Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (1 Viewer)

So are these supposed to be our "favorite" songs from "The Rest" or just a bunch of obscure songs from obscure countries to impress our magic football friends?

Asking for a friend.
The degree of “edgy and cool” is up to you.
I'm not sure why this is being brought up so much in this thread. Wasn't much at all in the first 2 other than joking about Elvis Costello.

Yeah, given our demographic here, the US/UK artists are going to be the most familiar so maybe we don't have as many go-to bands but there are plenty of other very well known and beloved bands (and some lesser known) from those other "obscure" countries. :-)

really want a top 50 list ...
Reaction.

Man there are some fantastic carribean disco songs out there.
Got at least 3 earworms in at the moment
I'm partial to Jamaican Dance Hall.
Holy ****! It just dawned on me that I've made a massive oversight and my list is already submitted

just withdraw that list now Manster ...this is just the beginning.

I did a couple quick adjustments, good to go..... and I don't think I created any more work for K4.....at least I hope not

Using some of @Pip's Invitation format here for my top 31.

Gender (exact same as Pip, though the other data shows the lists to be plenty different):
  • Men or male-fronted bands: 26
  • Women or female-fronted bands: 3
  • Bands that have co-frontpeople of both genders: 2
Country (adds up to more than 31 due to mixed bands):
  • US: 15
  • England: 14
  • Australia: 7
  • Canada: 4
  • Scotland: 4
  • South Africa: 4
  • Netherlands: 2
  • Belgium: 1
  • Denmark: 1
  • Germany: 1
  • India: 1
  • New Zealand: 1
  • Zanzibar: 1
Decade:
  • 1960s: 1
  • 1970s: 7
  • 1980s: 14
  • 1990s: 2
  • 2000s: 6
  • 2010s: 1
As with Pip, the lack of 90s representation is because I listed to a lot of grunge and alternative, which was more US-based. The heavy 80s representation is due to growing up in the early years of MTV (high school class of 86), which is where most of my exposure to non-US/UK music came from until streaming and music file sharing took off.

I don't think there is really a Big 3 in this one. I think there is a Big 1, and I have one song from that artist.

I chose no more than one song per artist, but did choose one song from a band and another solo song by the frontman of that band.

Many of my 80s picks were also songs that I was introduced to by MTV.

A lot of us have been doing music drafts for 20 odd years. It gets repetitive. New formats bring new life.
If people select their favorites, all good. I look for a challenge. Picking 31 countries is hard enough. I am now at 62.....thanks Argentina. Then i pick a favorite song from each country. In a lot of cases its the only song I know or can find.

I think your approach will be fun. Not everyone has taken their "favorites" in these countdowns. To start with, many people limit themselves to one per artist, which doesn't necessarily align. In the first countdown, someone took all female artists. Another person avoided anything earlier than the 1990s IIRC, just to highlight other eras than those that usually get the attention. All good.

Are we saying "Macarena" will be a top contender here?

geezus ...come on guys ...can't think of a much worse playlist killer.
I was unfortunate enough to get married (for the first time) in 1996, when it was mandatory at weddings.

I remember that's the same time when that rash of wedding stabbings occurred
Most of them got off by pleading temporary insanity.

I'm listening to my mix and realizing I am neither edgy nor cool. Down to my 36 but just have to decide which are the last five out. Oh, and put them all in order.

My sympathies. Did you also play "In the Mood" with chickens?
No, thankfully. But we did have The Chicken Dance for the younger cousins.

I am completely fine with whatever direction or whoever you want to take. I was just under the impression that this started off as a bunch of idiots taking their top 31 favorite songs of all time. It has since morphed into - "hey I just discovered this awesome Finish death metal group yesterday and they are now in my top 31 songs of all time!" - again, which I'm fine with, I just need rules and structure.

My initial "chalky" list will be boring, so I'm pivoting to "Edge Town©"

What rules and structure there are can be found in the first post of this thread. The rest is up to you. Some people will have 31 songs that are all beloved by the music-writer hivemind. Some people will have 31 songs that most of us have never heard of. And everyone else will be somewhere in between.

I like the chalky lists.

I like all lists.

My list is going to be favorites, except limiting to one per artist. Most of the "cool and edgy" stuff I listen to won't make it, because when it comes down to it, my favorites are mostly on the mellow side.

Hey, did you see my list?!

I think for me it's a clash of two worlds......the old, the new. The old safe wins out mostly, so mostly chalky stuff, to me anyway....one man's chalk is another man's skip.

I like to throw in some stuff that's more recently discovered. It's just what I listen to. Honestly, I found this list hardest by far cuz I don't listen to a ton of music that's not American, or British......so I just grabbed a bunch of stuff I listen to a lot and called it good.....also, I may have taken advantage of some bands who were DQ'd for whatever reason in the previous drafts.

Well I landed on 63 countries and Im afraid there will be no room for Portugal and Carmen Miranda.
Romania is the latest country with a conundrum.....Georghe Zamfir and one of his pan flute songs or Enigma....

Fine - following Pip's formula, here we are:

Men or male-fronted bands: 20
Women or female-fronted bands: 8
Bands that have co-frontpeople of both genders: 2

White: 16
Nonwhite or mixed: 15

Country representation (adds up to more than 31 due to mixed bands):
US: 13
UK: 9
Canada: 6
France, Benin: 2
Everyone else with 1: Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Haiti, Australia, Netherlands, Trinidad, India, South Africa, Colombia, Mali, Iceland, Tanzania, Pakistan

Decade:
'60s: 1
'70s: 6
'80s: 10
'90s: 8
'00s: 2
'10s: 4

Surprisingly strong showing for the 90s here.

I wonder what the highest number of countries from one artist will be? I smell a contest question!

If you exclude the US/UK because of the various "also includes" and "they weren't eligible for ___ reason," I think it's pretty clearly Canada.

Not highest number of entries for one country - "highest number of countries from one artist." In other words, how many different countries of origin will be represented by one band/artist?

I have six lists in and will start processing them tonight. As a result, the "one change" rule goes into effect starting now. Each person will be allowed only one change to their list, and it should be a one-for-one swap. Submit carefully.

Also a new rule: if you don't send links, then I won't post links. Simple enough, and most people don't use my links anyway.

France, Benin: 2
Everyone else with 1: Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Haiti, Australia, Netherlands, Trinidad, India, South Africa, Colombia, Mali, Iceland, Tanzania, Pakistan
Damn. I dont have Benin, Cuba, Tanzania or Pakistan in the 63 countries i found.
I can definitely lose Kenya and Roger Whittaker and Sri Lanka for the Seekers.
My indian entry is Cliff Richard so can do with improvement.

PM coming your way

I have two Cuban artists on my list. :oldunsure:

FYI, in these endeavors we don't reveal whom we're taking prior to their being posted on the countdown. Makes for "excitement." :)

Exhibit 'A' for me, today I learned that an all-time favorite tune is now a contender in this contest by way of two of the three orginal members hailing from Ukraine and Japan. Pretty, pretty groovy.

I thought I saw a list of all the artist deemed ineligible for the last two, um, events. I went through the thread but couldn't find it. Any help?
