floor and get back up test without using your hands? I can still do that so thats good.

sit and stand study

Question for those that sit - are you sitting on your bed or do you have a chair in your bedroom or do you walk somewhere else in the house to put your socks on?
i take off and leave my shoes downstairs.  i sit on the stairs and put both socks and shoes on there.

eta:  after i put on pants.  @Otis

No "I don't wear socks" option?
No. We're footballguys. We're better than that. We wear socks. Maybe no show socks at the right time. But always socks.

Unless we're at the beach or lake or pool wearing flip-flops or sandals. Which is the only acceptable place for flip-flops or sandals if you're older than 10. ;)

Are people sitting to take socks off too?
Of course not.  That would be ridiculous.   :P

Actually, I don't even bend over to remove the socks.  I step on the toe of one sock with the heel of my other foot and pull my foot out while the sock is pinned to the floor.  Then do the other.    Sometimes I will then use my feet to flip the socks into the dirty clothes hamper from the floor.  Most of the time they just stay on the floor until the next morning.  Then while I am sitting to put on my fresh socks for the day, I grab the dirty ones and toss them into the hamper.

In the morning, I put them on while sitting on the bed.

After a shower, I put them on while standing.

I actually noticed this as an early sign that I'm getting old because I would occasionally lean against the wall. I have to consciously make sure I don't do it.

I'm going to have to start keeping an eye out for all these folks randomly falling over due to this apparent growing health issue with balance loss.

Link to exercises?
To clarify. I self identified my symptoms as the same as piriformis syndrome. For me it was while sitting, especially while driving at the end of the day, implying to me that there was a muscle fatigue factor. I experienced this for about a month before starting my stretching routine. The symptoms were gone in about 2 weeks.

I am making an assumption that the stretching helped as I didn't do anything else. It could always be a coincidence though.

I just do 3 things for each side. Probably takes less than 2 minutes.

While sitting.

1st - I pull 1 heel up to my crotch and hold for 10 seconds.

2nd - I put my elbow, same side as the heel pulled into my crotch, on that knee and push down on the knee while pulling in the opposite direction with my upper torso. Hold for 10.

Last - I cross my foot over my opposite knee and turn my body back and to the side of my foot. Hold for 10. If I didn't describe it well, this the same stretch you see people do all the time. Except they're usually sitting on the floor.

Good luck!

www.spine-health.com seems to have a lot of good information.

Slip on shoes I get.

You standing tie crew are some weird folk, though.
When needing to tie shoes it takes various forms (listed from most frequent to least frequent):

- Prop my foot on something (tub, fireplace, stairs, tire/bumper of car)

- Sit

- Bend over and tie them (as I’ve gotten in better shape this is increasing in frequency)

- Kneel on one knee and then alternate

Put on my socks today standing up.  Wasn't that hard, but it definitely wasn't what I usually do.  These were athletic socks.  I don't think I could do dress socks that way, as I'm a little particular about making sure they are on my feet properly (heels are where they need to be, not totally twisted coming up the calf).

I also put my sneakers on standing up, which is pretty normal for me.  I will stand and put my foot on the end of the bed to tie my dress shoes.

I put my socks on in my bedroom while getting dressed standing up. My shoes are on a shoe rack next to my front door where I have an accent chair. I pick out my shoes, sit down, then put on my shoes.

I don't have the balance to be able to stand and put on / take off socks or tie / untie shoes. I wish I could attribute that to excessive alcohol, consumption but the fact is I just don't think that I could actually do it.

I do this also taking off my socks.

I stand putting them on.  I put my foot up on our bed and put left foot on first, then right.  After each foot, I give my lower back a long stretch.

So, what's normal in the sequence of shoes and socks?

For me, I sit down. Right foot sock, then right foot shoe. Then left foot sock, then left foot shoe.

Is this normal?

For work days I stand (lean against the wall in my closet) and put on each sock (I think I start with right foot first) and then put on each shoe.  For non-work days, I usually sit on the couch and put on both socks then both shoes.

Not even a little bit normal. I think I remember on one of the serial killer documentaries that this is one of the definitive signs that you are a serial killer.

Since the pandemic started I've worn socks very infrequently - pretty much only when doing yard work.  WFH means I may wear them 2-3 times a month at most.

Can't disagree with you more on the flip-flops only being for the pool or beach.

i go left sock first, then right sock. then right shoe and left shoe.

varies depending on how drunk i am

Standing up while tying your shoes is the very definition of overachiever IMO
Just read through this thread for the first time. It was amazing to me the effort that was being made by some people here to accomplish this, instead of just finding somewhere to sit.

I usually sit, because it’s just easier than having to balance myself on one foot. The socks I use are mostly work socks, which are fairly long, and sitting is simpler.

I have to disagree. Flip flops are good most of the time here in Florida, because it’s hot and humid, and dealing with sweaty feet is terrible.
