Where in the world are the middle-aged dummies? Worldwide top 31 song countdown. (3 Viewers)

simey:

Emotion – Samantha Sang (Australia)
I actually always though this song was the BeeGees.

The Bee Gees do sing the choruses, I believe (could be Barry Gibb harmonizing with Sang, have to go look it up). EDIT: It was just Barry and Sang harmonizing the chorus.

It's a lot like Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" -- Michael Jackson's work on the chorus gave that song that prime MJ oomph. Barry Gibb was good for that, too.

titusbramble:

Routainen Maa - Heikki Mustonen (Finnish)

Note from titus: Included Youtube link as I do not know how well Spotify will pick up soundtracks to Finnish video games which are not yet out of early access on Steam

Raging weasel:

Strong Reflection – Mars Red Sky – France
These are two songs I did not know, that were really cool listens and fit well back to back as they both had an ethereal sound.

Those did flow well. Some of the transitions on these playlists are going to be brutal, though.

OH was passing through as I came to "Strong Reflection" on the list, stopped to play air guitar, and asked me who it was, saying "It sounds like music *I* would like." That one got the seal of approval from him; he said it sounded like the band Dead Meadow (whom he loves).

My Mars Red Sky pick bounced off and around on my list quite a few times. I drafted it in G4 which is one reason I was going to leave it off this list but some of the other options are 8-14 minutes long so figured I'd give you guys(other than Pip) a break.
glad 2 people have liked it so far

Nice! I have a couple Dead Meadow songs in my rotation of stoner rock.

I knew 20 songs, or less than half of them. This is probably going to be par for the course, as there is a lot of territory I haven't explored in what's eligible for this one.

Known-to-me favorites from #31:

Open Letter (to a Landlord) -- Living Colour (Scorchy)
Beds Are Burning -- Midnight Oil (AAABatteries)
Wake Up -- Arcade Fire (Krista4)
The Chain -- Fleetwood Mac (Worrierking)
Save It for Later -- The Beat (Hov34)
Lights -- Journey (Hawks64)
Juke Box Hero -- Foreigner (Just Win Baby)
My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) – Chilliwack (Zamboni)
Precious -- The Pretenders (Zegras11)
Under the Milky Way -- The Church (Binky)
If You Could Read My Mind -- Gordon Lightfoot (MAC 32)
Stupid Girl -- Garbage (Sullie)
It's My Life -- No Doubt (Ditkaburgers)

I don't think we've ever interacted or spoken to each other but most of the time you do a list of your "known-to-me" favorites I find my selections on there and I always think "I''ll bet if Pip and I went on a road trip and one of us drove while the other picked the songs, I don't think we'd skip each other's songs much less argue about each others selections!" :)

OH passing through again, "This is that 'Fighting Without Borders' song or whatever." Me: "Battle Without Honor Or Humanity"? OH: "Yeah, close enough."

He did much better on "peas and carrots," which he somehow managed to identify and pronounce the name of perfectly. I loved that one, by the way.

Don Quixote:

Para Lennon E McCartney - Milton Nascimento (Brazil)
This may have been the first song that I had in a particular location that never moved around. If we did US/UK/catch-all lists in a different order, I may have put elsewhere (or maybe picked one from the Clube da Esquina album, which is one of my favorite albums in any language), but could not shake it from #31 as it seemed to function almost like a transition from the UK to the world lists.

I mentioned earlier that my enjoyment from Brazilian music may stem from their musicians being a bit Beatles-obsessed too — Milton Nascimento and this song (“para” meaning “for” Lennon and McCartney) some good evidence of that. Song a bit about how like them and wishing would pay attention to his part of his world. (Translated lyrics). But Milton Nascimento’s voice and music among those that I can enjoy without even understanding what he is saying.

Everything new that I've gotten to so far is real good to my ears (but I haven't gotten to William Hung yet). Random observations and anecdotes:

Just Win Baby:

Juke Box Hero – Foreigner (American and English band members)

This inspired much air-guitaring among myself and my peers in middle school.

DrIanMalcolm:

Get Lucky - Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers) (France/US)

I can't determine whether I've actually heard this before. I've certainly heard Nile Rodgers play guitar like that before. Either way, it's a banger.

Sullie:

Stupid Girl – Garbage - Stupid gurrrl is Scottish

I "saw" Garbage open up for Smashing Pumpkins in 1996. In quotes because we didn't get inside the building until toward the end of their set. However, they were so loud that we could hear this song long before we reached the parking lot (for those who know South Philly geography: At the corner of Broad and Pattison, we could hear this coming from what is now called the Wells Fargo Center.)

The Dreaded Marco:

Point That Thing Somewhere Else - The Clean

Sounds like Joy Division to me, which is always welcome.

Mister CIA:

Hey ***** - Izïa - France

Oh this is badass.

Raging weasel:

Strong Reflection – Mars Red Sky – France

The kind of noise my ears love. I would have guessed this was a Manster pick.

simey:

Emotion – Samantha Sang (Australia)

I knew/remembered this wasn't a Bee Gees song because it was identified on an ad for one of those K-Tel albums. My elementary school classmates were convinced it WAS Bee Gees and I would argue with them about it constantly. Good preparation for the FFA, I guess.

krista4:

Wake Up – Arcade Fire (Canada)

Technically Canada/US, the Butler brothers are from Texas. :nerd:

MAC_32:

If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot

This brings back fond memories of my dad. He and my stepmother would often sing along to this album (though their favorite track was his cover of Me and Bobby McGee).

New Binky the Doormat:

Under The Milky Way - The Church

Loved this when it was picked up by US radio stations. I'm not sure if I've ever heard another track by them.

Pete Townshend has written so many brilliant songs that, especially by the 80s, he had no reason to do a cover in his live sets. But he covered this. The first time he played it, he made sure Dave Wakeling was there to see it. Both the original and his cover are fantastic.

zamboni:

Of COURSE the guy whose username is hockey-related would pick this. I loved this when I heard it as a kid -- wish the band had more success in the US.

AAABatteries:

Beds Are Burning - Midnight Oil

This is my go-to when I do my Peter Garrett impersonation. You don't want to hear that unless we're both drunk.

It's like dooshy Harrison Ford never wasting a chance to talk about how much he disliked the Han Solo role - until, I'm guessing, each paycheck reminds him he loves it.
My brother, his ex-gf, and some of his friends lived in Jackson Hole, WY for a bit back in the 90s. They all worked in hospitality during that time. Harrison lived there (and may still), and my brother said he tipped really good, and he always let strangers take a picture of him and them. His ex-gf has a picture of her and Harrison together. He could be a d-bag, but my brother's experience around him was a good one.

My Girl (GoneGoneGone) - leave it to Zamboni to properly own the quintessential hockey song, eh? FlinFlon, Manitoba loves it (and me!)
Bobby Clarke’s hometown. Love those old pics of his teeth gone, gone, gone.

CLARKIE!!

Chilliwack was my first cut, so #32 for me ... i sent this to our hostess K4 in a pm, but now i gotta:

"i had a great Chiliwack story, too, which is why it was tough to cut ... i made a pilgrimage to FlinFlon, Manitoba many years ago, as it were the childhood home of one of my 3 sports idols growing up - Bobby Clarke.

i hopped in a taxi/car service shortly after i arrived, as i was booted out a watering hole (yeah, i was so effin' bombed that CANADIANS! kicked me the hell out) 🤔

anyways, the driver lowered his radio to ask where i were heading ... after i told him, he cranked that chit UP, and i yelled OH, S***! RECESS MONKEYS!!!

he glared back at me like i just booted his sister in the jimmies, and yelled CHILLIWACK, MOTHER*******!! You're in FlinFlon!!!1! CANADA!!!1!

let's just say my biz in Saskatchewan got delayed a few more days than i initially planned on my "pilgrimage" taking me"

CLARKIE! ❤️
CHILLIWACK!
FlinFlon!

It reminded me of Elder, whom Manster drafted repeatedly in the US countdown. And most of their songs are mega-long too.

I totally agree. You often pick stuff that I like, or that I had forgotten how much I liked.

I Believe I Can Fly - William Hung - Hong Kong

John Maddens Lunchbox:
She Bangs - Ricky Martin - Puerto Rico

I Believe I Can Fly - William Hung - Hong Kong
This one we’re allowed to make fun of, right?
Mock Mr Hung all you like.
I realise quality is low on this track. Real ****in low.
It was my 62 ranked song from my 62nd country.
Yes Jan Hammer and Crocketts Theme deserves a place instead of that one

However........every time i hear it, it makes me laugh out loud. A long time ago at work on a quiet saturday afternoon, I played some songs to lift spirits. An Austrian song with cows mooing over a dance beat, Check out the Chicken by Grandmaster Chicken and DJ Duck all got a laugh or two, but when the Hung interpretation of I Believe I can Fly was put on their was pandemonium. Ears covered, laughing, crying, but the one reaction that still cracks me up is the guy who laughed continuously for an hour, tears rolling down his face. He had such an infectious laugh too. Thats why I kept it in. The memories.
Mt Hung had such a great attitude in his American Idol audition as well “I already gave my best. I have no regrets at all”

As for She Bangs, its a cracker. My 31st ranked song. Now did I move it up a few slots to tie in with Mr Hung. Of course.

All serious from now on.

Yeah, I never heard of Elder until then but have liked what I've heard so far. Stoner rock bands often have that same sound which is probably why I like them. I often have to check my own playlist to see who I'm listening to. With a bunch of long and mostly instrumental songs it's hard to tell what's what sometimes 😆

I saw Umphrey's McGee a bunch of times in the '00s and had the same issue with them. Loved most of it, couldn't tell which song was which much of the time.

Apologies to everyone for not announcing my sabbatical. Sorry to concern anyone. Not sure who found me on Social media but kudos to you. I just had to take a break and felt it best to just log off and run. That wasn't well thought out. Anyway I am alive and kicking and sure you'll be in better spreadsheet hands now as I surely am no maven.

Murder city nights!

Good time rock n' roll here. Love it. Own this on record, actually. Just dig the vibe of this song. Should be played in an old Dodge Charger or something.

Binky would have a perfect gif to add here, I'm sure of it.

I'm so sad that he won't be here for the countdown that I almost want to wait a month to finish it. But I won't do that to the rest of you!

It's too bad that he won't be able to participate. I'm surprised we are still getting banned after the shuttering of the PSF, but I figure GG posts are really a hidden sociopolitical manifesto (they sort of always wind up that way) so maybe I'm not too surprised.

That's not to slag GG. It's just an observation about those threads. There's always a less-than-hidden "gotcha" angle from which he can make a point that is often sociopolitical. Binky took the bait, I think.

He’s a good kid so I’m glad he found some success - but it was a novelty record based on how bad he was. I apologize if the song does make some one happy and they do enjoy it, but….

Maybe I’m way off base but I feel like maybe that’s a “troll” account trying to be funny or perhaps I’m just missing some inside joke.

ETA: I re-read your post again. I guess you actually are both accounts? Now I guess I'm part of the inside joke.

Portrait Of A Man (Live at Auckland Town Hall) - Marlon Williams

Am I wrong to suggest that this sounds like a bluesier Jeff Buckley?

I didn't hear that but will definitely be giving this one more listens, so I'll have to keep that in mind next time. This made my new-to-me-favorites playlist, too. The Dead South song as well.

I put the Mdou Moctar song on the playlist, too, though OH listens to him a ton, so it's likely not actually new to me.

Embarrassed to say I didn't know the song, Round 2: "Pass The Kouchie." This was great. Of course I know the "other" one that was based on it.

I always forget how good "Beds Are Burning" is. Still sounds fresh to me a million years later.

It's really the vocal, particularly certain inflections, that triggered the Buckley memory. The music isn't overly Buckley-esque.

Not sure I had heard the original Pass the Kouchie before. I knew it existed. Was surprised that it has pretty much the same arrangement as the more famous one.

Beds Are Burning -- which was the first exposure to Midnight Oil for myself and many Americans my age who were in high school at the time -- really stood out when it stormed our airwaves. US and UK artists just weren't putting out anything that righteous or passionate at the time (Ireland was a different story, of course.) It prompted me to find Diesel and Dust, all of which is brilliant, and eventually to track down all their albums, of which there are no weak ones.

Why did I pick "Beez In The Trap" by Nicki Minaj?

I don't know. I guess it's because I remember driving one morning on an interstate and the song came on and I just went bonkers trying to freestyle with that beat. I also loved her use of "Beez" like "Be is," which is a heavier and more grammatically incorrect version of "I be in the the trap." It goes one step further to be like "I be is in the trap" and it sounds like "bees" and the imagery is of bees in a trap, so it cracks me up. It serves a dual role, both of which are absurdist.

That's not too high a praise for Nicki. She seems to frequently do stuff like that with language whenever I hear her. This is the most notable instance.

It's just an inventive use of language and wordplay, and it's number 31!

I don't know in some areas of our Country there's more dogs roaming the aisles than brands of corn-flakes.

Lol. Crazy corn flakes. At least they don't get rambunctious and destroy the place.

I didn't bring it up in the other threads because I don't want to open a festering wound, but the other night at the supermarket a dog got into the flower display and crashed the vases. The staff was none too happy to have to clean up broken glass.

It was not a guide dog, either. Just your average ol' misbehavin' mutt.
