I think that "Pal" is the only one where I have a hard time seeing how it isn't ironically funny. It's just weird, even in ironic usage.

But "Boss," "Chief," "Dude," and others are fine by me, I guess.

I work with a guy that did 12 years in the USAF and is still in the reserves as an aircraft mechanic. Good dude, get along fine. He's about 10 years my junior and has maybe 2-3 years of non-military work experience.

He was calling me "chief" as a term of endearment (I think). I had to ask him to stop calling me "Chief" and "Boss" and just use my first name. He was cool about it and hasn't done it since.

Generally hate all those terms in nearly every context.

So (though it may be my user error) I can't figure out how to also add "champ" and "sport." They belong in this poll but I can't figure out how to add.
I was coming to vote for sport. A guy walked up as a friend and I were walking by and he called out to my friend "What's up, sport". For whatever reason I just wanted to punch that dude in the face. Turns out he was a trust fund baby and ended up washing out.

I'm extremely guilty of calling everyone Bud with an occasional Pal thrown in. I don't think Man should have been in the poll.

Do you call your colleague from USAF, "dude"?

Offshoot of another thread. Scenario is that you're in a store or some such, or you're interacting publicly with guy, and he calls you one of the following names. Trying to figure out which one seems the most demeaning and/or disrespectful.

Bonus South Park clip illustrating the point:
Was this thought of while watching the Dan Patrick show?

No, not that I know of. Is that pejorative for airmen?

Just asking since you described him as a "good dude".

No. Was from the other thread about a salesperson calling somebody “boss.”

kind of sort of totally off topic, and off mood, but it's what i thought of when i read the thread title.

when my dad was in his mid to late 70's, he was complaining to me about my mother's drinking and the names she would call him while drunk.

he said he didn't care what she called him, except he would not put up with being called a "son of a *****" or a "*******" because that was disrespectful to his mother, so when she did that he would throw a glass of water in her face.

if you guys are really really offended by being called boss or pal or friend or such, i'm amused to picture you coming back at them Jerry Stiller/Frank Costanza style with"you son of a *****"!
