Why don't the Jets start Tebow at RB (1 Viewer)

Forget Wildcat and trick plays at QB. Just line Tebow up at halfback. The only reason Tebow has been successful in this league, other than a few suckerpunch bombs at the end of games, is because of his running ability. He'll never beat out Sanchez at QB and that says A LOT about his potential at his current position. They've got a big stinking mess back there at RB. Why not have Tebow taking handoffs and see what he can do running through trash.

If they're willing to put him on return duty I would think this would be an easy call.

Right but the Wildcat is a gadget formation you run a few times per game. I'm talking about Tim Tebow, starting RB for the Jets. HE lins up behind Sanchez in all formations except empty backfield. He can't catch the ball much worse than Green.

ESPN board down?

Usually when they get someone to switch positions, it's because they are better fit for it. Tim Tebow is NOT a RB. He is slower than an RB. if he was to be used at another position it would be Water Boy.

In a past life I think Tebow would have made a great 80's era FB who could carry the ball for 70-80 times over the course of a season and sprinkle in 10-15 catches on the side.

One of the reasons that Tebow succeeds as a runner is because he has open real estate as a result of receivers taking defenders downfield, thus opening up the field underneath. Add in the pass rushers coming towards him and that leaves the middle of the field exposed often with only 1 player to beat (if the D has a LB spying him).

He has great size but he's only moderately fast for a scrambling QB as it is and too slow to be an effective RB. He'd never make it to the edge on tosses, pitches, or sweeps. As it is he'd struggle trying to run through tight creases and overpower a 7-8 man box for more than 2-3 yards every run unless he was getting 90's Cowboys era holes to run through.

Oh well. Guess that's it for Timmay in the NFL. If you can't beat out Sanchez at QB or Shonne Green at RB you are screw-hooed.

As was mentioned, Tebow is not a RB, and would never succeed trying to be one. He is exactly what he is. A lousy QB making a few good plays a game.

I bet they try it out of desperation by week 10. Jets could honestly be the worst team in the NFL this year.

This is not a game of Madden. Tebow is a human being with free will who would have to agree to the position change. Tebow's people have been resisting such a change since before he was at Florida. He's always wanted to be a qb despite all logic and reason to the contrary. He's not going to change now.

He's already agreed to work on special teams, so I think his position on that has softened somewhat.

FB would be a little more natural for him, and his speed would be fine for a FB.

WTF? Teblow wasn't meant to be an NFL QB. Some might call him delusional but since god is on his side, Christians call him inspirational. Normal people can see clearly that he is out of his mind...

I have long tired of the Tebow haters.

Is it so hard to understand? He changes how defenses are forced to play. He requires a safety to play in the box (opening up the big play). Clearly, he can play QB in this league. People who want him to become Peyton are always going to be disappointed.

Why would you say logic and reason were against his being a QB before he even went to Florida? His run as a college QB is among the greatest ever seen at that level.

lots of people (including Tebow) are inspirational. That doesnt mean that they can be an NFL QB (at a competent level).

Lol, haters? Just because we recognize his complete inability to be a professional QB makes us haters? I'm a Pats fan who naturally hates the Jets, but I actually like Tebow as a person.

Arm-chair coach ability to recognize NFL talent-level players is limited to their own narrow-minded definition of what a QB should look like. Tebow is more talented in some aspects of a QB than other NFL QBs and less talented in other parts of his game. Having just turned 25, he can improve on his weaknesses and become an even better overall QB. To make a negative and definitive answer on a young player that was clearly a different type of QB that has already shown great success in his 14 starts is foolish. People who get paid to make NFL personnel decisions recognize his potential, and whether he attains that potential or doesn't, isn't something that can be judged right now. Even if it was, no one on this board is near qualified to make that assumption, or else they'd be an NFL scout. That's what he means by haters.

Well people who get paid to make NFL decisions and non Jets fans.

That doesn't even make sense.

So you'll also say no one on this board is near qualified to praise his ability, right? Or is that different?

Could be Tebow has skills that make him a fantastic college player against college competition but he doesn't have essential skills at a high enough level that an NFL QB needs. Happens with other positions all the time that a player is outstanding in college but isn't as dominate in the NFL.

Don't think much of Tebow for his talent but I like the guy for his principals. Dude is a breath of fresh air and couragous. Bet he makes for a super teammate.

After his NFL career ends there will be debates should he go to College Gameday or into the Monday Night Football booth.

Twebow is not fast, but he is very quick and explosive. From the 2010 combine, his verical was better than all RB's except for 3, his shuttle number was better than all RB's except 2, and his 3 cone drill was better than any RB. Tebow, @ 245, would also fall under the category of "power back".

He runs with good elusiveness and power, however he would need to work on things like ball security, pad level, reading blocks, taking handoffs, route running, and blocking. All of these things might be easier to learn than proper form throwing the ball, because he wouldn't have to unlearn bad form first.

I could see Tebow as a really dangerous RB/WR/TE/FB/QB weapon one day, but he's got to work on all of the above first and that won't happen as long as he has aspirations of being a QB. it may take Tebow testing the FA market first and realizing that there are 32 teams out there that do not see him as a QB an don't want to pay him as such.

This is the preseason before his third NFL season. He didn't play in a NFL Pro offense in college, so he started out behind in terms of development. He didn't get an offseason in his second year because of the Strike. This is the third OC and fourth HC of his three year career. My point is that it is way too early to say he can't play QB in this league. In the past, before 2000, most rookie QBs didn't play at all. In fact, it used to be common for a QB to watch and learn for three to five years before starting. So, Tebow has alot to learn but he has talent and the drive to work hard. What he needs to work on is consistency and the subtle things like looking off receivers and the speed of his decision making. Those skills will increase as he gets more time in the NFL. He does bring other intangibles that critics tend to omit: elusiveness and the ability to string a play out; ability to run if there is nothing there; on field leadership. Those are valuable skills too.

Look at where he is compared to where Blaine Gabbert is. Gabbert is way ahead of him as a passer. Hell, any QB on his third year in the league. It's hard to find a QB with a job in the NFL who is a worse passer than Tebow. The reason he is still in the league is that he's an amazing athlete, and intense competitor, and a winner. Not because he has potential to develop into an NFL QB.

FWIW his 40 time is less than one second slower than Shonne Green.

You mean less than a tenth of a second slower...and no one ever called Shonn Greene fast at 4.65. At 4.72 (before bulking up recently which I'm willing to bet would hamper him in the 40) Tebow would be "slower" than any RB clocked at the combine the last 3 years.
