Offshoot of another thread. Scenario is that you're in a store or some such, or you're interacting publicly with guy, and he calls you one of the following names. Trying to figure out which one seems the most demeaning and/or disrespectful.

Bonus South Park clip illustrating the point:

So (though it may be my user error) I can't figure out how to also add "champ" and "sport." They belong in this poll but I can't figure out how to add.

I haven't been called many of these but I think the tone in which it is said is more the issue than the actual word itself.

I would probably go with Hoss or Pal as the worst of them (but I am likely projecting a tone onto them).

Good point. For the poll assume neutral tone. Like, you're at Best Buy looking at TVs and the salesman comes to talk to you and calls you one of these names during the conversation.

I lump those 2 in with pal & chief.
Picked pal.

Went Chief. Seems like a sarcastic, you think you're in charge but you're really not, sort of thing. Boss similar but Chief feels like a bigger slight imo. Not a big fan of Hoss or Pal either. The rest don't bother me

I can roll with "Dude" and "Man" ... the rest you can throw into a hat.

"Pal" makes me think I'm in a 1940s movie. Voted "Hoss", though, as that is a real try-hard faux-folksy expression.

Pal is for sure #1 followed by Guy. I don't care to be called any of the other ones. None of them bother me bro.

This is my sentiment. I'm totally finally with Dude and Man, but I take any of the names listed as equally annoying/demeaning.

ETA: I voted Buddy (or Bud) because usually people calling me that aren't my buddy, at least not yet.

Have a friend who says dude more than anyone in Big Lebowski but it's actually great. voted chief...

I am a Chief so I get called that 24/7 at work, I went with Bud since people that forget my name usually say "Hey Bud"....I'm guilty of that greeting as well :bag:

Obligatory

My favorite was this one older waitress who couldn't remember names. She would just shout out Hey You to everyone who walked in.

Hey buddy, this link is literally in the OP. Don't steal my thunder, guy.

I’m not your guy, friend. (Oops)

No "Ace" option? Flawed pole.
agreed - also need to add "Chachi"
Good call...Chachi is a favorite of mine to use.
And its one you could use on a young’n and achieve a perplexed look and confusion.

It’s really an all timer at this point.
Exactly. Then they google it, pull up a picture of a young Bob Loblaw, and they are even more confused. It messes with them mentally for months, if not years after.

This is how my dad uses "Guy". But those names he can't remember are of his kids, grand kids, and great grand kids. :lmao: My nephews and I joke about it all the time.

I once had a partner (job title of “partner”) that called me “hoss” all of the time. Voted that… maybe just weird because it is slang for a big, strong man, like a horse (or, at least, that’s what I associate with) and I’m a scrawny 155 pounds. So, felt more like using it ironically as I’m more jockey-like, but I don’t know.
