What's up with Da'rick Rogers (2 Viewers)

Last season, he was a clever dynasty hold, because there was only old Reggie Wayne and one-dimensional T.Y. Hilton standing in Rogers' way.

A year passes, and the same old Reggie Wayne is there. The not-quite-one-dimensional Hilton is there, and is a pretty established player--last year's DHB/Hilton thread is good for some laughs.

And they've added Nicks and Moncrief. Dwayne Allen, the better of their two TEs, returns from injury.

What's the payoff here? Hope that by 2015 he becomes the #2 WR?

The payoff would most likely be 1-3 years. But we all know that a WR can rocket up the depth charts depending on how things play out. He's a top talent. If he was a Burleson type player, there's no upside.

Now that I think about it, the best thing for him might to be cut by the Colts and latch on a team that can force feed him the ball. Way too many mouths now.

Reggie wayne is cleared for contact.

Well, in looking up the contracts, it seems that Brazil, Hilton, and Moncrief are the only WRs under contract for 2015. Whalen's and Rogers' expires after this year, and Nicks was on a one year deal.

I think a reasonable person could assume that Rogers received a RFA tender, Nicks was re-signed after showing at least something, and they move on from Whalen. Might be a reach to assume anything with Nicks, who knows how it turns out with him. But I do have to think he might wanna stick around with Luck.

Yeah and Rogers is going to be pretty clearly ahead of Moncrief having a year under his belt in this system. He could start taking playing time from Nicks or Wayne if either of those guys under performs. Wayne's old and coming off a major injury and Nicks is always hurt. I could see Rogers flashing some this year and securing a starting spot for 2015........

Brazill was suspended for the season after NOT keeping his nose clean. That doesn't necessarily mean that Roger is...

Why is it always the WRs who are problem children? Rogers is another tease; the physical traits and skills to excel and paired with a young, promising QB. Can he dedicate himself to the game and reach his potential? I wonder if a guy like Rogers learns anything from other players? How do NFL guys look at Josh Gordon?

I only have room for so many projects on my roster. And those precious spots are reserved for RBs, which are hard to acquire without a high draft pick. Dynasty FF is like the NBA that way... And Rogers is a project... Probably limited upside in 2014 in that crowded receiving corp. Wayne, Hilton, Nicks and a two TE attack with perhaps either Moncrief or Rogers stepping up...

Long term? Wayne, coming off injury, turns 36 his season. Nicks doesn't look like the same guy to me. Will we see Lazarus Nicks in Indy? Or, has a series of injuries taken their toll? There is also some talk that Nicks took it easy last year in an attempt to stay healthy and reach free agency. May or may not be true as Nicks didn't "cash in" but is on a one year deal. One way or another, I think he has to perform this season to get a big payday.

Best case scenario (for Rogers' owners) is that Wayne and Nicks are gone in 2015. As big targets, Moncrief and Rogers bring something to the table that Hilton doesn't. I've heard good things about Moncrief's skills and work ethic. If I had to take a flyer on either it would be Donte - on the basis of the latter.

As far as the Colts are concerned... Two good TEs and a young receiving trio of Hilton/Moncrief/Rogers seems formidable. Maybe Wayne does one more year. Nicks seems expendable (expensive?) to me, especially if he is looking for a big contract.

Was reading a bit about UDFA Colts WR Eric Thomas and came across this bit on Da'Rick:

http://www.stampedeblue.com/2014/7/27/5938601/some-very-early-thoughts-on-the-colts-wide-receiver-position

However, the two guys that I mainly want to focus on in this article are Griff Whalen and Da'Rick Rogers - one of whom I think has had a terrific start to camp and the other who I think has had a pretty dismal start to camp. Let's start with Rogers.

Da'Rick Rogers is the epitome of a "potential" guy - that is, a guy who fans base their hopes in based off of the potential of what he can be or do. I'm a believer in potential - to a degree. If a guy consistently doesn't show it on the field, the question has to become whether he can ever reach that potential. I'll be honest and up front here and say that, while Rogers had several big plays and moments last year to get fans thrilled about him, I never got on that bandwagon. In fact, I was much more excited about Rogers before he got into games last year, even though his two touchdown game was nice, as was his huge catch against the Chiefs in the playoffs. But when he actually saw playing time, what I saw was a guy who showed his talent but who more than that showed that he had a lot of things left to work on - namely, route running. His poor route running led directly to two interceptions last year that I can remember from memory, and all offseason long myself and other analysts have clamored about how he needs to improve in that area. Because of the attention fans have given him and the potential that I do see in him, I've obviously been watching him closely in the first three practices. And what I've seen has left me really disappointed. On the first day, he had two drops. He looked like he didn't even try on plays where the ball wasn't going to him - a little thing, but one that could play a big difference in a game and something that coaches certainly look at. On the second day, I was watching his route running closely, and I saw rounded off routes. Still. He made a nice snag in double coverage... but the double coverage was because he rounded off his route, allowing the safety to catch up and make it tougher. It's something as simple and meticulous as making a sharp cut on an in route versus making a rounded cut on an in route, but it's something that could make all the difference - in fact, one of Luck's picks last year was because Rogers took too much of a rounded route, if I remember correctly. And then there were the other plays where you could tell that Rogers and Luck weren't on the same page, and that was confirmed by the quarterback pulling him aside as he the receiver came back to the huddle and instructing him. The most encouraging thing about Rogers came on the third day of camp, easily his best day so far. Rogers ran his best routes of camp, which featured sharp cuts and crisp routes. He still didn't get a lot of passes thrown his way in 11-on-11 work, but his routes looked better. Hopefully, that's something that will continue.

.....

I still think that both Rogers and Whalen will make the team, which is the same thing I said before camp started. But I think that Whalen's spot might be more secure than Rogers' (while neither are yet guaranteed a spot by any means), and I also think that if they both make the roster that Whalen could figure more prominently into the offense than Rogers.

Nice find, EBF. It's refreshing to read a piece that doesn't reek of fluff or laziness. The article above is a reminder that Da'Rick is a LONG shot to be fantasy relevant. There's a reason he was a UDFA. I have Da'Rick in 2 dynasties, so I'm rooting for him but he IS mos def a long shot.

Da'Rick Rogers - WR - Colts
Da'Rick Rogers is off to a slow start at training camp.
Per beat man Mike Wells, Griff Whalen has "definitely" outplayed Rogers so far. It's another disappointing turn of events for a very talented prospect fighting for the No. 4 receiver job. Still, he's just 23 years old and Reggie Wayne/Hakeem Nicks are on one-year deals. We're still holding Rogers in deep Dynasty formats where we can.

Ugh. I almost hope they cut him now if he's not going to be part of their plans moving forward. He's still a hold imo because he has shown flashes in actual games and he's in one of the better situations moving forward but I'm not super confident he's going to amount to anything.

INDIANAPOLIS -- It’s only natural for a receiver like Da'Rick Rogers or Griff Whalen to look over his shoulder and wonder how the other player at that position is doing.

The Indianapolis Colts are set (barring any kind of injury) with Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Hakeem Nicks and Donte Moncrief as their top four receivers.

That leaves Rogers and Whalen and the remaining receivers on the roster competing for one or two spots on the roster at that position.

Veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck said wondering how others are doing in the competition is the absolute wrong approach to take.

“Looking at the numbers is the worst thing you can do,” Hasselbeck said. “My advice to those guys is to not look at the guy next to you. You’re not competing with him necessarily. You’re competing against everybody playing football because teams are always looking to find players to help make their team better. Just worry about yourself, do the best job you can. Make the most of your opportunities.”

The Colts haven’t zeroed in on how many receivers they plan to keep on the roster. It wouldn’t be surprising if they kept six receivers, especially since veteran Reggie Wayne is coming off a torn ACL.

“It’s going to be extremely difficult because you see those guys making plays and doing great things,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. “They’ve all had their moments. There’s a lot of guys just trying to make a case for themselves, so these next couple weeks are going to be very, very important for all those guys. Obviously we’re in a position now much better than any time since we’ve been here as far as the roster goes and the cutdowns.”

Rogers and Whalen are the front-runners for the final position or two at receiver.

Both have had their moments at different times.

Rogers spent most of last season on the practice squad before being called up and eventually having his first 100-yard receiving game against Cincinnati. The Colts are enamored with Rogers’ size (6-foot-3) and athleticism. But Rogers, who had maturity issues while in college, got off to a slow start in training camp and was outplayed by Whalen.

I asked a Colts official about Rogers’ lack of production in camp, and he responded, “Just wait until the lights come on. He’ll be fine.”

That person was right.

It started with Rogers making a 45-yard reception in the preseason opener against the New York Jets. Then he had a 14-yard touchdown reception against the New York Giants. Both of those passes were thrown by Hasselbeck.

“He was someone I invested a lot into last year,” Hasselbeck said. “I worked with him a lot. I like him, I trust him. Da’Rick has done a nice job of making big plays in the preseason, but he’s got a ton of room for improvement as far as earning the trust of the starting quarterback and the coaches.”

You might as well call Whalen "Mr. Reliable." He doesn’t have exceptional speed. He’s not flashy. He just simply gets the job done, and that’s all that matters.

Whalen and quarterback Andrew Luck were teammates and roommates in college at Stanford. It’s easy to tell that by their continuity on the field. They showed it last season. They showed at training camp at Anderson (Indiana) University and they showed it again when the two connected for a 5-yard touchdown against the Giants. Whalen is also a candidate to return punts.

It may come down to dependability (Whalen) vs. potential (Rogers) if the Colts go with only five receivers.

“I can’t think about it,” Rogers said. “Start to count numbers and you take yourself out the game.”

“It creeps in your mind," Whalen said. "Like human nature, I can’t completely ignore it. But I know focusing on it and dwelling on it isn’t going to help me. I try to focus on the things I can do. Like practicing hard every day and playing well in the games.”

this guy is a stinker brohans and when i say stinker i mean that he is stinking up the field with his bad play not that he ate something spicy last night so bam avoid hiim like ebola on draft day take that to the bank brohans

any news on this kid?

three games and no stats.

has he even been active?
He's behind Nicks and Moncrief
seemed like he flashed a bit last year.any signs of life here, or is he droppable at this point?
Idk. Moncrief seems like the long-term hold right now. My guess is Nicks won't stay with Indy, and Wayne will be done soon. He might develop over time and certainly could be the #3 there. In a deep dynasty he might be worth a hold.

fair enough.

i guess i was wondering if there was any local chatter on this guy.

Whomever benefits from Luck is going to be a huge dynasty value. Seems like it's Moncrief right now, that's where my chips are.

This guy worth a stash in dynasty?
Take a look a the #### they trot out at the WR position. They have cut 2 bums in the last few weeks. Teams now just roll coverage to Hilton and the game is over. DHB is pure trash. Brazill is just ok. There is nothing else. He gets in the game this week. You will want him on your team before he gets on the field. On top of that I am a guru in evaluating WR talent.
So does the guru think I should pick this guy up?

5 14 192 13.7 38.4 69T 2

5 catches for 192 yards and 2 TDs as a rookie, and this kid is buried?

just seems weird he's not getting more of an opportunity.

He must be a complete knucklehead still no? Kickin the ball in the stands and hanging out with lavon brazil?

grown man on a college campus, moronFeel free to cut in all formats
How dare that 23 year old hang out with 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26 year olds!!!

What's up with Da'rick Rogers? His BAC, apparently.

Continues to boggle my mind how these guys, making this much ching, aren't smart enough to pay $50-$1000 for a cab ride or damn limo service.

Wow what a waste. I really thought he had realized his situation. I was very wrong.

I suppose I could gripe about my fantasy team but it's much sadder this kid is going nowhere fast.

Also, tip of the hat to grove diesel. He wasn't fooled and I was.

Actually it's $3.00 That's what I made selling this guy. He's still talented . Always has been alslwyas will be.

The only way he gets cut is if he steps out of line. They will cut Whalen and put him on PS before they cut Rogers. He is in a fight for the #4 WR spot with Brazil and Moncrief but Moncrief is a body catcher. Lose Rogers and then you have Wayne in what I believe is his final year and Nicks only playing for a bigger payday elsewhere in 2015. Lose them both and you are down to Hilton again.
Nailed it.

Ha. I literally finally cut bait with him yesterday morning to pick up a safety for bye week cover. Hoped he would fall back to me in waivers later in the week, look like I don't have to now. One of the few times I've ever got something like this right, this guy is now toast. Shame though, he looked great in that breakout game last season.

Some of these guys never change. Which could be good advice for those trying to trade for Josh Gordon right about now.

Ok call me crazy but if you're the jets or panthers would you pick him up and kick the tires?

Rex Ryan has to be pretty desperate no? Character concerns yeah but there will be people who think they can "fix" him

Nailed it.
Copy that:

He he doesn't screw up off the field, he makes the team. He'll never make to the practice squad. Someone else will take him.
The only losers here are those who continue to bash him. Most have sour grapes, unable to see his talent, standing by with their mouths open as a superior owner snatches him up on speculation.
The fact that he was inactive makes it more likely they had to bring him in or lose him to another team. Otherwise, they would cut him again and put him on the PS. That isn't happening again. He's on the team for good or they lose him. That being said, his ceiling is way higher than than everyone not named Hilton.
It's all coming together.
:moneybag:

To bad he isn't Josh Gordon who is head and shoulders above this kid when it comes to NFL violations and general stupidity. All you dudes would be screaming from the rafters to give him another chance.......

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't do this. "Kick the tires" on a 23 year old with all the physical tools, is a no brainer decision.

Add Kansas City, San Diego, Seattle, Cleveland HAHAHA, New England, Houston, Tennessee, Oakland, etc.

outstanding post.
Not particularly. No one is taking the moral high ground, everyone is just shaking their head at his squandering of his (alleged) talent.

If he gets back in the league, no one will be upset because they think drunk drivers shouldn't be in the league. There's not really any inconsistency here.
