The Third Man Theme - Anton Karas (Austria)
(duplicate, second vote)

Didn't get a chance to comment when @Don Quixote took this but love the pick. This will most likely inspire me to go watch the movie for like the 10th time.

Yea I like this pick too. Before Spotify I'd use a USB drive in my truck with tons of songs on it, and this in the mix. It would come on and friends would go "what the heck..." and by the end they were loving it.

I am in Manhattan on vacation which is why I haven’t posted more. Some great selections yesterday and today, and a whole lot of new stuff for me to listen to.

drink 🍸 invite is always open.

i mean, come to NYC and not see me?

- all bets are off if you are in Manhattan, Kansas, tho .. we just refer to our Manhattan as "the City"

Everything She Does Is Magic - The PoliceZegras11Popo classic
Goodbye Stranger - SupertrampAAA Batteriessuch a great album - off of Breakfast In America (my #26)

new to me fav:

Shuke's 11 minute stoner tune - "Space to Bakersfield" - I got high just listening to it

Pip’s Invitation:

Low Rider - War (US/Denmark)
(new artist)

This never fails to get me moving. It's got an incredible groove and displays all the strengths that made War one of the best bands of their era. I have seen War live, but I will discuss that when we get to a song by an artist that was also on the bill.
Looking forward to this. I never saw War in concert, but I wish I had. They kind of presented as goof-balls like a soul version of Dr Hook, but they were full of ringers (so was Dr Hook).

anti-Thumper Thumping:

"Californication" is an incredible toon from a band i cannot even remotely stomach ... but, man, did they HIT on that groove & melody & theme.
I didn't realize the Chilis qualified here due to Flea being born outside the US - thought he was American. I figured it was due to Hillel Slovak, although he was unfortunately long gone by the time this came out.

I knew 20 songs today (not counting my own), including repeats.

Known-to-me favorites from #24, not counting my own pick and Could You Be Loved, which is known to be on my list. (But I "own" it! Ha!)

Chest Fever -- The Band (KarmaPolice)
And the Cradle Will Rock -- Van Halen (jwb)
Radar Love -- Golden Earring (Sullie)
Goodbye Stranger -- Supertramp (AAABatteries)
Everything She Does Is Magic -- The Police (Zegras11)
Magic Carpet Ride -- Steppenwolf (Mt. Man)
Hallelujah -- Leonard Cohen (Landryshat)
Tusk (live) -- Fleetwood Mac (Mrs. Rannous)
Underwhelmed -- Sloan (Worrierking)
It Can Happen -- Yes (Andy)
Neighborhood #2 (Laika) -- Arcade Fire (Rockaction)
Leave It -- Yes (Doug B)

A double shot of 90125!

It wasn't during their prime (I was way too young for concerts during that period), but it was very enjoyable.

Flea

... billed as "Mike B, the Flea" in the classic Punxploitation flick Suburbia , directed by scene chronicler/gadfly Penelope Spheeris (yes, the same from "DoWC, both I & II)

he kinda soils that piece of work, too ... but it's bearable 'cuz the rest of it is so friggin' cheezy & gooey with "troubled punk youth" tropes ... oh, and btw, these were the hardcore nihilist types, not yer uber pc cabal that would ensue.

it's an artifact ... and a damn goodt one (featuring D.I., the Vandals, T.S.O.L.) - if anyone is interested, that is the whole flick i linked, so pack a lunch (and a safety pin) 🧷

Summer concert series line-up at Chateau Ste. Michelle winery just came out. RINGO!!!! on June 4. Lots of great-looking shows, including recent pick Elvis Costello & the Imposters playing with Nick Lowe and his band. That show happens while I'm in the UK. :kicksrock:
Will you be boogaloo-ing to the Ringo show provided the online ticket vendor acknowledges that you exist?

And the Cradle Will Rock - Van Halen
(new artist)

HAVE YOU SEEN JUNIOR'S GRADES.

Radar Love - Golden Earring (Netherlands or Holland or Dutch or something, I don't know.)
(new song)

Always like a good two-hit wonder band in the mix.

Goodbye Stranger - Supertramp
(new song)

Now, is this a great song, or is it a great song made greater by The Office, when Michael sang "Goodbye Toby" to the tune of this song?

And with that in mind, I give you Toby's return.

Impossible to see DoWC Part II mentioned and not think of this embarrassing display by Chris Holmes
... in my haste of reading this, i saw it as "Chrissie Hynde" 😅 and i was all like "'da hell he talkin' about"

PS - Holmes is prettier ... NTTAWWT

pps - Blackie, too

🤘

Had a crazy weekend and I am just getting caught up.

worrierking:

For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield (Canada/US)
(new artist)

The guitars are fantastic in this one, both Stills and Young. Also, the "Paranoia Strikes Deep" line is an all-time classic. Worrierqueen and I use it frequently.

worrierking:

Cheese And Onions - The Rutles (Ricky Fataar from South Africa)
(new artist)

The Rutles, both the TV special and the album, are one of the best spoofs of anything ever. They made fun of the Beatles legend while creating music that both mocked and paid loving tribute to the Fab 4. Every tune has some recognizable part of an actual Beatles song while being musically interesting and lyrically funny. Cheese and Onions is a send-up of Imagine and A Day in the Life. The orchestral crescendo into the cut-off single staccato piano note to finish is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

worrierking:

Underwhelmed - Sloan (Canada)
(new artist)

Sloan, if you are not familiar, is a power-pop band with great lyrics and catchy tunes from Canada. This is my favorite of many. Highly recommended.

I've never watched the US version of the office, so all I know of Toby is that there's a fantasy baseball writer who calls pitchers he doesn't like Tobys. So I do get the drift.

This needs to be rectified. The first season suffers a bit from trying to be too much like the UK version, but it finds its more American groove, and settles in, and then seasons 2-6 are pretty great before it starts to wane.

White Horse - Laid Back (Denmark)
I'm gonna be a late listener today thanks to work BS, but wanted to take a sec to talk about White Horse.

A few days back when discussing Doug E. Fresh, I mentioned that growing up in my hometown, Friday nights at Skateland were de facto "white people" nights while Saturday nights were for the Black folks. The first time I went on a Saturday was when I was twelve for my basketball team's end-of-season party. My first reaction - the music was so much better! Fridays was lots of generic pop/r&b with a bit of rap thrown in. OTOH, Saturday nights were funky, not just with soul and hip-hop but also electro - the first time I heard Planet Rock was a freaking revelation.

I got my first job a couple of years later as a DJ at Skateland, mostly on Fridays and the dreaded Sunday afternoons (lots of little kids), but drew the occasional Saturday. The manager kept separate boxes of records to guide the setlists, and Saturday nights were a musical education: Kraftwerk to the The Gap Band to Midnight Star and, of course, Laid Back - - couldn't believe it years later when I found out they weren't Black but instead nerdy dudes from Denmark. Just love how a genre with it's roots in 1970s German electronic music became a primary driver of early hip-hop then Latin Freestyle (my personal favorite) then alternative dance/Electroclash and post-punk revival.

Not sure why but this has been the weakest round so far for me. Not that the songs are "bad" but nothing has really done much for me - even the more "established" songs.

Kansas City - The New Basement Tapes (UK/US)
(new artist)

First thought: This must be another version of that song that the Beatles covered, because why wouldn't Krista look for a Beatles angle?

Second thought: Sounds like Mumford and Sons.

Third thought: This is a supergroup that covered obscure Dylan songs and includes Marcus Mumford? That explains that.

Fourth thought: Johnny Depp played guitar on this track?

Dealing with them is a scary thought, but I'm gonna have to.

haven't watched the Sopranos, Mad Men, The Wire or Community either.
3 out of the 4 are amazing. I'm only a few episodes in on Season 2 of The Wire, though.
Community is well loved but I thought every character was completely annoying and I cringe watching Joel McHale in anything.

agreed - though I really enjoyed Senor Chang.

so Pip - I think this has come up before so sorry if we have been over this but is there a particular reason for not having checked these shows out?

Seems like a limited tour on his website - hope he expands the cities. I go where patron saint of yacht rock Steve Lukather goes.

I've never watched the US version of the office

reaction.

hi, M4 ...

i know you're new here, so i have a lil' request ... can you crop your reaction gifs a tad?

no big deal, and i hope you don't misconstrue as me treating you like some kinda doormat, but - just a nitpick.

THANX!

😁

yeah, sure - it's either pretty small or the full screen

when it's small you see a bunch of other gifs and it seems distracting ...

squirrel.

Yeah, I looked at this one for the US draft but couldn't take it due to Elvis Costello. Wait, where is Elvis Costello, you say? On this song, Johnny Depp sat in for him. But the official "The New Basement Tapes" supergroup that put out the record is five people, one of whom is Costello. So here we are.

Steve Lukather was fantastic when I saw him with the All-Starr Band last year. Everyone was.

Ringo's tour dates have been wacky. He had Seattle at a venue TBD on there for a while, then it disappeared entirely. Then today it's back but in Woodinville. I noticed a couple of others that were on and off, too.

I'm sure he'll expand but is probably playing it safe and leaving dates for re-scheduling in case they have to shut down again as they did twice on the last tour when Ringo got COVID.
