What's on your hot dogs? (1 Viewer)

Standard is diced onions, deli mustard.

If I can get all the toppings I will go Chicago with pickle, tomato, onions, spicy mustard

ETA: bacon and cheez whiz for a Texas Tommy is pretty damn good too.

The Phillies had a contest before the start of the season for a new "signature" hot dog for Citizen's Bank Park, the enries were:

1)South Philly Hot Dog

An all-beef dog, topped with broccoli rabe, spicy roasted peppers and sharp provolone on a crusty Italian roll

2)Olde Philadelphia Hot Dog

An all-beef dog, topped with Amish pepper hash, dill pickle and yellow mustard on a poppyseed roll

3)Summer Hot Dog

An all-beef dog, topped with cucumbers, pickled onion salsa and ancho pepper sauce on a pretzel roll

The South Philly Dog won the contest and is now being sold at CBP. As wierd as it sounds, ALOT of people were in love with #3. I'm just not sure about the cucumbers.

My typical dog has chili, slaw (mustard or vinegar is what I prefer, mayo will do), onions, hot sauce, mustard

I enjoy other toppings as well, including, but not limiited to:

-pickles

-cheese

-relish

-jalapenos

-sauerkraut

Never had tomatoes in the Chicago tradition, but that sounds really good too.

Never had bacon on a dog, but that sounds great too.

I'd never tell a man how to eat his hotdog, but I've never been a fan of ketchup.

When making myself or given a choice, I always prefer grilled or deep-fried. Boiling a hotdog a serious waste of a hotdog's potetntial. Same with microwaving, which works out the same as boiling.

Try coleslaw if you get a chance. It's good. I never had a 'slaw dog' until I moved to NC. It was awesome.Normally... I'll just have the standard ketchup, mustard, and onion.
Some students from NC got me to try this. I thought they were joking and had to watch them pound one before I would. It was actually not bad. Not my first choice but I'd eat another.

Detroit style - chili, mustard and onions

Slaw dogs are also good though.

I've also enjoyed cheese sauce and bacon on a dog too.

I agree that ketchup doesn't belong on a hot dog.

Nacho cheese sauce. It gets soaked up a little by the bun and adds a spicy smoothness to the dog. :goodposting:

Ketchup is permissible on a crappy Oscar Meyer hot dog, maybe. But you don't put ketchup on a decent dog. You just don't. It's like putting ketchup on a decent cut of steak.
Oh come on.Even though I don't care for steak snobs, they at least make a compelling argument about fine cuts of meat.

But there are no rules with hot dogs. It's a freakin HOT DOG. It's not fine cuisine. Put oatmeal on it for all I care.
It's actually a pretty big no-no to put ketchup on a hot dog. All true hot dog lovers know this.

1. Detroit style: Chili, diced onions, mustard. Chili quality makes a big difference here. Either yellow mustard or spicy mustard is good here.

2. NC style: Slaw, diced onions, mustard. Yellow mustard is better here. Slaw quality matters... can be mayo-based, but not too much mayo.

3. Relish, diced onions, mustard. Prefer Wickles relish, which has a nice kick. Either kind of mustard works great here.

4. Chicago style is great, but I'm not aware it is available anywhere around where I live in Virginia Beach. Years ago, when I was traveling in Chicago, I ate several times at Portillo's, which I gathered was a local chain. Outstanding hot dogs there.

I don't mind adding ketchup to any of these, but I like them either way.

These are great on hot dogs. All by themselves.

I'm also a big fan of a good Italian hot dog. Chili and cheese also works. At a ballgame, spicy brown mustard is the only choice. Ketchup doesn't belong in the same room as hot dogs, sorry RN.

Personally, I prefer a nice beer brat with some hot sauce and kraut. Maybe mustard. No ketchup.

I am a beer snob, coffee snob, steak snob, and pizza snob. I firmly believe Pizza Hut, TGIFridays, and Denny's is fast food and Olive garden is not good italian food. With this in mind, ketchup on a regular hot dog is fine. Settle down, Francis.

Let me get this straight.

You hot dog snobs (did I really just type that?) have a huge issue with people putting KETCHUP on hot dogs.

But you don't seem to have a problem with all of the other suggestions for hot dog toppings in this thread, such as mayo, coleslaw, baked beans, BBQ sauce, broccoli, and Captain Crunch?

:moneybag:

Got it.

Agree. Except they aren't fast nor cheap.

Could you imagine talking to people in person and having someone say "You just don't put ketchup on a hot dog!" :X The only thing funnier would be when they said they were serious!

Never tried this but hot dogs always go with baked beans. Always. Well assuming you're eating real baked beans. So the other way makes some sense.

The part where they believe ketchup doesn't belong on a hot dog isn't what's peculiar to me.It's when they get all indignant about it, as if it's a hanging offense. Why would what *someone else* puts on their dogs bother anyone???

I can see taking a bite of a hot dog... then eating a fork-full of beans before the dog is swallowed. So there's no difference.

That being said probably ketchup is the number 1 ingredient used on hotdogs nationwide. Or pretty high up there if it's not the tops. It's not like hotdogs are a gourmet item anyway. I do love that I could bring a box of Cap'n Crunch and pour it on a hotdog and there would be less indignant people than if I put ketchup on it. Honestly it doesn't sound too bad I might try it some day, maybe some Cap'n Crunch and a dash of milk for flavor.

It's gotta be internet schtick. If anyone is that ridiculous in real life I'm assuming they keep it to themselves. Not all ketchup has sugar added either.

I don't see it as people thinking that putting ketchup on a hot dog is a hanging offense. I just think that it tastes bad, and I like ketchup. I personally don't care what you put on YOUR hot dog. You putting ketchup on your hot dog doesn't offend me, I just don't like it. I'd eat it plain before putting ketchup on it.

Carolina= mustard, chili, slaw, and onion. Burgers, and fried balogna sandwiches as well. Good stuff.

On a hot dog, it doesn't really matter imo.

Beer brats though are only mustard, onions, relish, and kraut.

Pretty sure you shouldn't be putting ketchup on a dog.Diced white onionMustardCelery SaltPreferably on a poppy seed bun.
Ketchup on a hot dog is nasty!Mustard, relish, onionsorKrautor chili and cheese with onions.Ketchup? I'll have to try celery salt. That has me intrigued.

Okay, let's get serious here for a minute.

Do you guys like those hot dog buns on the end of the package? You know... the ones with the side crust?

I used to shave that crust off with a knife, but now I'm thinking about eating it.

Vienna Beef Hot Dog with Mustard, Relish, Onion, Pickle, Tomato, Sport Pepper, & Celery Salt on a steamed poppy seed bun....

Best Dog on the planet

hot dogs are disgusting, but...

but brats or italian sausage are a different story.

mustard, kraut, sweet relish, onions, rule.

i love celery salt, but are they salty enought?
