Knives down, forks up.

Narrow side down

Pointy knives can mess you up, forks not so much
I agree. We do everything face up except for steak knives and we do have a ridiculous set of spoons with handles that are too skinny not to slide through the grid. Those bastards go upsdie-down as well (I hate them, if you can't tell :) )

Apparently I’m a down though I never even thought up it until I got to my current office where the silverware tray or whatever it’s called forces you to put them in up or they won’t fit. Which seemed off to me and how I know this answer.

This is the best "What's Normal" yet.
Like everybody else in my life, 75% of you are wrong.

Down, is, of course, the correct answer. I've heard this hogwash about them getting cleaner with the prongs up, but it makes absolutely no sense.

Frankly, anybody that doesn't unload the dishwasher in such a hurry that prongs/blades up is a big problem simply has too much time on their hands. If that's you, good for you, I envy you.

I think it's just a given now that women can't load the dishwasher. Now, because I come behind my wife and fix it, she refuses to load it. Using the same logic, I screwed up repeatedly washing the laundry so she does that now.

I always put them down, wife use to put them up. Then one day I asked...
do you wash your hands before you put dishes away?
She looked at me as if I was :loco: ..... although that is 99% of the time, but I digress

until I pointed out you are grabbing the silverware on the part you eat with.. So now it's dirty again..

All silverware up. Our current dishwasher seems to work best in this manner.

Sidenote, why can my wife not correctly load the dishwasher? It's not about cramming as much stuff in as possible. It's about getting as much stuff in as possible, in a way that they key surfaces will still get clean!

We've been married almost 20 years, this is a fight I have given up on. I just double check everything in the dishwasher before starting it.
I feel this. Mine loves to start it, rarely unload. It’s always like they use it just to hide as much as they can in it.

I strategically screwed up all household chores.

Reasons up- cleans better
Reasons down- no jabby, dishwasher cutlery tray openings allow handle to slip through, grabbing clean food to mouth part of cutlery with fingers makes the cutlery dirty (I accept this answer, but don't really care/agree with it)

Our combo of dw and cutlery tray has our cutlery slipping thtough the tray openings, so we go with down. I was always up before.

Looks like a stock photo of some sort. You don't actually do this do you? I have a Bosch with this rack, but do not use it for silverware. Pain in the *** loading into and removing from those little slots. We use this rack for spatulas, serving spoons, tongs and such. We also have the basket on the bottom rack which is where the silverware goes facing up, except for knives which go blade down.
Yes, that's a stock photo and yes I sure do use that top rack, I think it's brilliant! I can't imagine going back to using that worthless side basket that takes up too much space.

It's a Bosch dishwasher. What would blow your mind even more is how quiet it is. We bought a counter top depth Bosch fridge a couple of years ago as well, it's a pretty cool design.
Holy crap! I'm getting a dishwasher!

(We're looking at videos now.)

I'll add another recommendation. With our old dishwasher (cheapest Amana we could find), we had to wait until bedtime to start it, as our kitchen and main living area is kinda one big communal space. It was loud. With the Bosch, it's so quiet that I can't even hear it if the TV is on. And it does a good job. Going on five years with it.

We use our top rack for silverware as well. Also, any other small-ish item that will fit.

Used to be down until I read the manual that said up. Still put knives down. Our basket connects to the door. I think it's pretty clever

My dishwasher has slots that only allows them facing up.
My knives can go down and I put them down. Annoys me when people leave them up, especially steak knives. That said the forks and spoon can only go up with the basket slots, which I always use, so nothing stuck together. Also, yes, I say I because I’ve got point on the dishwasher. My wife intentionally (she told me) just throws stuff in there knowing I’m anal enough to rearrange.

As far as jabbing yourself when taking them out or dirty hands or whatever, I simply grab the utensil tray out of the dishwasher and dump it on a towel right next to the drawer where they end up going. Then it's much easier/faster to put them where they go without having to bend over repeatedly or hurting myself with any potential lack of coordination.

Down, for all of the same reasons my fellow downers have described. I also group forks together in one spot and spoons together in another. Makes taking them out faster. Just grab the whole bunch at one time and drop in their spot in the drawer.

We built our house and moved in almost three years ago. Bought new appliances, of course, and went for a Bosch dishwasher because it was supposed to be top-of-the-line.

I think I have used it once in 2.5 years.

Forks up.

down or up, that's the correct answer.

my wife has intense back issues- reaching down and out... normally motion for loading a dishwasher... is exactly the motion that exacerbates her back issues. so she either leaves everyting in the sink or puts everything at the front of the dishwasher in the easiest reachable spots. I rearrange all of that, mostly so it will clean better.

and yeah- as somebody who specs these things for a living... it's all Miele all the time. definitely the quietest and most functional... and most expensive and brand-recognized by the richie-rich (like Subzero and Wolf).

BUT... I'd been told early in my career that Miele and Bosch share a production factory- so are essentially the same kit of parts. I'm a big fan of Bosch if I need to shave off a little bit of cash for my clients... but my typical clients almost 100% of the time demand the Miele. So I'm left recommending the Bosch to any of my peers who will listen and are willing to pony up a little more than your standard maytag or kenmore. screw ge.

Heard a comedian recently who debunked this by saying that he and his brother came from the same "factory", but his brother is a doctor. Just because they came from the same factory doesn't mean they are the same :lmao:

We just got our Bosch 800 a couple of weeks ago and at first I thought it wasn't working because I couldn't hear it running.

They actually have an LED light on the bottom so you know when it's running because you can't hear it even standing right next to it. Beautiful.

Only thing I don't like is the drying is meh. I think the drying on the 500 series is actually better since it pops the door open a few inches to dry. The 800 has "upgraded" drying that keeps the door shut but stuff gets kind of musty smelling in there if you don't unload it quickly enough. Prefer the popped open door of the "lessor" model.

Costco just started selling Bosch dishwashers and will do install/haulaway included in price whereas everyone else charges extra for it.
