When do you have to accept/decline a penalty? (1 Viewer)

Boller sucks. Marvin Lewis could have crutches his way five yards into the end zone with seven downs.
Boller threw 2 TD's. The refs took one, then gave him 4 more downs, and Heap took the other one away....
Heap's second foot was out of bounds on the first one. The pass interference actually gave the Ravens a second life.
This would result in an interesting tactical scenario. Can they defer declining/accepting the penalty until the result of challenging the TD called on the field?
That's a great question. I don't know.
So assume it looked like Heap stepped out of bounds. If he did, the game is over right there and accepting the penalty would actually hurt you. But the called play on the field was a TD. Can you ask for a review first and then decline the penalty if he is ruled out of bounds?

Good question. I don't know the answer, but I'd assume they'd let you wait for the decision until after the play in question is resolved. I would like to know the answer to this as well!

My guess is you have to make a decision based on the call made on the field. If they review the play and it's overturned, they would probably give you the choice again whether to accept or decline.

Would not have been a decision for the Bengals as it was in the last 2 minutes so its up the replay booth to determine if a review would have been needed.

Right, but I'm sure they would have been afforded the opportunity to change whether they accept or decline a penalty if the booth review determined a different outcome.

Not pretending to know the rules, but how is this different from letting you wait until after a measurement to decide?
:) It's all in the rules.Measurements are used for two different purposes: (1) so refs can decide if a first down was made and (2) so coaches can see how far away they are. Instant Replay is not set up that way. They force the refs to make a call on the field and go with it until a review is asked for. With measurements, refs aren't forced to make a decision prior to measuring. But, it is interesting to think about the similarities of the two events.

This actually raises another interesting question.Does the booth have to wait until the penalty is declined before they can review the events on the field? Also the hypothetical stands with the addition that there is at least 2:00 on the clock.
