It looks very much now like there won’t be any bipartisan deal on the COVID relief package . In fact the most likely outcome is that Biden’s plan will pass without a single Republican vote in House or Senate, exactly the way Obamacare did, exactly the way the Trump tax cuts did (that time without a single Democrat vote), continuing the pattern of a completely divided Congress (and nation.)
The main question is who will win the messaging war. Here is what we will hear:
From the Democrats: We tried as hard as we could to reach a deal with the Republicans. They wouldn’t bend. They really didn’t want to work with us. So we did what we had to do do for the American people.
From the Republicans: Biden promised to work with us. He didn’t mean it. The Democrats have no interest in unity: first the impeachment, now this. There’s so many things in this deal that has nothing to do with COVID.
