Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (4 Viewers)

I have 87 artists with another 20 or so still possibly in the mix ...

mostly taken from the prior ineligible lists and then some routine google search by some major countries ...not hard

what's tough is - when/where to mix in some less prodigious artists for personal preferences - I mean everything I put on my list is going to be stuff I really like, just I'm going to have to make some very tough choices to remove from classic/very popular artists with some artists that are a bit more personal to me

tough trade-offs

Ship it. Thanks

X-posted from the Brits thread.
6 short clips from where we were standing on the second night. Only short clips because quite frankly I can't not sing for much longer than that View attachment 3478
So my list may or may not just be DMB :lmao:

It's official, I've narrowed down my favorite songs by my all-time band down to 31. Talking to myself, I think I'll restrict the final playlist to five.

OK, here's what we'll do.

Catch-all countdown (anything ineligible in the prior two) will begin March 20. Lists will be due March 17, after which I will not accept lists. I also will not accept lists before March 1. The latter is to cut down on post-submission changes and also to give me a couple weeks of a break.

I'll start a new thread later today with more details.

She did not include that in the rules here after all. She explained below.

Thanks for asking about that. You can send whenever you wish. I left the March 1 bit out here because I added the rule (good suggestion in the other thread) limiting changes to submissions. As to the other reason, if I don't feel up for collating data before then, I'll just...not do it. :)

Well, looks like @KarmaPolice can't be bothered to read what @krista4 has to say.

Evidence of eligibility: Per Dr. O's excellent suggestion, when submitting your list, please also add, after the song and artist names, a very brief indication of why it's eligible here (i.e. “British Band, American Singer”; “Japanese”, “Mexican”; “Mexican and US”; “it’s Neil Young”)." A reference to the ineligibility lists for the prior drafts will suffice in cases where they were on the posts no one read. I will not be vetting these and will work on the honor system. If you claim, for instance, that Sixpence None the Richer would be eligible because they are Nigerian, we're going with that, but you'll risk the scorn of your fellow posters.

@timschochet , not picking on you as I'm sure others would forget this as well, but just a reminder to include this somewhere when you send a list. I'll PM you as you don't need to do this for some that are obvious to me, but I'll ask you to provide the info for a number of your selections. Thanks, all!

btw ****ers ...vetting many of these "partially ineligible" groups??

yeah, not easy - but that's part of the scavenger hunt.

I'm kind of excited about discovering a new part of a group that I always really liked (early stuff), but didn't realized how great they were - and gonna have to ignore what most here think of their most popular songs.

this exercise is not for the weak ...or the the lazy ...do your work, put in the time - YOU'RE NOT PUKING JOHNSON!!!

I was going to eliminate all U.S./U.K. bands from my list, but there was one dude I just don't think I can tell him sorry, not today.
I'm going to try to do this.

I have several favorite US and UK bands that were ineligible for various reasons in the previous two threads but I've found that I also have more than enough artists that meet this thread's criteria that do not include those others. Not sure I can stop myself from including some of those previous ineligibles, though.

I'm putting in four hours a day!

I love that people are going in this direction, but I don't think I'm entirely there. Don't be surprised to see Wings or John Lennon on my list, for instance, which I assume Dr. O was referencing with his post. It's just not "fair" to my list not to have some of my absolute favorites. The vast majority of mine won't fall into this category, but a few will.

Can we safely say that there are a Big 3 that fell between the cracks? Q-TP-FM

No problem. Just sent it to you.

This might be the most fun countdown, as I expect to learn about soooooo much new stuff. :)
Exactly how much do you know about Chinese Diva’s?

Btw what the hell is Puerto Rico and Guam in all this? US or not?
Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Monserrat, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar and Turks and Caicos for the UK?

We didn't really discuss Puerto Rico or Guam, I think. The British stuff we did not include. I'd just say everything you named is eligible if you want it.

Aruba, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take you to
Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego
Baby, why don't we go? (Ooh, I wanna take you down to Kokomo)
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down in Kokomo

This is you, right?

I bet he threw you off by claiming Sixpence None the Richer are Angolan.

WAIT! I was going to make espresso!

You broke my code.
And to be 100% clear, I’m not implying it would be wrong to do so - it just didn’t “feel” right to me seeing McCartney and Lennon on a “non UK list” - and I do understand why Wings and some Lennon were ineligible.

It’s actually a bit painful to leave off the song I wanted to take from Double Fantasy - but the song has such minimal contribution from Yoko, it’s hard to call it a “non-British” song.

It’s not like I’m scrambling to find filler stuff and as I did say I am including the mixed British/American bands and bands that would be considered British or American but weren’t eligible in other two because of long time band members born outside of the US/Britain.

Hard to say how Wings wouldn't fit perfectly into what you've described above. I can't see any distinction between them and Queen or The Police, which I'd also take if I liked Queen or The Police. The argument is more difficult to make for a Double Fantasy song for the reasons you mention, and you might actually have convinced me not to do it (which I know wasn't your intent and that you don't care if other people do). To me that is more like taking "Another Day" or a song from Ram because they technically were ineligible having been attributed to Paul and Linda. But Wings were a real band with real members, some of whom were American (not just Linda).

I've no need for filler stuff either. I want Wings on my list because they legitimately have one of my top 31 songs that weren't eligible before. However, they actually have more than one song that would be in my top 31 if I weren't sticking to one per artist, so I've drawn a line there that others might not. People will draw different lines where they want and some of it is a little random. It'll be fun in any case.

Yeah, I'm kind of tempted to shift the "well the whole band was from Birmingham except for the Bulgarian drummer" type selections to the last n out

Am I alone in feeling like this will be the hardest list yet? I'm having a hard time coming up with artists that I would choose one song over three, or four, from bands I really like.

So right now I'm leaning towards filling my list with old favorites.....or I could hit you guys with more 10 minute fuzz/stoner metal songs than you would ever want to hear. 🤔

Even though Yoko didn't participate on that particular song that you love, she was still a big part of the album. It isn't a "non UK list" anyways, it's a World list, and that includes artists/bands in America and the British Isles that got the shaft in the first two countdowns for having mixed nationalities involved on albums. If I do a list, I'll be giving John some love.

I get that for sure and I’m definitely including some of those UK and US acts because they couldn’t be represented before. Some acts just don’t feel right to me in here. If/when those acts do make the playlist I’ll gladly listen and enjoy.
I’m kind of a weirdo though.

I didn't do the other 2 but that's the same spot I'm in. I have classic rock, stoner rock, thrash and doom metal and a dash of alt rock.
